Geo: 5.01965, 117.746Sorry peeps, zooms on phones not good enough for wild orangutan shots!!Due to yesterday's disappointment of not seeing any ginger fuzzy apes and the fact we were being picked up at 10.30 to leave, we headed out to do a tree top canopy walk at 6.30am! Early!! James' cold was in full force last night, so sleep did not really happen for too long anyway!! We joined another group who were a little more unstable on their feet to head up the the canopy walk in the truck (was too early for that much up hill!!) we both took a stick with us incase we went off piste... boy did we go off piste later on!!The canopy walk consisted of 3 long bridges that stretched over the valley. It was high and I loved ... read more

Geo: 5.01965, 117.746Breakfast was at 7am so we could make a good start on our trek up to the lookout point before it got too hot. Breakfast was extensive, fruits, cereal, toast, omelettes and cooked both western and Malaysian. There were pancakes with bacon and syrup.... I/we could not resist. The trek took us up, very up. We saw a mock viper snake on the path. Abt a foot long and actually spotted by Emily, not our guide!! Our guide actually nearly stood on it!! And yes it was poisonous!!! Oh good!! We followed a termite colony moving house, a steady stream of them, all in a line for around 400m. Up trees, backdown trees, across roots and leaves and branches!!! It was incredible for bugs and so many millions of them. The first bit we stopped ... read more

Geo: 5.01965, 117.746The arrivals hall at the airport was hilarious, a room, a few seats and a low slung table as the luggage collection point and actually a surprisingly clean toilet (although you did have to put your hand in the cistern to flush it! Although there were a total of 10 bags coming off the plane, mine was one of the last to make it onto the shelf..... I think I must be jinxed!!We were met by a driver who escorted us to the rainforest lodge office. We signed our lives away in a very posh waiting room and the we were off on our 2hr 30min 4x4 journey up to the lodge, 20mins on Tarmac the rest in forestry roads. It was a tad bumpy to say the least. But on the way we ... read more

Geo: 6.15468, 116.147Well that was early. A 2.45am alarm was not the most welcome of sounds, as we rose at stupid o'clock to catch our flight north to the jungle. The lady at reception was lovely and we managed to get away with not paying for cocktails either night rather than just the first!! Bill paid, we were given an unexpected takeaway breakfast and greeted by our transport, who seemed much more friendly than he last, but alas still did not say a word to us.We drove through down town Kota and I was quite grateful that we stayed in the hotel yesterday and did not make the 2 hr round trip to see he city. There wasn't much to see. We drove passed the mosque, the tourist attraction of Kota, which was lit up in ... read more

Geo: 6.15468, 116.147The day was not too eventful after breakfast apart from the parrot who joined us on our room balcony as we got ready to head out. We sat, we read, we snoozed and listened to music on sun beds watching the world go by at the beach. We had to squeeze under the sunshade/umbrella for a few little showers, but nothing we could not manage! After getting ready for dinner we returned to the same bar as last night for a cocktail/beer before we ate. They always say a sunset is good after rain, they are not wrong!! It was incredible. It kept getting better!! The Malaysian restaurant was a buffet style all you can eat. I ate a lot!! Satay beef skewers were my favourite, but we tried a fair old mixture of ... read more

Geo: 6.15372, 116.148So this place is incredible!!The flight to KK was a little bumpy, but mainly consisted of a little food and broken sleep.... we had been on the go for a long time up until this point. It smelt like holiday when we got off the plane!! Our luggage as per usual, was the last off the plane and we were in the baggage collection for abt 20mins until the orange bag made an appearance! Finally mine appeared too, which meant it was now truly time to holiday!!We were met at arrivals by a guy with our names on a board and bundled into a mini van for the 40mins to the hotel. This place is posh. On arrival they rang a gong to signal our arrival and we were sat down in the foyer ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Sabah » Kota Kinabalu October 21st 2016

Last couple of days in Borneo, so just a short post because nothing really happened. Next I will be in India, so that will be exciting. I've added some squirrel photos to the last post (Mt. Kinabalu) and a not-very-good siamang photo to the first post. I didn't take many photos on the Malaysian stretch. Mt. Kinabalu has a nice cool temperature, perfect for someone like me who does not like heat and humidity. Kota Kinabalu is the complete opposite - meltingly hot and humid. The reason we came here with some days to spare was because Mr. Andy wanted to go to Pulau Manukan, a little island off the coast, to go swimming and snorkelling. Unfortunately for him, Typhoon Sarika was sweeping through Vietnam and the Philippines, causing high winds and lashing rain in KK. ... read more

From Sepilok to Mt. Kinabalu is about four hours by bus. You just head up the road from Sepilok to the junction with the main highway and flag down any bus heading past. The bus we caught was playing The Hobbit, and when that finished there was a Chinese movie called Monkey King 2 which had the most hilariously-indecipherable subtitles I have ever seen. Really the only reason I knew what was going on was because I was a big fan of the Japanese Monkey tv series from the 70s. There are a couple of places to stay just outside the gates of the national park. Tahubang Lodge is directly opposite and the Mountain Resthouse is five minutes walk along the road. There is accommodation inside the gates as well, but this is owned by the ... read more
