Couldn't resist popping into the world renowned Zoo yesterday, but unfortunately the photos didn't turn out as well as I'd hoped, but nevertheless it was a good day out. Took the cable car over to the Plastic Fantastic island of Sentosa, Singapore's little tourist heaven with artificial beaches overlooking oil tankers....lovely, but more importantly one last chance for tan top up! One last day on the beach.... I can't believe today has finally come. Today I go home. Mostly I'm ecstatic! Can't wait to set foot on British soil again, although I know it's probably be a rather large anticlimax. I'm longing for the cool weather, a pint of northern tap water from the Lakes and some non-Halal chocolate, never mind a large portion of greasy fish and chips....mmmmmmm. I just hope there are no problems ... read more

I returned to the Botanical Gardens this morning to see what I could see. It was all common stuff of course: plantain squirrels, cute little white-breasted waterhens, koels, flowerpeckers, etc. I fed the whistling ducks with the nutritious fare of white bread crusts. A snakehead came up as well to try out the offerings. The lakes in the Gardens are full of fish -- gouramis, cichlids, catfish, all sorts, as well as millions of red-eared turtles. I saw an Asian softshell turtle (Amyda cartilaginea) too, who was really nice but a trifle perplexed to see me. After I was done, I headed off to Sentosa Island, off the south coast. There's a lookout there labelled as the southernmost point of the Asian continent, which kind of begs the question of shouldn't the southernmost point of ... read more

Monday was my last full day in Singapore, and I spent it at Sentosa Island with Sarah and her parents, Cindy and Robert. Sentosa Island was formerly a British military installation. During World War II Singapore was captured by the Japanese. Apparently, the personnel charged to guard Singapore from attack were focused on threats from the sea. When the Japanese occupied Singapore, they did so by land via Malaysia. Thus, apparently the stronghold at Sentosa did Singapore little good in this instance. THE Stevenson family and I visited Underwater World which had a touch pool. The pool was about three feet deep, and many fish species were swimming in it. Cindy helped me to touch the back and head of a baby shark! The shark's skin felt something akin to a combination of canvas and leather. ... read more

Hi all, A different continent, same old blog!!! Welcome to Asia. Singapore is the place to come to with an empty suitcase!! Me. I'm not really a shopper, (unless I really need it!) but this place is sooooo cheap, especially at the moment as it's "The Big Singapore Sale" and the prices are really silly!! (Perhaps they are all the time but we won't be here long enough to find out!!) It's hot & humid and we leak like buckets, but everywhere is green, so clean and the people are fantastic, so friendly and helpful, even if we can't always understand them or they us, but that hasn’t happed very often! We’ve walked down Orchard Road, so many massive shopping malls, so much choice and bargaining is the order of the day, even if we didn't ... read more

I went back to Sentosa Island again; this time in the evening. Watched the sunset on the beach (I haven't added a photo of the sunset because it wasn't a very good one - it was quite cloudy) with a few people from my hostel. Then we watched a musical fountain/hologram show, which was interesting/slightly strange (involved a green monkey splashing around in the fountain). ... read more

Sentosa Island is linked to the mainland by a causeway. From the beach a suspended rope bridge connects Sentosa with a tiny islet that is the Southernmost part of continental Asia. I had a lovely day drinking Singapore Slings on the beach, swimming in the sea and viewing the Orchid Gardens. ... read more

With a 4 holiday lined up for the Chinese New year, i packed up my backpack, for a fun trip to Sentosa - the fun island, to the south of Singapore. The word Sentosa in malay language means, peace and tranquility. To the contrary, its an island of gr8 fun, merry and enjoyment. I was traveling with two of my friends, studying in my same programme (MS) in Singapore. Sentosa is a small island roughly 500 hectares in area, one quarter of the area bathed in a green canopy of tropical rainforests. It has 3.2 miles of coastline, studded with beaches. Easily accessible through bus (~15 min ride) or cable car (~15 min) from Harbourfront. We chose to take the cable car ride owing to the adventure involved. The journey started in Harbourfront tower 2 from ... read more

Well we had to tear ourselves from our beds this morning......... we both looked like we had been hit in the face, our eyes were so swollen from tiredness!! But again the food was calling- breakfast is included in our price- which makes this place EVEN better than we thought!! Took full advantage like always! Updated blogs, we were very impressed with ourselves and hope you enjoyed reading them................................ Decided to go to Sentosa Island for the afternoon- heard it was a must do..............but how do we get there?!? We'd been told about the MRT (underground to you English folk!) so thought we'd give our feet a rest- underground it was and WOW how clean and efficient! Tickets issued were like credit cards (we wished!!) which when returned you get your deposit back. WE found our ... read more

Today we went out to the SDA church in the Jurong District, thankfully it was easy to get there. Man are those guys ever friendly. They helped us out the whole time, invited us to stay and eat after (which we did) and tried to get us to go to their social night, but we had some sights to check out. They all seemed to know where Walla Walla was, that and Loma Linda. The food was awesome and tons of variety in taste as well as culture. After church we checked out Mt. Fabor, which is apparently one of only two places that are rainforests within city limits in the world (its what we've heard). We took a cable car to get up there and right when we got to the top the rainforest lived ... read more

Got the dodgy cable car up the hill style mountain to get good views ower the city and harbour. Apparently seven people died on this contraption in 1983 when a boat mast took out the cables. Anyway the death defying trip was worth it, will upload pics one day. Then over to the island to try the Carlsberg Skytower advertising "probably the best views of Singapore". They were good, although we had to wait for the thunder storm and mist to clear before we went on. We returned to the brewhouse to try some more of their beers, although later in the day prices go up to central london style prices and beyond! Had some dinner and found a cool little outside bar to have a nightcap. ... read more
