On my last day in Singapore, I decided to venture out of the wonderful city centre and head for the beautiful Island Resort of Sentosa - it had been highly reccommended by the guy sitting next to me on the plane over here, so I thought it was at least worth a look = he was SO RIGHT!!! I checked out of the Hostel from Heaven at around midday, and then took the extremely long journey to Harbour Front MRT Station - I think it'd would've been a lot easier and quicker if I hadn't had my hideously heavy backpack with me, and all my belongings!!! Once at the Station, I made my way to the Cruise Centre were I could leave my backpack for the day - thank god!!! Then it was on to the ... read more

Staying in a posh hotel - for once. Singapore a welcome respite - air conditioned bliss - from the African heat. Afternoon trip on the cable car over to Sentosa Island where we got soaked waiting for a magical sound and light show... the show was mainly laser cartoon charactors shone onto fountains and an irritating tw@t presenting... Singapore shopping and eating very good. Dinner next day at Boat Quay. ... read more

hey there, so this is it, we're in paradise. after 13h on the plane and 2h stuck at the airport because someone had a heart attack, we finally made it and it feels great. Singapore is so nice, people are lovely, very king and helpful and there's white sand and palms trees on the beach, so what more can we ask? there's so many differents cultures living here, we've seen different kind of temples, things i had never seen before. food is not that bad, we've managed not to go to mc donald's yet, but i'm hungry all the time. we've been staying in a great hostel, there's wood everywhere and it feels cosy, when i think that we don't need to go to work the morning, i'm not regretting anything. the weather is a bit ... read more

Continuing the post-Rita catching up with my blog. This entry is beginning Wednesday, 21 September. After a quick ride into the city, I’m dropped off at the Conrad Centennial Singapore. Conrad is Hilton’s “high end” brand. This is my first stay in one. Stylish and elegant. Like everything I’ve seen so far, spotlessly clean. I ask one of the porters if the hotel is new - he says no, “It’s nine years old.” I’m shocked - it does not look any older than a year at best. Try to check in. Wham - my first introduction to Asian service and hospitality standards. By all rights the Conrad didn’t need to let me check in until 14.00 or 15.00; instead three people are taking me up to the Concierge Lounge, getting me coffee, and very efficiently finding ... read more

I went on the cable car today, to just sit back and get a good view. God, I need to get off my feet already! It was really lovely, just before sunset, over the water. It's still really hot, so there was a bit of a breeze that made it nice. The cars actually go really fast - I was surprised. I took a few nice water, cruise ship, Sentosa island and Singapore skyline photos. I went from Mount Faber, past Harbourfront to Sentosa. On the way back, I just went to Harbourfront, as it's easier to get home from there. Speaking of that, the MRT (subway) here is excellent by the way. I haven't braved the buses yet, but there's not really any need to. Ive had a good time with the transport so far ... read more

Little India/ Kampung Glam/ The Arab Quarter (North East of the City) Today I've done a walking tour of my area, the names listed in the heading. FASCINATING!! Words and even photos won't describe the little streets, the stalls, the people..... ......the fact that you suddenly find amazing buildings all the time, just by accident, cause you happen to look up a little lane while you are crossing the road, or you see something shining behind something else! It's a fabulous place I could definately live in, with a mixture of temples, mosques and a lot more. My day included, just to give you some idea: little and big markets, such as * Zhujiao Hawker Centre, * Tekka Centre, * Little India Arcade, * Albert St Mall, * Bugis Village stalls * and Thieves Market. Hey Everyone Adding perhaps a last entry as we enter our final stage of travel to San Fran for the weekend. Stayed at the Sijori Sentosa Resort. Sounds a lot nicer than it really was, with stinky towels and poor air conditioning, but the island was fun for the 8 hours we were there. Didn't see the Butterfly farm but went to "Underwater World" which was actuallly a very nice aquarium. Did a "jungle hike" for 1.5km which was pretty cheesy with fake dragon bones but also very neat. Saw a great kids' show called the musical fountains with those fountains like at the Bellagio in Vegas. Rode the free monorail (the only thing we paid for was the aquarium). Had some tex mex at a Riveboat restaurant (an actual riverboat) with a Singapore lady (with ... read more

All thanks here go to our "Sentosa Angels", Kathy and Dinah. Without them we would have been thoroughly up the creek without a paddle! We arrived at about 20:30 hoping to get on the campsite at Sentosa, on the shuttle bus we met Kathy and Dinah, two amazing ladies on holiday at their company's chalet. Without knowing anything about us they promptly invited us to stay with them on the floor of the chalet. Luckily we accepted because we found out the next day that the campsite was closed for renovation! Anyway, we had a lovely time on Sentosa for a few days, the Sentosa evening fountain show was pretty spectacular, as was the company we kept, Thanks again Kathy!... read more

Despite a reasonably good nights sleep, we decided we'd spend our first day in Singapore taking it easy. As recommended, we went out to Sentosa island to find the beach. This turned out to be a theme-park of sorts, but lacking in roller coasters. The main highlight was the aquarium and seeing a Pink dolphin show. Since it was pretty hot, we figured we would brave a swim on the beach, which was pleasant enough until we started getting stung by apparently invisible fish and decided just to sunbathe instead. After a few hours, it seemed the jet lag was catching up on us, so we headed back to the hostel for a (pleasantly air-conditioned) sleep. The next day, we figured we'd had enough of each other so the boys went one way, and Ross ... read more
