Ce sera le dernier dépassement ... read more

So today we have a full day to explore around the city of Jaipur. It is billed as one of the best places in India to see and experience. Just from what I saw last night I am sure it is. We all met for breakfast around 8 and then had the bus ready for us at 9 to take us out and about town for some extraordinary site seeing. We started with a trip to see the Hawa Mahal. It is the second most photographed building in India (guess what the first is). It was built in 1799 to enable the women of the court to watch the processions. Very generous of the local rulers since women were usually not allowed near the celebrations at all. It has hundreds of windows where they used to ... read more

Today was an early day up at our hotel. The hotels here have been great so far. (Though the last night was kind of rough with several trips to the bathroom.....Delhi Belly has set in). It was a good bus ride through the countryside to see things outside the cities but the highway system sure seems terrible. And I mean terrible!! The roads are really really bad shape. There are sooo many ruts and bumps in the roads that you often wonder how the cars and trucks survive a day's drive. But then you look at them and it all makes sense....they are also in really bad shape. We arrived at our heritage hotel around 4 or so and had a relaxing afternoon to walk around the town of 10000 or so. Who knew there were ... read more

Well, we arose to a very foggy and cold (8C) Delhi in the morning. We had to be ready to go by 8 or so as we had a 7 hour bus ride to Jaipur. The highways here are insane. Definitely not like at home. There are bumps and cracks and pieces missing everywhere. It was like riding the wooden roller coaster at the PNE. All highways here seem like that.....more on that in later blogs. While in the city we thought it was strange that people just went here there and everywhere when they felt like it. They do the same thing on the highways. Leaving Delhi seemed to go on forever. Once out I tried to sleep some on the bus...but those bumped had other plans form me. We arrived in Jaipur around 6pm. ... read more

"Can you reheat this Christmas pudding, please?" "Excuse me, sir?" "We eat this at Christmas, can you heat it up?" "No problem, sir." Poor chap it was a strange request. It did mean that we got to have Ian's home made Christmas pudding on Christmas Day. Jane's family back in Sheffield were having the same pudding Ian had made. We had moved to the Narain Niwas Palace Hotel (www.hotelnarainniwas.com) for the two days over Christmas and this should not have been, and to be fair was not, difficult for the waiters to oblige. We gave them a taste so they could experience this black sweet mass these foreigners insisted on eating. The hotel was very comfortable with large beds, a sitting area and ensuite bathroom. It had been built in 1928 for a General Amar Singh ... read more

After watching the sunrise over the Taj Mahal with mist rising from the river below, we travelled towards Jaipur. The most fascinating place on the way was the Abrahami step well. A huge upside down pyramid shaped well, 20 m deep With stone staircases leading down. We entered Jaipur and it's beautiful PinkCity , with red sandstone walls and palace buildings. It really is a stunning place to see. It is wonderfully congested with buses, cars, motorbikes, rickshaws , cows and people and lined with small shops selling all sorts of goods. Whilst here we also visited Amber fort + saw a sound and light show about Jaipur history. It was v interesting and beautiful with super views. We also saw the City Palace where the king still resides. The most amazing was the 300 year ... read more

My day was spent at this fort mostly and it was interesting as far as forts go. They are reminders of past times of defense and war of which I am against. The view over Jaipur was fantastic and you really get a picture of exactly how big this capital city of Rajasthan is. Anyway I will try to upload some pictures of this fort and hope you enjoy the photos I select and find them interesting to look at.... read more

Just another day walking around in Jaipur. Today was spent relaxing since it is my Day of Atonement and a fasting day for me. When fasting I do not have so much energy to just to pray to God and read the Bible and also go into the ucg.org web-site and find out exactly why I am celebrating God's Holy Day has been my day today. The pain of not eating did affect me and put pain in my stomach but for God I would do anything. Now I will try to upload some photos of some pictures I took during my walk around the last couple of days.... read more

Geo: 26.8515, 75.814We had a later start today. After breakfast we headed out of the city of Jaipur. As we drove along the road we saw peacocks, monkeys and elephants. Our first view of Amber Fort was from across a lovely lake. The fort is perched high up on a hilltop surrounded by a large stone wall that goes on for miles. We could see elephants carrying people on there backs up the winding road to the palace. We did not experience this as we had heard that the elephants are treated poorly by their owners. So, we enjoyed a wild jeep ride along narrow cobble stone streets dodging camels and elephants along the way, quite thrilling. The fort was built in 1592 by a Maharajah and it is a superb example of Rajput architecture. It had ... read more

Geo: 26.8711, 75.8351After a 1 hour drive from Agra we arrived at Fatepur Sikri for our first tour of the day. We toured the fort and mosque. It was interesting and well preserved. We wore little plastic beanies when we went into the beautiful white marble mosque. We then wandered through the local shops and streets. That is always quite an eye opener! We enjoyed a local Thali meal on a roof top terrace over looking the town. We could see locals cooking and doing laundry on their roof tops. We love watching the everyday street life. There are always cows, bulls, dogs, donkeys, horses and camels wandering free thru the streets.Every where we wander when entering local sites we are swarmed by hawkers. We are getting very good at ignoring them. They are not as ... read more
