I started the morning with a more leisurely start than usual at 7AM. I noticed that on the wall they have a world map with an unusual projection that I don't recognise. It's Malaysia centred with a split in the Atlantic and it looks kind of like a Lambert Cylindrical but it's not because it's a normal shape but because I'm not used to a split in the Atlantic I can't use the shape of Greenland as the judge that I normally would on what projection it is. Nice projection though! The boats to the islands depart when they're full, and mine left at about 8:50. My attire wasn't exactly typical for either place I visited. Khaki trousers, hiking boots, a camo shirt, and binoculars on a harness around my neck not exactly making me fit ... read more

Unfortunately it was raining at sunrise which is odd because I hardly ever rains at this time. But since I was up anyway, I went out to bird along the trails before breakfast. A Rufous-fronted Babbler was a nice bird to see which I had only seen once before and the common birds here are really cool. Interestingly, Black-and-yellow Broadbill is really common and easy to see while I spent ages and saw one at Sepilok and heard loads (the call is really cool and distinctive) at Danum but also never saw any. I think that's primarily because the canopy is much lower here than at Sepilok or Danum and it's easy to see the canopy birds. A particularly good bird from the morning was a Verditer Flycatcher which is a hill species that I thought ... read more

Sunrise over the mountains was spectacular, probably the best sunrise of this trip, and I started the day birding the trail. It was really birdy around l and mostly with common species that I've seen before but I added a couple of things and if this was nearer the start of the trip rather than at the end, I'd have added loads. I was a bit worried at one point because I thought I could hear a large dog barking (domestic dogs are the only animal that actually concerns me when I'm in a forest) but I never saw any dogs and I wonder if it was an odd sounding muntjac barking. A particularly nice mammal from the morning birding were Four-striped Ground Squirrels which I saw two of. They’re a fairly restricted range species so ... read more

(I notice that at my end at least, there's an odd block of formatting text where each paragraph break should be on this post and the last. That's not from my end but is something wrong with Travelblog. Hopefully it fixes itself because there's not really anything I can do about it.) I started as early as I reasonably could with breakfast at the restaurant at 7:30 when it opened and then got my stuff and went to wait for a bus. There isn't actually a bus stop or timetable at Mount Kinabalu so getting out involves standing by the side of the road and waving at anything that looks like it might be public transport. I was on the road just after 8 and I got a minibus to stop for me just before 9:30. ... read more

I really need to stop taking so many pictures of all the squirrels and laughingthrushes and yuhinas and things. All the common animals are really awesome/adorable/cool looking and they’re pretty much all endemic to the mountain, but the problem with such cool animals being everywhere and really conspicuous is that I keep taking lots of pictures of them. The ground squirrels and the yuhinas in particular are really funny in their behaviour but I really have to stop taking pictures of them all. I’ve been doing well lately, but at this point I’ve taken a lot of pictures. I’ve nearly filled my third SD card which will make 96GB of pictures from this trip so far. That’s a lot of data. And I don’t even have the excuse of shooting in RAW. I know that I ... read more

My very scientific title refers primarily to the Bornean Mountain Ground Squirrel and the Lesser (Short-tailed) Gymnure. The former is very common and extremely cute and fluffy, the latter I’ve seen once very briefly dash into the vegetation by the side of the road near the top not far from the Timpohon Gate. They super cool and not actually mice or even rodents (they’re insectivores, in the hedgehog family). There are lots of different squirrels around though, many of which are very cool like the Whitehead’s Pygmy with its awesome white ear-tufts as well as the almost as small Red-bellied Sculptor Squirrel along with several other montane squirrel species. If you like squirrels, Mt Kinabalu is definitely the place to be! There are also lots of treeshrews that look confusingly similar to ground squirrels. But the ... read more

It's really cold here! I knew it would be cold, but it's dramatically colder than I was expecting. It was definitely in the low teens last night and the high for today is supposed to be 24. Apparently it's generally 15 degrees colder here than the lowland. It's fine because I don't mind the cold, but I wasn't expecting it to be quite that cold during the night and I ended up sleeping under two massive blankets. The view this morning though (once I finally woke up after 9 - I needed that sleep) wow! Stunning! Amazing mountains, low cloud, and fantastic vegetation with tree ferns and pines and such. And from the accommodation I couldn't actually see Mt Kinabalu itself but that view in the gaps in the clouds is just something else. I should ... read more

My morning birding at Danum was quite productive and the French guys also found it more productive than usual completely independent of me. This seemed to be a common trend with occasional days of great birding and others with almost nothing in the same areas. I added quite a few new species actually, see the list below which were all from only a couple of hours this morning, as well as a great and first-photo view of a Large Green Pigeon being worth noting. I've refined my breakfast strategy by this point too so I don't miss out on birding. Breakfast is officially 7-8:30 but if you're not there at 7 on the dot there will be no food left and you'll be stuck behind a long queue and waste loads of birding time so the ... read more

I’m including these three full days in one post because my routine was much the same for all three of these days (and much the same as for my previous post which covered the first of my four full days at Danum) just looking for wildlife in the rainforest. It really is an amazing place here: it’s just right in the heart of a vast area of virgin primary rainforest with lowland forest stretching as far as you can see which is about as close to the natural state of Borneo as you can get. Borneo never had any open land or grassland naturally, just rainforest stretchinv to coastal mangroves. It does feel remote too, it’s two and a half hours along dirt roads to the nearest civilisation and there’s no other connection: electricity is from ... read more

Tuto cast malajzie som prakticky preletel. V pohode by som tu vedel stravit este dva tyzdne, plus dalsie dva na juhu. Trosku sa mi vypomstilo ist sem bez planu. Hlavne co sa tyka dedinky sukau, kde som mohol mozno ziskat lacnejsie ubytko resp balicek. Druhe zavahanie bolo nekupa letenky medzi tawau a kk.
