Hello all! As you will know from the previous post Tals has unfortunately been very ill. I woke up our first night here to find her violently shivering despite the fact she was burning up. Then the vom started... Poor old Tals was then being violently sick for the next 24 hours as well as having a high fever and couldn't even keep water down! Luckily I have experience of looking after Plops in a similar condition(!) so I was on hand to be nursemaid! After many cool soothing flannels on her forehead and then some dyorolite she was starting to improve by the evening and is much better today and well on the road to recovery! Luckily the people at the Homestay have been very kind and thoughtful and have helped us re-schedule our activities ... read more

Jaipur day 1 Train ride from Agra o Jaipur We woke up at dawn in Agra and headed out our hotel to catch our taxi ride, same guy we hired for the Agra tour. Unfortunately, he was not there and so we could not afford to wait longer so we took a tuk tuk from the area to the train station. The tuk tuk said 100 rupees, but negotiated the price and paid 50 in the end (it was a 20 minutes ride only). We arrived to the train station to see on the board our train was cancelled UHGGGGG India! Well we got in a long line to ask if there was another train coming and they said yes, but it was all booked and the only places left were on general class: meaning standing ... read more

Tuesday 12th Jimmy was at the doctors today so Lak drove us to the touristy bits. We also went to see a Guru, I was skeptical but when we walked in he told us both where we are from and told Marlies she must be in something like nursing or social work; she does both. He said I have healing hands and should do something involving massage - I'm doing sports therapy at uni. We both had a small sesh with him, in the US and Oz he charges thousands but at his home he doesn't charge. Hard to believe but it is like a sixth sense- he knew so many personal thins, also, he asked how old my mum is.. I said 41 and he corrected me to 42, he was right! (Sorry Mum). That ... read more

After our complimentary toast and a luke warm shower we met our chauffeur who took us tp the train station. We were advised to arrive an hour early due to the 'commotion' at the train station and not to show anyone but the officials our train ticket; although I found the station not busy and not even the officials wanted to see our tickets. Things were running suspiciously smoothly! We were in one of the sleeper carriages but each had three bunks to ourselves it was so quiet. There's no chance of going hungry either, every 10 mins someone walks through shouting 'chi!' (tea) - we also had a cheeky samosa. When we arrived at Jaipur Jimmy, another rickshaw driver, greeted us off the train and took us to our next hotel, giving us his guestbook ... read more

Wednesday 13th (Agra) We left for the station at 6.30, this time we were in a different class that was very spacious and included breaki. We arrived at 'Agra Fort' at 10.30 and got another auto rickshaw for the day. Our hotel wasn't as nice as Jaipur but still miles better than the hostels we were expecting! Today we saw the red fort, it's a big red fort. And then visited some gardens on the opposite side of the river to the Taj Mahal - just a beautiful site! We had lunch in a nice garden cafe were I had a smashing masala. When the driver dropped us back at the hotel we gave him 600 rupees & despite telling us we could pay him what we thought it was worth (and the day before we ... read more

Jaipur day two We were met at 8.30 after an OK breakfast at the Holiday Inn and driven out to the Amber Fort, an impressive building even from the roadside. We queued for the elephant ride while chatting to our new guide, Vikram. After a 45minute wait we mounted the elephant, and made our way up the side of the fort. Quite a rocky ride with several nature stops, the elephant not us. We arrived in the square and took a guided walk around the part of the fort that was open. This was built in 1727 and took 30years to complete. The total perimeter was over16 km and included walled ramparts like he Great Wall of China, that were being restored. The fort is made of red sandstone and white marble with a separate palace for ... read more

We arrived in Jaipur on Wednesday afternoon. Our hotel there had a nice and quiet garden, so we first had a cup of tea there. Then we wanted to to what we usually do when we get to a new city: walk around, explore and get a first impression of the city. However, we soon realised that this was not enjoyable at all. There was no pavement that would deserve the name, it was noisy and dirty, and not even the shops along the road looked inviting. So we decided to have an early dinner in the nearby Pearl Palace Hotel. It has a nice rooftop restaurant with a nice view of the city. There we had a wonderful dinner and sat and relaxed a while before catching a motor rickshaw back to our hotel. Our ... read more

Well we are home at last !!! Our trip has been amazing but before we sign off we need to tell you a few things about our “Golden Triangle Tour”. (Sorry no computer to record there!) First we found India a country of massive contrasts- real poverty with families living on rubbish dumps with any available material for roofs etc to very modern large houses. It is still very male dominated in some areas so Sally’s blonde hair caused quite a stir, especially when we stopped at traffic lights!!!! We toured from Delhi to Agra to Jaipur and back. Our favourite place was Jaipur with its colourful shops and wide streets with camels, oxen and horses all travelling on the roads with the cars and bikes, even sometimes just nibbling food in the middle of the ... read more

'A journey through Rajasthan' - India - 4 Mumbai-Udaipur-Ranakpur-Jodhpur-Nagaur-Roopangarh-Jaipur-Ranthambore-Keoladeo-Fatehpur Sikri-Chambal-Agra-Delhi-Shimla-Dharamsala-Pong-Amritsar Nagaur-Roopangarh-Jaipur 25th February 2013 Gone are the rocky Rajasthan hills as we leave Jodhpur by car, heading for Nagaur and the Cattle Fair. Nagaur is India's second largest cattle fair and the main reason for our diversion into the wilds of Rajasthan. One thing we had failed to discover in our research was the vast renovation project being undertaken on Nagaur's Ahichhatragarh Fort. The other thing we were previously unaware of was that Devendra's father, Karan Singh Bhati, (we met Devendra in Jaipur as you might remember) was responsible for the Royal Tent; a unique, moveable, 100 tented hotel complex, currently in the grounds of... read more
