After spending the holidays with families on the East Coast and West Coast, and putting in a couple weeks of work, we decided to escape again. Finding decent airfares to Bangkok, looking at a map of the area, decided on Borneo, a place we had almost visited a couple of years, but did not. So, we decided now was the time! Some quick email exchanges with Top Peak Travel who provided some excellent suggestions and a workable itinerary. And we were off! A couple of days in Bangkok, we stayed in our usual area near the river, and enjoyed exploring Chinatown getting ready for the Chinese New year celebrations. Talking to another couple at breakfast, they told us of a wonderful performance they had seen the night before Siam Niramit. We managed to purchase tickets for ... read more

1. My friends and I made an arrangement to meet up in Kota Kinabalu before flying to Tawau (southernmost of Sabah). 2. It was close to mid-night when we arrived at Tawau Airport. We knew it would take another 2hrs of driving from airport to Semporna and we knew the risk of travelling at night especially in this area. Despite all the hesitation, we brave our self to hop on a minibus with local driver which I myself pretty comfortable that he would make our road trip a comfortable and safe ;) 3. Upon reaching Semporna, we quickly checked in at a small lodge located approx 20mins from Jetty. 4. The next day, our driver picked us at noon as our boat trip to Mabul would depart at 2pm. 5. The trip by boat took more ... read more

De ... read more

DIVE DAY THREE - SIPADAN Feeling Better After dives one and two on Sipadan I had a day of rest, and moved back into the Cube Station. What a relief. The other women are so friendly and we have such fun sharing. I also found out there was tea available all day in the common room and every morning there was a really complete breakfast, as well. On my third dive day I grabbed fruit, toast and tea at the Cube Station and then caught my cab to the dive center. I got there ten minutes later than usual and the divemaster gruffly said I should go to the boat, which I did. And I waited, and waited and waited for the rest of the divers, so I hadn’t been holding them up. I was dreading ... read more

TAWAU BORNEO I stayed at City Garden Hotel in Tawau. I have been to Borneo three times, once in 2013 and again in 2014, but I never spent any time in Tawau. During the first trip I had some diver’s ear problems that caused me to miss my reservation to climb Mount Kota Kinabalu, but only temporarily. My hiking guide was a fourteen year old boy who could do the climb twice in one day. I am sure he was fed up with this slow old lady. I did a couple of other tours and then went to Semporna to dive at Sipadan, one of the top ten dive sites in the world. The second time I took a taxi straight to Semporna and dived with several dive shops so I could dive more than once ... read more

For those of you who were keeping a track of my adventures prior to me going to Sepilok, I apologise for the silence for the last 2 months. I spent May and June volunteering at Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre and whilst completing the volunteer programme at Sepilok we were asked not to blog due to confidentiality. If anyone is interested in my time spent working with the orangutans I’d be happy to answer any questions if you contact me directly. I’ve had so many photo opportunities, I literally have thousands of photos - there are a select few posted here, but rest assured I have many more to bore you with should you want to see them! In summary, I can confirm I had the best time of my life whilst working with the orangutans, experiences ... read more

After an emotional departure from Sepilok, I set off for Kota Kinabalu (KK). KK is so different from Sandakan which was the nearest city to Sepilok. It’s much more westernised, cleaner and modern. I enjoyed KK the last time I visited and I was looking forward to the next few days. A couple of days relaxing and a couple of days trying to climb Mount Kinabalu. The day of the climb, I was collected from my hotel by Amazing Borneo Tours at 6:20am for the 2.5 hour journey to the start point for my climb. It was quite nice to get out of the city and see parts of Kota Kinabalu I hadn’t seen before. Quite soon in to the drive we were in to the hills with beautiful views over the city and Mount Kinabalu ... read more

I was still feeling a bit groggy from yesterday's illness but definitely much better, although frequent toilet trips had kept me up over night. I had breakfast then hung about at the hostel for a while, then at 11:30 I called a Grab. It was earlier than necessary, three hours before departure and only a 20 minute drive to the airport, but there wasn't really anything better for me to do. There is a bus to the airport, but that costs 5 ringgit and a Grab was only 10 ringgit and right from the accommodation rather than down the street. Grab in KK really is almost too easy and cheap, I haven't bothered a with a local city bus at all while here. It was all very easy going through the airport, especially compared to budget ... read more

I woke up this morning feeling terrible. I had a headache and something that I had eaten yesterday very much disagreed with my digestive system. This is the first time I've had any problems like that though, and I've been eating all sorts of stuff, so I guess that's not bad. After some plain bread I was starting to feel a bit better and before going to the zoo, as my plan for today was, I went to find some proper breakfast that wouldn't upset my stomach and I found myself in quite possibly the most hipsterish place in all of Kota Kinabalu: a juice bar selling 12 ringgit smoothie things with nuts and vegetables and the sort of things that gullible people thing you should eat regularly like chia seeds and wheatgrass and all that ... read more
