Wow-what a journey! We are so lucky to be able to travel the world and enjoy time off in our favourite part of the world-ASIA! It all started on December 21st as we boarded the plane to Kuala Lumpur from Stockholm, Sweden. Traveling as light as we could and ready for adventure we headed back east to our favourite traveling ground for the first time as a couple. Out trip started with a few days with friends in Kuala Lumpur which involved being treated to delicious food and singing Frozen's theme tune "Let it go" until we really wanted to let it go! The adventures got going a few days later when we flew to Sandakan, Malaysian Borneo. We quickly settled into our fabulously rustic room with very comfortable bed at Paganakan Dii Resort https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g1075066-d1105829-r340302556-Paganakan_Dii_Tropical_Retreat-Sepilok_Sandakan_Division_Sabah.html... read more

We were up so early this morning, 5 am! We quickly dressed and headed down to meet our pick-up. We were picked up around 5:40 and we stopped only once to pick up another couple. We drove for a couple of hours with a quick toilet break. We arrived at Beaufort Station and headed into the little restaurant there. I was starving by this point, so I got some breakfast. There was a little buffet set up so I went and got some noodles, curry puffs, and a chicken sausage. It was dirt cheap, only a few ringgit and we also got a couple of tea tariks. A good, filling meal to set me up for the rafting later. We got talking to the couple, who were on the trip with us, they were really nice. ... read more

Eek! Now, I have finished my Padi course, I can go out diving. We got up early again, I am so not used to this but it does make a nice change, and headed down to the dive shop. We had to pay for the dives that we were going to do today. Since we had dived with them before, we both got a bit of a discount. My friend got more as she had done more dives. Then we headed along to the Jesselton Point Waterfront and met up with the divemasters and the other divers at one of the cafes. We'd already had some breakfast, so didn't get any food. Once everyone was there, we headed down to the boats. They do a roll call and we were directed onto the correct boats. It ... read more

A day of recovery after three pretty full on days. We tried to sleep until late, but failed miserably, our bodies are just used to getting up early. We headed out to the beach near the Kota Kinabulu yacht club. The tide was out so there was plenty of space on the beach and barely a soul in sight. This place is a hidden gem, only a few locals taking a rest under the shade of a tree. We took a bit of a walk along the beach, it was so peaceful. We could see a couple of islands in the distance. There were loads of little crabs scuttling along the beach, we tried our best not to step on any. I also saw a big stork like bird taking a little paddle in the waves. ... read more

26th Dec: We woke up pretty early, after a late night. I must have been cold with the air-con on during the night as one time when I woke up, the blanket was wrapped around my head. I had a good laugh at myself. I hadn't realised that breakfast was included at the hostel, so that was a nice surprise. It was only toast and jam with coffee, but it saved us a few pennies. We had to be at the dive shop for about 8:15 am. Diving is early business, and I am not used to being productive in the morning, but I was excited and nervous for this. The dive shop was actually really close to our hostel, only about a five minute walk away. I got the impression that Kota Kinabalu is pretty ... read more

The end of the semester means two things for me: time to regroup, and time for field work--not necessarily in that order. I jetted off to Sabah as soon as my grades were submitted, in order to wrap up some field work that didn't get completed during the summer field season. Just a few streams with a handful of primary productivity measures required... but maybe I should back up a bit. In 2011 I started working on the SAFE Project, a large-scale fragmentation experiment that is a collaboration between scientists, an oil palm company (Sime Darby, the world's largest), and the government of Sabah, Malaysia. The government and the oil palm company agreed to leave different sizes of forest fragments intact in what will become a large oil palm plantation in Eastern Sabah, between Danum Valley ... read more

Borneo is the largest island in Asia and the third largest in the world . For the past couple of weeks we've been traversing the Sabah region, filled with incredible wildlife and nature . Ever since I seen pictures of the orangutan I have dreamt of visiting this island . We were lucky enough to see orangutans in the wild and plenty more at Sepilok rehabilitation centre, set up to reintroduce these wonderful creatures into the wild . The organgutans in Borneo are solitary and elusive creatures, but at the same time highly inquisitive and playful . Watching young orangutans play at the outdoor nursery in their specially constructed jungle gym was a fascinating experience . Borneo has a large number of endemic species, not least the proboscis monkey (easily identifiable because of its unusually large ... read more

On 1st/2nd December, we became the first Irish people to summit Mount Kinabalu (highest peak in SE Asia) via the new Ranau trail, newly reopened since a devastating earthquake last June. Up until the eleventh hour we didn't know if we were going to be allowed to climb based on our guides safety assessment. Thankfully we were and the mountain Gods couldn't have given us better weather, with clear starry skies followed by an amazing sunrise. Meeting Sabah's Minister for Tourism and being part of TV/video footage on this historic opening day was a truly memorable experience. The first day of the trek involved a steep 6k climb up through the Borneo jungle, which was really tough in the baking heat. We arrived at our overnight stop called Laban Rata about 3pm, where we sat out ... read more

For the last couple of nights I've been staying in Kota Kinabalu, the capital of the eastern state of Sabah. The city itself is really quite small, but, incredibly busy. Upon arrival here, I had about 20 minutes to sort out what I needed to go on a tour of a city with a guide for a couple of hours. We started off by going across the road from my hotel to what looked like derelict land with a few pillars on it, my guide explained that this was one of the oldest buildings in Kota Kinabalu, but it burnt down in the 1990's, it previously housed all the historical maps of the area (thankfully kept in the vault and they weren't destroyed in the fire). Developers have tried the buy the land, but the local ... read more

After seeing the orang-utans and sun bears at sepilok, I was taken to the Sim Sim jetty in Sandakan for a boat journey to the Abai Jungle Lodge. The boat journey took just over an hour and was a bit choppy in parts. I arrived at the lodge and was taken to my room which I'd been warned was basic and had no air-con, I have to say I was really quite pleasantly surprised, the room was lovely and although there was no air-con there was a huge fan on the ceiling which did a lot in helping cool the room. The lodge is situated the river, surrounded by thick rainforest. I had a little time before my first boat ride up the river so walked round the jungle boardwalks around the lodge to see if ... read more
