Our flight from Kuala Lumpur to Sandakan in Borneo was scheduled for 1.20pm. We had to be at the airport by about noon and it's about four hours between Bukit Fraser and the airport, so we didn't have to leave until 8am - which meant we could still avail ourselves of Puncak Inn's free breakfast which starts at 7.30am. Mr. Andy's sickness over the last two days had left him contemplating just giving up on the trip altogether and flying home - he'd even been on my laptop checking flights - but we got the taxi driver to stop at a doctor's clinic and once he had some antibiotics he started feeling better about things. It doesn't cost much to fly between KL and Sabah (NZ$62 for this particular flight with Air Asia) and it doesn't ... read more

Terimakasih Borneo! You were such a great introduction to Southern Asia for me. Over the years, I had heard so much about Malaysia, many travelers raved about its beaches and friendly people. But that never quite sparked my radar. And then a few planes fell out of the sky, and I was like, meh. So it was only after I read an article about rehabilitated orangutans at a sanctuary in Sepilok that I really wanted to visit. I did my standard Googling to see exactly where the hell Borneo was, I practiced how to say good morning, hello, thank you and goodbye in Malay, and most importantly, I watched comedian Bill Bailey do a UK travel program on proboscis monkeys and laughed myself silly for a rather long time. With that, I frantically dusted off my ... read more

Ranau 24-25 March 2016 Our hotel in Ranau offered a wholesome breakfast after our big Mt Kinabalu climb. We were all nursing sore quads, hamstrings and calves. Several were really struggling. It took me longer to get out of bed, trying to get the muscles going. We all found it better to walk down stairs either backwards or sideways. We had to laugh at each other. However, the exhilarating thought of our achievement was still high in the mind which helped (mentally) overcome the pain. We were staying in the middle of suburbia so were waken up at 4.00am by roosters crowing and dogs barking. Oh the variety travel offers!!! We were looking forward to a day around Poring and Ranau. First we visited the Sabah Tea Plantation and Factory. We had a jovial guide to ... read more

Back to Kota Kinabalu on 27 March 2016 After being in Weston and Beaufort, we returned to Kota Kinabalu. There was a very impressive mosque on the outskirts of KK, so we stopped the have a look at it. Our guide AJ is a Muslim and he spoke about the annual Ramadan which he participated in. This means that if he is taking a group of tourists up Mt Kinabalu, he does not break his 29 or 30 day fast. He talked about the strength mentally to maintain the fast. After booking into our hotel, we had an easy day, doing some shopping. When we got back to our hotel, a few of our travel companions had settled in with a few cold beers. We joined them for a couple before 4 of us, with our ... read more

Climbing Mt. Kinabalu 23-24 March 2016 Mt. Kinabalu in Malaysian Borneo is one of those accessible peaks that I in particular have been keen to conquer for some time, and so it was time to do it and to tick it off our list. I was really looking forward to it as was Tom (I think!). The two day one night climb in Kinabalu Park was well organised. We arrived at our accommodation in Kinabalu Park and had shared accommodation of 4 in Grace Lodge. This was close to a Botanical Gardens which we missed seeing as it closed before we got there. However, a walk through the adjoining bush was lovely. In the evening, we attend a briefing on the next day's hike. The butterflies in the stomach increased. Just before the briefing one of ... read more

Palm oil. I never gave it much of a thought before. Sure, it’s in just about everything we consume from Tim Tam biscuits to motor oil, yet not once did I ever think about its environmental impact on parts of the world like Borneo. This country is beautiful and charming. I spent over a week in the capital, Kota Kinabalu, enjoying the endless open air markets, sampling food at the local eateries (who knew Malay food was so fragrant and flavorful), touring historical museums and cultural exhibits, and taking jetty boats out to islands that dot the coastline. The local people are friendly and warm, and so, Malaysia was fast becoming my all-time favourite destination. Then I joined a group of fabulous Aussies for a scheduled tour that saw us travel around the Sabah region. We ... read more

Kota Kinabalu & Kudat Sabah 20 – 22 March 2016 After our early morning flight from Sandakan we arrived in Kota Kinabalu (known as KK) at about 8.45am. After Catching A Taxi from the airport we checked into the Best Western Kinabalu Daya Hotel. It was very central – close to the harbour and the forest. We settled in then found “The Coffee Bean” in the next street for a fantastic coffee. It was then off to the Sunday Markets which was a street away. With 100s of stalls of costume jewellery, food, hardware, plants and clothes as well as 100s of people, the temperature and humidity rose. Despite that, we had a good look around. We went back to the hotel for a cold drink then headed up the 250m of stairs to see the ... read more

Sandakan 15 March 2016 After breakfast at 7.00am, we depart Turtle Island in the same speedboat we arrived in and return to the mainland. It was a day for seeing some of the special features of Sandakan. We were driven around by a big tourist bus even though there were only 12 of us. First we visit the Central Market which consisted of fresh fruit and vegetables as well as fresh and dried fish and red meat. We then walked over to the Sheridan on the recommendation from 2 fellow travellers, that the cappuccinos were excellent there. We have been a little ‘staved’ of good quality coffee over the past few days. The downstairs cafe didn’t disappoint us. The coffee was excellent. The Sheridan is on the water over-looking the sea which had both pleasure and ... read more

Bilit 16-18 March 2016 What a fantastic 3 days we had at the Bilit Adventure Lodge which is on the Kinabatangan River in Sabah, Malaysia. From the time we arrived to the time we departed, we did 4 river cruises which included 2 x 6.00am and 2 x 4.00pm cruises in aluminium boats. On all of these cruises our guide and driver were incredible spotters as you will see by the photos. On our morning cruises, we would come back at about 8.00am for breakfast. It was always cooler in the morning, so light, long sleeved was the go! The 1st night we were there, we went on a night-walk and spotted so many birds. Of course they were not flying at night so were easily photographed. We also saw several mouse deer which were too ... read more

Turtle (Seligan) Island After leaving at about 9.30am from Sandakan Harbour it took a 400hp boat an hour to get us to Turtle Island. On the way we saw Pilipino pirates with black hoods on and 4 of the masked men with big guns, holding up this other smaller boat. I didn’t get my camera out fast enough to take a shot. We learned that there is now police on Turtle Island because there had been a kidnapping several months previously and lots of poachers. We settled into our basic accommodation and then 10 of us sat around telling travel stories etc. It was great.....not to mention the occasional joke. They were a good mob. After lunch we hired fins, goggles and snorkel and went for a swim in the sea where they had netted off ... read more
