I enrolled on to a Korean course just a couple of weeks ago and already I'm reaping the rewards. Not only are my lessons completely free but last Sunday I got to go on the first of many 'all expenses paid' day trips organised by the academy. It turned out to be quite a treat. There were about 90 people on the trip but only about 7 or 8 foreigners, few of whom I would regard as normal or worth speaking to. If you had seen one chap you could have been forgiven for believing that Freddie Mercury never died and that he simply moved to Korea and started wearing roll neck t-shirts. As a new foreigner in the Talk House group who hadn’t been seen on previous trips, I was quite the flavour of the ... read more

As time continues to fly by I thought it was about time for another update. No trip to a sunny island to tell you about this time, but life has been very busy in other ways over the last few weeks and there’s always lots going on. Now that I’ve been here for six weeks I am feeling more familiar with the place and the people around me. Thankfully, I seem to have made a favourable impression with the Korean teachers at both of my schools and I have been taken out for countless lunches and dinners by my very nice colleagues. Two teachers from one school have asked me to help them with their English. They offered to pay me but I didn’t want to take money so, in return for meeting them every Wednesday ... read more

Weekend Two predictions This weekend looks like it will be spent in Seoul mostly. I’m going through to this SA braai on Saturday and maybe out for a couple of drinks and then I’m meeting up with Lauren, one of the Wanderers hockey girls who lives in Seoul. We are off to a huge cultural market on Sunday. It would appear it will be better than dong-daemun and I’m hoping that is true cause I have so few clothes over here I’m in desperate need of a couple more items. I’m hoping I’ll meet some new faces this weekend as well and find a couple of peeps to hangout with on a regular basis. This week is supposed to be my YAY KOREA week. I'm invoking the SECRET and using the power of positive thinking. I'm going to WILL Korea into something better than it actually is. BUT I have to tell you, I think it's actually working a little bit. It officially started on Sunday when I was on the train coming back from Pusan. A little Korean girl was sitting in front of me very interested in the foreigners (us) behind her. We said hi. She said hi. Then, we started playing a card game. She then turned around and proceeded to ask us what game we were playing. This turned into a very chatty conversation and it turns out this little girl can speak more English than any of my co-teachers. As a matter of fact, this ... read more

The working world - Week two I started my 1st week of teaching. In Korea you add one year onto your age so I have discovered that I am teaching 5, 6 and 7 year olds and not 6, 7 and 8 year olds (doesn’t sound like a big diff but it is). The kids here are very sweet but they don’t stop screaming and they are mini robots. Its pretty chilled cause I have 1 book that I have to teach them in a month so pretty easy game and the robot nature in them helps them memorize things fast but since they have been taught English in Korean for so long it’s a challenge to get them to understand what they are reading and not only memorize. I can already see progress though cause ... read more

1 day down 364 days ahead  On my second day I decided I’d go and open my bank account. With much sign language, an attempted name change (The bank clerk was desperately trying to give me a Korean name, cause he had no idea how to write Julie-Anne Marchington in Korean characters) and I had a bank account an hour and a half later, I still am not quite sure what my name is in my bank book! Its brilliant here in Korea you get a bank book just like when we had building society accounts (Gran you would love it)! Every time you transact you pop your book in the machine and it prints your balance and transaction history in it for you. Pity its all in Korean so best I get learning! The ... read more

D-Day Some people are notoriously early, some are anally punctual and me…well a safe description would be fashionably late….always! 1:30pm, casually making may way through the x-ray rigmarole when the X-ray operator asks if he can search my bag. I politely oblige and next thing you know I’m being accused of owning a firearm, go figure. After the third X-ray and round of interrogation he decides the only way to get me to admit to transiting munitions is to show me the screen cause he couldn’t identify the ominous munitions he was convinced he was seeing. Clearly Mr X-ray operator has never been lucky enough to own as nice a set of watercolour paint tubes (packaged in a very neat box) like I now own courtesy of my girls! Relieved that I wasn’t going to be ... read more

All the beautiful sounds of the world in a single word: Korea, Korea, Korea, Korea! Pictures: It’s official. I am in love. It’s only been two and a half weeks, and I don’t want to rush into anything... but I am smitten. I can just feel it in my heart. I am in love with South Korea. The people are amazing. The food is incredible. The streets are lit up and the excitement of it all is refreshing. I have adapted very well to life here. I think the month I spent in China last summer took the brunt of my Asian culture shock. South Korea is kind of like a little America, but all the people are Asian, and I am illiterate. Last weekend I went to an SK Wyverns professional baseball game (SK is ... read more

Last weekend was pretty amazing. It was definitely the highlight of my time in Korea so far and for that reason I hope you will forgive me for delaying this blog entry until I could get hold of some photos and give you a better idea of where I’ve been. As you may recall from my last post, we have just had the Chuseok holiday here in Korea. Whilst Koreans celebrated it in traditional style, it appears to be customary for every Westerner within reach of the Incheon ferry port to descend on Deokjeokdo, an island about an hour off of the west coast. Catching the earliest ferry on Saturday was something of an ordeal. This was partly because we had misjudged the amount of time it would take to get tickets and partly because they ... read more
