The first full day in Singapore so it's off to Sentosa island, the island just off the south of Singapore that has lots of entertainment and beaches. Sentosa is the most southerly point on mainland asia apparently. I use the subway which uses a smartcard, it's 2 dollars with 1 back if you return the card, and then over to Sentosa on the monorail. Once on the island there are couple of artificial beaches but when you look out to sea there are oil tankers waiting to go into port - it puts you off going into the water for a swim. I visited Fort Siloso, the British Fort and learned that it's a myth that the guns weren't used in the fall of Singapore to the Japanese in 1942, they were facing out to sea ... read more

So This Is What Paradise Is!! We were up nice and early today, mainly because Amy was bouncing off the walls, as we made our day trip to Sentosa Island. The island is only about 1km off the coast of Singapore and is considered the southern most point of continental South East Asia (even though it's an island off an island off the continent). About 20 years ago the military gave the island over to tourism to create a resort/theme park/wilderness precinct and when the government does something here, they do it in style!! Through the neon arch, we pay the $2 admission to the island which then provides all bus and tram transport free making the world your oyster so to speak. First on the agenda... a lesson in history. Fort Silosa, built back in ... read more

Hi readers Well where were we? Oh yes on Koh Lipe and moving back to a superior bungalow - well, we were lucky they had one but we had to spend three nights in the standard - not so good. As we said cold shower but air con - unfortunately the bloody air con packed up so not a good night's sleep on the last night. So glad to be back to superior even though Bob thinks he has let down the backpacking fraternity by us being wimps. Spent most of the time on the beach during the day and during evening eating and drinking (can't wait to get home to lose weight!!) but we have had the most brilliant time. Booked our snorkelling trip but the day was a bit overcast and windy and not ... read more

Well, we had been told then when it rains in Singapore, it really rains. Sentosa is a small island just off the south coast of Singapore which is a pleasure resort with various attractions and 3 beaches. We went expecting a day of relaxation after a couple of days pounding the streets but unfortunately, only an hour or so after arriving the heavens opened and we were drenched. Although it meant we didn't want to stay is was actually quite fun getting that wet that quickly. Soaking, we headed back to the mainland and back to the hostel to dry out which is where we sit now. If the rain dies off we might walk down to Little India for dinner (the right way this time!) but if not we think we might head to the ... read more

We spent Wednesday and Thursday on an Island that has been developed strictly as a recreational island called Sentosa. There are golf courses, beaches, Underwater world, Luge ride, historical sites, etc. Very planned as everything is in Singapore. We took the cable car to Sentosa Island from Singapore. It is very close, it just has the river betwen it. It was fun to ride over the tops of the canopy trees with their big leaves. They are building a casino on the island as well, which is bound to be over the top. We started off with a cheesy ride, and made our way out to Fort Siloso. Are you ready for more Singapore history? Sentosa Island was used as a military base by the British for many years. It was originally called Pulau Blakang Mati, ... read more

Singapore was interesting - not someplace I chose to go necessarily as it was more of a requirement for the stopover to Oz, but glad I stopped for a few days as it's a different place - such a mixture of different cultures, religions and cultures to create somewhere really unique. I loved staying in little India as it was a cool part of the city. The food is amazing - sampled as much as I could of course, but my appetite is smaller than when at home due to the heat and humidity. Was very odd staying in a hostel for the first time - I'm sure I will get used to it over the coming months, but am loving the BA lounge at Singapore airport for my own personal shower and complimentary glass of ... read more

Since we have been doing pretty fun and "not so serious" things lately this time we decided to do something else. Or actually, someone else decided that already at school, hence we had a field trip to Fort Siloso, which is a coastal artillery battery and one of the twelve coastal batteries which made up ‘Fortress Singapore’ at the start of World War Two. That was pretty much all I knew about the place beforehand. Fort Siloso was almost too easy to access because it was located on western tip of the island of Sentosa (formerly called Blakang Mati — the ‘Island behind the Dead’) which is the island where our school is.Fort Siloso was like in our neighborhood and I didn't almost have any idea that it is really so close The Fort is one ... read more
