Day 14 - 2nd day in Jaipur Today, after a hearty breakfast, we set off from the hotel at 7.30am toin our usual 5 tuk tuks. The first stop was to view the heart of the mandala the central palace quarter, Hawa Mahal palace complex, known as the "Palace of Winds" was part of the City Palace, an extension of the Zenana or chambers of the harem. Its original intention was to allow royal ladies to observe everyday life in the street below without being seen. Constructed of red and pink sandstone highlighted with white lime, the five-storied facade is peppered with 953 small windows. The breeze (hawa) that blows through the windows keeps it cool even in hot months, and gives the palace its name. After staying their for about 10 minutes for an information ... read more

Day 13 - heading on to Jaipur- The Pink City Both Jude and I had a really good nights sleep last night, and feel so much better for t! We got up at 7.30. It was just a case of showering and checking for missed items to put in my bag last minute....... For me! For Jude it was a bit more than that. We were both laughing at the enormous job in hand for Jude! Her stuff! Jude has shopped for England!she began by collecting her stuff from around the room, then systematically rolled everything. So far, a good. It was the next bit that was amazing..... How on earth she fitted all of her items into that backpack .... Was an amazing feat. Hats off to you Judy, I would have. Never believed it ... read more

Evening everyone - it's 23:12 as I write. Today we left Delhi for a 7 hour minibus drive to Jaipur which I'm led to believe is the capital of Rajasthan. It's smaller than Delhi with a population of around 3m ish I think. The journey was pretty none eventful compared to driving in the capital, but that said still some very crazy and scary driving. Motorways and A and B roads don't really exist here. One minute you are on Tarmac the next a humpty bumbty road with pot holes and speed bumps/sleeping police men (not the human kind asleep in cars) in random places. Lots of construction work which seems to indicate that they are building infrastructure but at a vetslow rate. Small villages appear out of know where with great frequency and of course ... read more

The road from Agra to Jaipur was completely in line with what we had already seen in India, namely crowdy, chaotic and full of surprises... If you compare the traffic with the traffic-rules in Europe, the first thing that comes to your mind is something like "This situation is crazy!". But after a while, you can see that there is a system in it. One of the tricks is even written on most of the trucks: "Blow Horn". Since the local drivers all have the same driving habits, they can avoid -even if it is just at the last moment- accidents. Not entirely true... in Jaipur we once saw an accident. After they both checked if their vehicles were still working, they just continued their way. When we got closer to Jaipur, we saw a change ... read more

So, after finally leaving Mumbai on the 9th of November after a little bus cancellation the day before, we've come up to the northern region of Rajasthan! It's a colourful vibrant region, filled with palaces, forts, lakes and mountains, the scenery here is stunning. We started in Udaipur, the white city, which has a magnificent city palace, over looking Pichola lake, which has the Lake Palace hotel within the middle of it, the scene for the James bond film Octopussy - which is screened in many of the cities restaurants daily! It's a city of small, winding streets, similar to those in the towns of Italy and Greece and its a lovely size to stroll around. I particularly enjoyed spending time in Jagdish temple which is a large Hindu temple in the centre, watching people coming ... read more

Accommodation - Alsisar Haveli Heritage Hotel Weather - Warm, sunny, blue sky with haze 26C Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan, was built in 1727 by the Rajput ruler, Jal Singh, and is known as the Pink City due to the pink/terracota-coloured walls of buildings throughout the old city. In the morning we visited the magnificent Amber Fort, the site of the ancient Rajput capital which displays Mughal-style architecture with traditional Rajput influences. What a surprise, the best kept secret of the tour so far, our transportation along the path to the fort was on Shakima, an Indian elephant!! Feeling like (but not looking like) Maharaja & Maharani we entered the inner courtyard through the majestic Sun Gate atop our noble beast. The Amber Fort was the best fort so far, protected by massive ramparts following the ... read more

On our journey today we crossed the border from Uttar Pradesh, the state with the highest population, into Rajasthan, the state with the largest land area. The trip was 240km in length and was approximately 7 hours in total with a stop at Fatehpur Sikri and also a short lunch stop. This blog consists mainly of photographs taken from the coach window showing typical life on the streets of both Agra and Jaipur and of the many different forms of transport seen on the roads of India and what a motley collection of vehicles that is!!! Our guide summed it up with the phrase - "If it moves, be it with wheels or legs, it will be used for transport in India". A collection of cars, decorated lorries, buses - old and new, auto-rickshaws, bicycle rickshaws, ... read more

I woke up at 6am, ready for the train to Jaipur from Agra. Unfortunately the train wasn't ready for me and turned up a whole 2 hours late! This perplexed the shit out of me, so I asked around in that frantically stressed-out way that commuters often do, sure I'd mucked up somehow. The most comprehensible response I got was that it's "not an important train". Turns out there's only one track, and my unimportant train had to make way for all the others. As usual in India I made another friend at the station, and imparted as much info about my life as was required in a typically strained conversation, while wishing I was still in bed. Another power nap on the train left me with just enough time to skim through my Lonely Planet, ... read more

I was thinking back over the strange and terrifying people i have met over the past decade, and the first one in tonight's blog is the first one I met, or at least the first I met when traveling. I was 16. I was on a Team Challenge Expedition to Northern India, and this particular story takes place in the middle of the desert in Rajasthan. We decided to go on a camel trek to watch the sunset in the desert. The man who was leading my camel, whose name i honestly don't think i ever knew, was as softly spoken as Michael Jackson. When we were riding back he sat behind me on the camel and we talked about... something (i don't have my India diary to hand, so i don't know what we talked ... read more

Having successfully battled the Old City of Jaipur the previous day it was time to see what else this interesting place had to offer. Our hotel arranged for us to have a driver for the day, and he was pretty much at our mercy as to what we wanted to do and where we wanted to go. Our first stop would be Amber fort about 11 km from the Old City. Hoping for something a little more elaborate and dare I say more interesting than Jaipur’s city palace, we weren’t disappointed. Amber fort sits on top of a large hill and its presence from the road leading in and looking up is pretty impressive. Once inside, you are also treated to what seems like hundreds of rooms and alleyways in all different directions. Some of the ... read more
