we arrived in kota kinabalu (KK) in the early hours of the morning as we had traveled throughout the night on a bus from Simporna, luckily there weren’t many passengers on the bus so I got the prime spot at the back to lie across four empty seats, it was freezing with the air con blowing so I grabbed my sleeping bag from the boot and slept the whole journey. I only rolled off the seat once when the bus had to break suddenly. Apart from that it was a goodnights sleep. We stayed in KK for a week, while we were there we didn’t really get up to anything exciting, watched some DVD’s James got a bit of a fever so I played nurse for a couple of days, there was a market on ... read more

My hair is all matted and messy, I'm red in the face, my body feels relaxed, utterly and completely satisfied...that's right folks that can only mean one thing...diving!!! Bliss, bliss, bliss. If this is all my life amounted to, it would be okay. The dayt before yesterday, a business card in hand, I walked into Scuba Paradise. Lo and behold there was Reuben. A rather tall guy with a dark tan and a sun burnt face. Haha...a beach bum, I like him already. It wasn't until later that I realized how much he reminds of my brother in a lot of ways. Arrangements were made, my hotel pick-up arrived at 9.30 in the AM...it was Henry. We drove the 15 minutes to Sutera Harbour where Boy met us in a speedboat. There is no other ... read more

Nice day was just what the doctor ordered after lots of trekking in Sarawak..especially as our legs have been suffering since the Pinnacles. We met an English and an Irish Girl at the hostel travelling together who were up for catching a boat over to one of the Islands near KK. We ended up going to Manukan. Lovely white sands and some alright snorkelling. If I said I got a little sunburnt on the backs of my legs - I'd be lying! This has been our first day on the beach and exposed to sun really as have spent most of the time in the Rainforest. Had dinner in the hawkers night market with the girs. Some BBQ tuna and steamed rice. Good place for atmosphere! ... read more

Touched down in Kota Kinsbalu late afternoon. Air Asia is a little shambolic but they seem to get the job done. Greeted by an over-excited dude holding a piece of plastic with my name on, after a hearty handshake we went to his jeep packed 2 feet from the airport. A short drive and we were at the hostel, it has everything we need and is pretty good but not what I expected. It is basically a family home, with just a couple of dorm rooms. Can't complain tho, they seem friendly. Not much in the town really, doesn't seem too touristy. Found a proper Malay supermarket tho, can't believe how cheap things are. Found a bakery brought a few things that look like bread only to bite into them and get a strange evil goo ... read more

So we had another night in Miri on Sat 7th April, Legs starting to feel like jelly now. Our Hostel "Highlands" in Miri was on the top floor and it was very amusing trying to climb up and down the stairs I can tell you! Next 8am flight to KK (Kota Kinabalu) on Easter Sunday. This is the Capital of the State of Sabah (Malaysian Borneo). Had a recommendation from the Italian couple to stay at Akinabalu Hostel, so headed straight there. Had a nightmare day trying to sort out itenary as found out Mount Kinabalu was fully booked unless you wanted to pay 100 pounds through an agent (more like rip-off merchants!) We soon realised that Sabah is a tourist trap where your fleeced at any opportunity. Much more tourists here too! Very different to ... read more

We arrived on day one after a 3 hour flight from KL. Met up with the gang without any complications. After coffee we headed into town to look for a place to stay. After looking at a couple of places we ended up at this charming lil place and stayed for 2 nights. Ahh don't feel like doing anything today. Not even write. Will update later. ... read more

We were met at KK airport by Vincent, the hostel owner, who spoke faster than he drove all the way into town. He was very welcoming and promised to arrange our whole trip for us the next morning. It was roasting even though it was night when we arrived and we had the room without a/c! Next morning we weren't able to book ourselves onto the dive trip we fancied as it was full so went out for a walk in to baking heat to think about our options. People in Borneo just seem to volunteer their help which was great. Not only did we find a great restaurant (pizza and pasta, yum), our waiter pointed us in the right direction to go off and sort out our trip by ourselves. One dive trip and island ... read more

We got the ferry at 1pm from Muara to Pulau Labuan, on the way to the ferry terminal we thought we had spotted an information board so went over to have a look; it turned out to be a wanted Board for about twenty Indonesian men with mug shots, it did make me laugh. Another thing I forgot to mention about Brunei was that it is illegal to kiss in public & not customary to shake hands with the opposite sex, just a little interesting fact! We arrived at Pulau Labuan & headed to the hostel listed in only Lonely Planet book, it was a complete hole but was the only place that was a reasonable price with an available room so we decided to stay for one night & head to Kota Kinabalu on ... read more

After an awful night in Pulua Labuan we were grateful to arrive back in Borneo, but this time in Sabah. We had bought first class tickets so managed to get a bit of sleep on the boat, but as the air con was turned up full pelt we were freezing. They also had a film on but it was the cheesiest kung fu film ever, with Holly Valance and some other flakes in it. We stopped at a cafe on the pier for breakfast before the ten minute walk to our hostel. As out lonely planet is a few years out of date it was no longer there but we did find a little gem of a place called the step up lodge. Very nicely decorated, clean and cheap, a right touch! We decided to ... read more

Selamat Datang! The 3 weeks of Phase 1 of our Programme have now come to a successful close. How time flies! Our teams have spent the best part of the last month living and working in small rural communities, in remote environmental conservation areas or trekking through remote jungle. They’ve started building the infrastructure for much-needed village or forestry facilities, taught English, organised sports tournaments, learned how to cook local food and much more besides. Most importantly perhaps they’ve learned to adapt to life without the things that many of us take for granted: running water, electricity, beds to sleep in and the other material and psychological comforts of home. The highlight of last week was undoubtedly Monday, when the 9 groups arrived back from their project sites and then stayed for a couple of nights ... read more
