Having been upgraded on our train bound for Jaipur, we woke up on our train carriage beds refreshed and ready to face India once more. We really didn’t have too much to go on as to what Jaipur would bring us, however we knew that it was a large city, was full of bazaars (markets) and that it would more than likely be pretty crazy. We needed to be prepared. The way we decided to do this was to find a nice hotel that was out of the immediate vicinity of the Old city (where the chaos would be at its peak), and that was affordable. Somehow, all three of these things were bestowed upon us when we managed to book the Madhuban hotel 2kms from the Old City. In addition to this great find we ... read more

Of the four color-themed cities in Rajasthan, the Pink City is my least favorite. With a population of 3 million, the provincial capital of Jaipur is much larger and more congested than the blue, golden, or white cities, yet still lacks the impressiveness of other large metropolises such as Delhi, or the grandiosity of the Taj Mahal in Agra. Nevertheless, it is regarded as the western point of the tourist ‘Golden Triangle’ along with the two aforementioned cities, and attracts a huge number of domestic and international visitors. The city was painted entirely in pink in 1876 for the visiting Prince of Wales, and to this day local laws dictate the preservation of the pink look, particularly within the walled old city at the center. For all three of my visits to Jaipur, I didn’t even ... read more

Train stations in India are very lively places. They are a mix of people coming and going from all over the country, people frantically trying to buy non-reservable tickets, and people who have set up shop on blankets, filling the station floor, waiting for trains to arrive. When we arrived at Varanasi train station, it was 36 degrees, with clothe soaking humidity. This was our first Indian rail experience, and we wandered aimlessly amongst the chaos trying to figure out when and where our train would be, when a station employee (real this time!) directed us to the ‘tourist room’. “Tourist room?!”, we thought. We tiptoed through the families spread out, sleeping on the station floor, and came to a door marked ‘tourist room’. Inside was a large air-conditioned room with leather couches, private bathroom, and ... read more

In Jaipur we stayed at an amazing Marriott Hotel. It was so nice, I was reluctant to leave. However, I am glad I did. Jaipur is a walled city, nicknamed the “Pink City”. All the buildings inside the walls are painted a coral pink and are required to be maintained that way. We began our day with our guide, Amit and our driver Shyam. First stop, the Hawa Mahal, the Palace of the Wind. This is nothing more than a façade built by the King so his Queen could view the activity of the bazaar without being seen. It contains 365 windows, so she could have one window for each day. Our next stop was the Amber Fort perched high on a hill near Jaipur. Just like the emperors who ruled here centuries ago, we ascended ... read more

Jaipur is in Rajasthan. One would think the landscape is more of a desert. On the contrary, it is surrounded by lot of hills with green trees. It does not rain a whole lot here though. Average rainfall in a year is 12 to 15 inches of which majority is July and August. Before starting to talk about the sites, it will worthwhile to mention that the best breakfast served during the tour is really here. Huge spread of International, South, North etc. On top, they can make dosa per your order. Praveen wanted pancakes here as one of the stations was serving pancakes. The waiter there made a mickey mouse shaped pancake for Praveen! As usual we loaded up as much here. Unfortunately, we had to rush through since the guide had warned that the ... read more

We planned to check out after completing the Agra fort tour. We left the hotel around 8:40 after a filling breakfast. The fort is only 15 minutes from the hotel. Nadeem, our guide was as usual very informative, full of quips and stories about that period. Agra Fort is a UNESCO heritage site. Only 25% of the fort is open was visitors and the other 75% that used to allotted for Mughal army at time is occupied now by Indian Army. I have never seen such a big fort and a well planned area for living. There were multiple palaces within that compound for various Mughal kings, queens, harem, priests etc. Court of common man, court of nobles were setup very nicely. View of Taj Mahal from certain privileged rooms were spectacular. There is Yamuna river ... read more

There are always advantages to every travel situation in life, and this is never more true than when you are planning a trip to India. Never forget that this vast country is, geographically, a sub-continent. From the snowy peaks of the Himalayas in the north, through the deserts to the west, down to the steamy heat of the south, there is a huge range of climatic zones. So whenever you plan your journey, there will always be the weather factor to be considered. Given the size of the country, there is no single ‘ideal’ time to visit India. For example, if you wish to travel to Ladakh, high up in Kashmir, you can only do so during the hot summer months, when the snow melts in the passes, and the road and airport become, once again, ... read more

The title says it all, we rode a top a majestic steed, a king among elephants today. Pinky was no ordinary elephant, he was a friend, a confidante a protector....among other things. His name was Pink and he changed my life today. We rode Him to the Amber Palace and Fort. We the explored the labrynth of a palace which looks across to a massive wall, second in size only to the Great Wall of China. And then we saw monkeys! I could watch those things for hours. The Hawa Mahal. Or palace of the winds is really nothing more than a facade as we were urged not to go inside and dabble with the local mafia. historically it was used by women who weren't allowed to leave their houses. The holes in the wall could ... read more
