Sunday 29th April 2018 It is Sunday afternoon and we are relaxing after the best meal of our travels so far. Our splendid Sunday lunch, eaten at one of the top seafood restaurants along the east coast of Labuan (according to the locals who flock here from the town) was awesome. It cost £15 for both of us! It would have been really tops if it hadn’t been a “dry” restaurant as 99% of them are. We drank tall iced smoothies, pineapple for me and orange for John and started with a big bowl of very spicy soup full of chicken, tomatoes, lemon grass, ginger, chillies and more. It tasted very similar to Thai Tom Yam but with more tomato and it was hot! This was followed by a large dish of crispy fried prawns, gorgeous ... read more

Friday 27th April 2018 I am writing this blog aboard a ferry from Kota Kinabalu to Pulau Labuan. It is an old ferry, somewhat cramped here on the upper “Business Class” deck. The gods may or may not know what it is like down below! It is a three and a half hour journey west across the South China Sea and the notice on the exit door warns us that we are strictly forbidden to open any doors to go outside until we dock. This has nothing to do with adverse weather, the sun is shining and the blue sea is smooth. Our cameras and binoculars are put away (the windows are grubby) so we have missed the pretty islands passed by. Malaysians are not comfortable on the sea, we have seen few who enjoy swimming. ... read more

Monday 23rd April 2018 On Monday morning we said a sad “Farewell· to the Nature Lodge and crossed the Sungai Kinabatangan to pick up a minibus to take us to Sepilok. It was a bumpy journey! Our driver said locals call the trip a free body massage! However, the diggers are moving in to make the road a new duel carriageway to accommodate the palm oil trade. We are so glad it isn’t harvest time, when lorries would be back and forth taking the palm fruits off to be processed. More rainforest destruction! We arrived at Sepilok B & B at 11 a.m. after a two and a half hour journey and we were able to check in straight away. We have a nice little bungalow just a half hour walk from the Orang-utan Conservation Centre. ... read more

Saturday 21st April 2018 This morning we had to be up really early at 5.30 a.m. to pack our rucksacks and fly to Sandakan. We left the rucksacks at the hostel in Kota Kinabalu and just took our small backpacks with gear for three nights. The GRAB taxi picked us up at 6.30 a.m. and we got to the airport just after 7.00 a.m. in good time for departure at 8.30. By 9.30 we were landing in Sandakan and were met by our bus driver for the journey to the Sungai Kinabatangan (River Kinabatangan) about three hours’ drive away. The second pick up in Sandakan was for a young Latvian couple, who were extremely late (no apology to either us or the driver). They were nearly half an hour late and the anxious driver had to ... read more

Hello Halo Hostel, Kota Kinabalu Wednesday 18th April 2018 So far on this trip, travel arrangements have not exactly gone to plan. We decided to treat ourselves to a taxi ride to the airport rather than struggling on a busy bus with the rucksacks. We booked a taxi to pick us up from the D’Oriental Hotel in Petaling at 10.30 a.m. By 10.45 a.m. we decided it wasn’t going to show so asked the guy at reception if he could get us another one. The girl on reception the day before had ‘forgotten’ to book it, although she told us the night before that it was all confirmed!!! We should have taken the bus! We got another taxi at 11.000 a.m. which was OK. The Air Asia flight was noisy, crammed and dry; no alcohol. We ... read more

In ... read more

In the weeks prior to leaving Ireland, I was often meet with blank expressions whenever I mentioned Borneo as one of the destinations we would be travelling to. So as an introduction.. Malaysia consists of two parts. One part is the peninsula at the southern tip of the Asian continent which is commonly just referred to as Malaysia and the other part is an island known as Borneo which is half owned by Malaysia and half by Indonesia. Borneo is the third largest island in the world which I did not know until we got here and it has featured many many times in the Planet Earth nature documentaries given its unique flora, fauna and marine life. This was one of the main reasons we choose to come to Borneo over other alternatives such as mainland ... read more
