Date visited: We boarded a bus from the river camp area to Kota which took about 8 hours. Nice scenery en-route. It passed ok considering this was a bus journey and not a day train or sleeper train but getting into Kota seemed a nightmare. Queues on every entry point to the city seemed either blocked or queued up to the hilt - not what you want after being on the road for so long. Eventually the driver turned around and tried another route, then another before eventually we got here. Floods apparantly! We hooked up with another pair of travellers to share the taxi fee before checking in at our central hostel, Tropicana Lodge. Although the reviews were not great from the guidebook, there were brilliant online reviews of the owner Vincent. We arrived and ... read more

Our flight from Manila to Kota Kinabalu (KK) turned out to be a little more exciting than expected when Ais and Donna didnt make it to the airport in time! We reluctantly left without them and landed into sunny and extremely humid Sabah two hours later. We wandered the streets in search of a hostel and ended up finding one that far surpassed our expectations and it was there we settled for the next couple of days. Kota Kinabalu is a small and modern city built on the sea and was considerably more developed than i had imagined. Just off shore lie a small cluster of islands and a protected marine area (the Abdul Rahman Marine Park) and as our plane landed we realised that the city has an enviable location, sandwiched between lush jungle and ... read more

Date of Travel: 9-12 April 2008 Duration of Travel: 4 days Main cities visited: Kota Kinabalu Was in Sabah actually for a Community Service Project but managed to get a day and a half off to see some sights around Sabah. First up was the city of Kinabalu. Visited the Central Market at the sea front which sold mainly touristy products. Spent a bit of time walking around one of their largest shopping mall (directly opposite Le Meridien). Headed next to see one of Sabah's newest landmarks - the Foundation Building which was rather pretty. In the evening waited by the sea coast to enjoy the beautiful sunset and watching fishermen row their way home. The next day was spent visiting the Kinabalu National Park. The flora and fauna was surely a nice get away from ... read more

Kuala Lumpa After two months of hardcore travelling and staying in basic/ shocking accommodation me and Nick both woke up in a luxury air conditioned hotel. For the next week and a half we would be meeting our parents for a family holiday. After we took advantage of the hotels facilities including an amazing buffet we waited for the long awaited arrival of our parents. Later that evening a familiar voice shouted room service and in marched Eleanor Mum and Dad. The following morning of course we chatted for hours but we also ventured into KL and went to the top of the Menara Tower. I can now claim I have been up 3rd (Pearl Tower) and 4th biggest towers in the world! We also checked out the China Market where I was amused by Mum ... read more

29th March - 1st April - Kota Kinabalu After some pretty active days we decided that is was time to relax. We hit the golf course for a round of golf early morning. The course was spectacular, allowing for some great views of Mount Kinabalu in the distance. One night we decided to head into Kota Kinabalu itself for a look around. It was a lot larger than I had expected and after cruising the nightmarkets we ate at one of the best fish restaurants I have been too. With Dad present we were always going to go O.T.T, ordering most of the menu! It was delicious! On the 31st March, Jonathon and I decided it was time to try our hand at Wakeboarding. After watching some 'guide for dummy's' tutorials on the internet we hit ... read more

Over the past 7 months, I have been trying to make the most of three very cool things....school holidays, budget airlines, and being located in Hong Kong. This easter, I took the opportunity to travel to Borneo. Flying from Macau to Kota Kinabalu, I spent 9 days in Sabah, the Malaysian part of Borneo. Myself and 2 friends enjoyed the sunshine and had a nice break from Hong Kong. One of the major parts of the trip was climbing mount Kinabalu, but that was so major it deserves a blog of its own, so check out the next blog! Kota Kinabalu (KK) is close to some lovely islands. Only 20 minutes away on a ferry, and we were on some picturesque beaches with azure waters and some good snorkeling. Thankfully I was not in the water ... read more
