The River Safari We went to the Singapore river safari the next day, to see the four largest river animals live and learn all about the rivers. The first was the Mississippi River right near our home in Canada. We sortof skipped over it, but we did look at some of the fish and turtles that were new to me, like snapping turtles. I have seen them on TV, but not live so it was different. There were also Gars, a fish that is a lot like an alligator and a major predator in the Mississippi River. There were smaller fish too, and a beaver. I've seen many in the wild. We had a reservation at 1:00 pm for the mini Amazon river cruise. The boat went way too fast and we couldn't get any really ... read more

Up for an early morning swim. We checked our bags in with the concierge then grabbed a couple of taxis out the front of the hotel to take us over the other side of the island (SGD27-30) to the zoo. Breakfast was a buffet. A quick diversion to feed some elephants who literally purred with appreciation. As breakfast continued a few of the zoos orangutans chose to visit - they have a fairly large area in which to roam and this cafe is part of that so as fruit and seeds are provided they come across and deign to sit around whilst the silly humans gawk at and photograph them. The zoo as a whole has fairly large and well maintained enclosures and we spent a few hours there. As luck would have it the flashest ... read more

Today started early with our trip to Singapore Zoo. We were to meet in the lobby at 8:00am to be driven the 35 minutes out to Singapore Zoo. We got there and was greeted with a fantastic buffet breakfast. Then the Orangutans came out and we were able to go and have our photos with them. While in line they also had a big snake that you could have placed on you shoulders to get a photo. After breakfast we made our way around the park, starting with the Polar Bear. In the water he looked happy but when he got out he looked sad and highly annoyed at everything. His fur was missing in places and what was there looked really manky. This part of the zoo was depressing; it's too hot in Singapore for ... read more

After another good sleep in Farahs bed we enjoyed a cream roll from the 7-11 and caught the beautifully clean 173 bus to Singapore Zoo. Singapore Zoo held two major points of interest for me. Firstly, my friend Serene who ran Lady Tubbs back in Bristol used to work in the Zoo and had told me of the fantastic conservation work they do. Secondly, my mother found out while walking round Singapore Zoo and being rather unwell, that she was going to be bringing me into the world. Singapore Zoo more than lived up to what Serene had told me. Farah's cousin later pointed out that it's genius comes from the animals not being in cages and I think he is right. The zoo was the best I've ever been to. The large enclosures and the ... read more

I was off to the famous Singapore zoo today but I totally messed up with my travel arrangements to get there, I made a cursory glance at my itinerary and remember it said to get to Woodlands MRT station from where you get a bus. However when I got there after 50 mins to the tube I couldn’t find any bus to be seen, after walking round looking like a complete numpty for 10 mins a lovely old lady took pity on me and asked if she could help. After a little laugh when I told her my destination she explained that you only got off at Woodlands on Sundays the rest of the week it was Ang Mo Kio station – Doh! So I then had to buy another ticket to take me there and ... read more

We arranged a breakfast at the zoo with the orang-tangs. Lovely zois about 45 mins from the hotel. It is on a small island so a lot of the animals are in open enclosures. Breakfast was interesting I now know there is a different between pork bacon and beef bacon - taste and toughanise had breakfast with a couple from WA they were going on a boat back to WA 2 weeks cruise. Had a lovely morning at the zoo wandering around. Lucky for us we just got on a bus back to the city when we had a heavy rain downpour. It seemed every time we got back to the hotel we had a wander around the shops. 5 levels needs tWanders wander and absorb. We found we didn't eat lunch apart from a snack ... read more

My first actual day in Singapore was very hot and humid. I got up at 8:30 and went down to breakfast, breakfast was delightful. After breakfast I decided to go to the Singapore zoo. The drive to the zoo was pleasant and I realised how green Singapore really was but as soon as I got out of the car is was hot and humid. When I got to the zoo, I went to see the white tigers first they were beautiful, and they were white with black stripes. There were about 5 tigers in the exhibit, after I saw the tigers I walked around for a bit and saw more animals; elephants, monkeys, goats, the giant rabbit and many more. As I was walking around I looked at my feet and there was a lizard running ... read more

We arrived at the zoo by taxi from Holland village (where we had lunch and looked at one condo.) After we bought tickets we went on "Treetop Walk" and at the entrance we saw lemur on a tree just 5 feet above my head and then on the walk (which by the way was elevated) there was a lemur on the railing! Then the other lemur came and played with that lemur. We also saw an Nile crocodile (which my dad said was the biggest crocidile he ever saw), a greater mouse deer (which looked like a deer cross kangroo and the fact that it as small),and some monkeys. Then we saw the white tigers which were roaming around and when they called out they were going to feed them in 15 minutes they went into ... read more

I've woken up this morning to the continuing drama that is Qantas deciding to ground all their aeroplanes. Ordinarily, this wouldn't be of the slightest concern to me, however a quick check of my flight itinerary shows that it's only 48 hrs until I am due on one of the said Qantas fleet to head to Perth. OK deep breath - they'll sort these arguments out with the unions quickly eh? By Tuesday it will all be sorted? I decided to watch the news. Thousands of stranded passengers around the world saying they're stuck - other carriers are full and they are having to wait for 3/4 days to get an alternative flight. Surely not - Singapore to Perth is a major route - so I check out skyscanner. Worst fears confirmed - only one flight ... read more
