Jungle I arrived in Borneo without having read anything about the place as I'd spent a good deal of my time in Singapore fast asleep. I had thought that the island was an untouched jungle paradise and with this in mind, my vague plan was to spend a couple of weeks living in the trees with a family of orangutans. A quick chat with the staff at the very comfortable Step In Lodge in Kota Kinabalu shattered my dreams: a trip to see the orangutans at feeding time would only really take a day at most and no, you can't play with them. You're not allowed anywhere near them. Damn. So what was I going to do with the rest of my time in Borneo? SCUBA A bit like FBI Agent Jack Baer at the end ... read more

Our flight to Clark was only a quarter full but everyone had been allocated seats near the back of the plane, as though balance was an issue. There were so few passengers that, when we arrived, the baggage handlers didn't bother putting the luggage on the carousel and instead just dumped it on the floor inside the terminal. It was several hours before we could check in to our flight out of the Philippines, so I successfully eliminated all my loose change via repeated visits to Pizza Hut and Jollibees. The ludicrous UK security rules concerning liquids in your carry-on also apply to flights out of the Philippines, though the enforcement simply consists of being asked at security to drink your bottles of water before boarding the plane - after that, no-one checks. Unfortunately weather conditions ... read more

After my travelling buddy decided to leave me and head back to the UK for a short trip I took a trip back to the beautiful Island of Borneo,, see some close friends and do a small roadtrip!! After a couple nights of lazing around KK we packed our survival kit containing 5 vital items when going to an island; 1. Hammock 2. Bikini 3. snorkelling kit 4. Mosquito Repellant and the most vital of all 5. Beers and headed over to Mamutik where this time around the weather was pretty bad and the water was choppy but our second night consisted of a few beers , the guitar and me definately trying not to sing!! After getting burnt and a few dives me and Ritchie decided on a roadtrip down to Sipadan so we jumped ... read more

My first three days in the state of Sabah were dedicated to getting better. I had checked in at the hotel which was quite decent and thus suitable for being sick. I had even a TV with some five channels - only one of them broadcast English programmes though, but the others were great for studying Malay language… ;) I only went out to buy more water, to eat or to watch a movie in the neighbouring movie theatre (Ocean’s 13 and Sherk 3 if anyone is curious what kind of films they show in Borneo. By the way, Shrek 3 was premiered in Finland over two months later than in Malaysia!) I had also changed some books in Miri and had now two good and thick books to enjoy. The reason for such devotion for ... read more

Moving to a tiny island in the Caribbean Yes, we are moving to the other side of the planet. We are going to a volcanic island called Saba in the Dutch Caribbean. Saba is nothing like the other Caribbean islands. This is a 13 square km relaxing place with 1400 people, fantastic nature and great diving, check out Saba Tourism for more information. The island and lifestyle sounds just like the place for us. We are really looking forward to getting a small house and making a home again. We are joining Saba Divers which was voted to be the best dive centre in Caribbean by the largest dive magazine in Europe, Tauchen, so we are quite excited. Oh and it is also King Kongs home according to aNational Geographic article. Now we just need to ... read more

Transferred to the 5 Star Luxury of Shangri-La - Rasa Ria Resort - nothing like starting at the top end and showing us how we could spend our time in Borneo if we could afford it. Knowing all too well that our accommodation during the placements will be nothing like the Rasa Ria with its pool and beach then it was probably best not to become too attached. But there again I am not really a pool person so after an afternoon poolside I went to check out the recreation activities on offer and came away with a booking for a beach horse ride. At 5pm headed off down to the beach for my 1/2 ride on a horse called Barooda - who I was informed was once a polo horse belonging to the Sultan of ... read more

Started the morning by heading to the local market near the Waterfront - the main aim was to get my rucksack transporter bag repaired (torn courtesy of the airline in transit - just glad it wasn't the ruck sack). Found a lovely little local man who said he could repair it for 5MYR - I think by his standards this was probably overcharging but to me it was a good price and he did a fantastic job. Domestic sewing skills is so not my forte even if I had a machine available! Plus I have enough insect bites without adding needle puncture wounds to them - that is my excuse anyway. So I took the opportunity to take some photographs in the market and of the people around the market whilst he was busy with ... read more

Still suffering from the flight so took it easy today, after slow start we all headed off for a bit of a chill out on one of the Islands off Kota Kinabalu. We plumped for the Island of Sapi - a small island that forms part of the Tunku Abdul Rahman Park. We left on a speed boat to bounce our way island where as soon as we arrived the sun disappeared and the clouds came rolling in - seemingly we are at the start of monsoon and the rains will most likely make appearances most afternoons. Sapi is a very small little island with a pretty little sandy beach. Dispite clouds we enjoyed a bit of a chillout on the beach and some snorkelling in the shallows amongst hordes of Seargent Major fish and ... read more

Well I have arrived safely after a journey that seemed to take forever - it didn't go quite as smoothly as I had hoped. Started with a re-pack in Heathrow airport when I was told only one piece of hand luggage even though my small handbag and small ruck sack was less that than half the size of the persons before me!!! Flight was then delayed to Dubai and so when I landed I made a dash to get my connecting flight only to find that the next one was considerably delayed too which did have the plus side that my baggage was now likely to make the flight as well. Finally I arrived at Kuala Lumpar Airport at 11pm where I spent the next 5 hours trying to get some shut eye on a bench ... read more
