Is the train from Singapore to Bangkok worth the 48 hours that it takes?

Hey all -
I have about one month to spend in SE Asia from March 16 - April 16. I'll be in India for a couple weeks prior and will fly into either Singapore or Bangkok. I want to see Thailand and Vietnam for sure.

If I fly into Singapore I'm considering taking the train to Bangkok. From there I'll probably fly one-way into Ho Chi Min or Hanoi, I'm not sure yet (the overland routes through Cambodia sound a little too dangerous for an American (?)).

I know the train to Bangkok takes a couple days. Has anyone done this and is it worth the time? If I stop for a couple days along the way this could add 4-5 days onto to an already tight trip and I'm just not sure if it would be worth it. Any advice is much appreesh.

thanks - Reply to this

Hello John 😊

48 hours is kinda long unless you are tired or something and fancy sitting still for a couple of days, reading and sleeping. Is there a reason why you are not flying? Is there a big difference between the cost of train and plane or what?

Thanks Mell - I don't really need to be in Singapore at all. I just need a base to fly roundtrip from Delhi. I figured that since I'm there maybe the train would be a cool way to get to Bangkok. Its actually cheaper to fly RT into Bangkok so that's probably what I'll do. Thanks again.. Reply to this

The overland route through Cambodia is not dangerous in the slightest. As with other countries in the region, Cambodians are absolutely fantastic. They are always friendly and polite.

Consider getting a bus from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur. From there you can fly cheaply with Air Asia to pretty much anywhere in the region. Air Asia do also fly out of Singapore but I think the choice of destination is more restricted. Reply to this

Hi John,

The Eastern & Oriental Express is fantastic (quite pricey though). Otherwise, you shouldn't just overlook Singapore - It's a great place to spend a few days... (Here's a link to a very good online-guide to singapore: www.metropolasia.com ) Reply to this

What are the views like from the train windows? Good views are sometimes worth taking a very long train ride for. Reply to this

Hi, anybody know how much approximately the train cost from SE to BKK? I am planning a traveling with train from SE passing KUL and then to BKK,however probably will spent 2-3 days in KUL (any cheapest accommodation and how much? - and what is the best place to visit in KUL which is worth my 3 days stay), and then continue to BKK. What train is best? Thanks in advance for your response guys !cheers Reply to this
