Borneo smells funky! I forgot how 'eau de Asia' seeps into yours sense like a slap in the face. Essence of sweaty heat, a dash of spicy coconut, clove tobacco and salty air. I love it. It's so great to be transported to another culture, busy with everyday life and totally anonymous once again among such friendly faces. The freedom is tangible. I love getting lost. Aimless wandering to observe the markets, the inevitable eye contact with others also watching life go by from their front step. Life is slow and fast. A few weeks holiday can translate to an endless imprint of adventure. I'm so ready!! After two over consumptive party nights celebrating my pending holiday, only shabby could describe my state of being on arrival. I NEVER sleep on the plane. Everyone seems to ... read more

Hello everyone, just finished 10 days in Vietnam. It coincided with Tet, which is the Vietnamese equivalent of Chinese New Year. Although it was cool to see the Vietnamese celebrate their major holiday, it was unfortunate that so many things shut down in the country during Tet, including the trains. This made it difficult as we were trying to work our way up the country. We started in Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City), where there were many fascinating sights with history about the Vietnamese War, which in Vietnam is called the American War. We saw the reunification palace, a perfectly intact palace where the South Vietnamese government ruled during the war. Everything is as it was left in the 70s and you could walk through the entire palace, including the president's office and the basement, which included ... read more

So, on to the final stop of my journey in Borneo. I had to take a boat from Pulau Labuan to Kota Kinabalu. This was a very choppy ride. I was sat at the front of the boat with no window, and the boat was hitting the waves hard. So it was a white knuckle ride all the way. The crew were havin a laugh when they put the Godzilla movie on the tv. There were some very nervous people. Not the nicest 3 hours I have ever spent on a boat, although the movie was good. Arrived into KK in early evening. I found in the travel bible a cheap hostel called Step In Lodge. Dorm bed with fan just 25 Ringitt (GBP4ish) a night with breakfast. Met a scuba diving couple from Essex and ... read more

WOW!!! What an experience it was, the most humbling experience of our lives. The Iban tribe live in whats called a long house about 100 metres long all made of rotting wood, with a huge communal verander and 16 different families living in there separate living quarters all under 1 roof. All three generations of them! It took us 4 hours by road from kuching then a further 1 hour by a long boat ... read more

Jungles, rivers, mountains and wildlife. We flew from the Philippines to the Borneo Island of Malaysia. We were a dubious about the weather that would greet us, as we’d heard about bad rain storms covering much of south East Asia. But to our delight we’ve been very lucky with sunny hot weather (just!). Good to keep totting up the tan! First stop, Kota Kinabalu and stayed in Summer Lodge, a typical backpacker venue. While in Kota Kinabalu we had to work out where to go in Borneo, as we’d little previous knowledge. So lots of surfing the net and leaflet reading and we were all planned out. Next stop Mount Kinabalu. Only a 2 hour journey and in a cheap but very luxurious leather seated taxi, we were spoilt! We stayed in a plush looking resort, ... read more

My trip to Sabah will be presented in 3 parts - the Coast (Kota Kinabalu and Kinarut), the Jungle (a night in the jungle and Malay village home stay, the orangutans at Sepilok, and the Probiscus monkeys) and the Mountain - Mt Kinabalu. So here starts part 1..... I arrived in Kota Kinabalu on 21 December 2007 having managed to start and finish packing only a few hours earlier. It was the least prepared I have ever been for an overseas holiday, such a last minute thing. My accommodation was initially a cheap hostel right in the heart of KK but I upgraded after 2 nights to a 3 star hotel. My first few days on my own were interesting - Carols by Candlelight at the local Catholic cathedral (in English, Bahasa and Mandarin) white water ... read more

Tonight i will stay in Kota Kinabalu and the hostel here is a bit run down to say the least but it's only £2.50 a night so who cares. This place is really poverty stricen and a little intimidating. Tomorrow though i set off to climb Mount Kinabalu, which is 4,100m high. Im looking forward to it although im told it is a very tough climb but im sure im up for the challange, it's deffenately something different to anything else i have done. I will stop over the night at a lodge about 3/4 of the way up then get up at 2am the next morning to make it to the summit before getting back down to rest my legs some natural hot springs! After this i go over to the Sepilok Orangutang sanctury before ... read more

A dozen of us, colleagues and business associates spend 9 days holidaying in Sabah from November 22nd, 2007. We are Malaysian exploring the most beautiful state of Malaysia. Generally the weather was wet throughout Malaysia but I must say that we are blessed that wherever we were, the weather was good for our activities. We landed in KK at noon on the 22nd and our KK friend, nicknamed “Sabah" took us for a sumptuous seafood noodle lunch. The first day is sort of a free day for us to get ready for the activities for the rest of the trip. We spend our time shopping for food and gears. We had contacted our guide for our first activity, a Homestay at the fishing village at Mantanani Island. We scouted this for the web. The weather was ... read more

Day 1 - Sibu to Miri We anticipated a long journey to Kota Kinabalu or KK in short when we started our trip by coach bus from Sibu to Miri and to KK via AirAsia from Miri. The bus connection is really due to the high cost of air travel imposed by ‘Mas Wing’ where cost is more expensive than the former Fax. That is one of the setbacks of MAS rationalization exercise to domestic sector. Anyway, it helps the road transport sector as the bus company told me that it started to see some profits only this year after suffering losses from the past six years they were engaged in the business. The bus departed from Sibu at 8.30 p.m. We made a short stops mainly for toilets at Selangau and Batu Niah before ... read more

;) Mt. Kinabalulta joka tapauksessa napattiin pimeä taksi Kota Kinabalun suuntaan.. parikymmentä euroa kouraan ja reilun sata kilometriä taittui nätisti hostellin pihaan asti.
