We travelled 402 km to Jaipur through the mountains and beautiful agricultural communities. We endured traffic jams, road construction and, of course, animals wandering on major highways. The haveli where we are staying is like a little oasis in the craziness of a city of 3.2 million people. The setting is surrounded by a mosque, a hari karishna temple and several practicing Hindu families. The owners keep two cows and a calf in the complex for milk and they use the cattle dung to fuel the kitchen (the butane comes directly to the stove via tube). They also use solar boxes to cook vegetables on the roof. Meals of traditional Indian fare are served family-style in the dining room. On our first night, we ran into one of the staff members from Camp Bliss. She was ... read more

Our wake-up call came at 6 am with a ring at the door and the delivery of tea and biscuits. The sun was not up yet, but Kyle set up the computer so that we could stream the game live. He picked up a station out of Buffalo, NY. Despite the terrible internet service in India, we were able to watch the entire game without issue. This was the best internet service we have had the entire trip. Our watch party was punctuated with calls to prayer from the nearby mosque, the ringing of bells from Hindu prayers within the complex and rhythmic prayers from the hari karishna temple next door. It is fair to say they were not the only ones praying this morning! Our watch party meal consisted of black tea, fresh squeezed juice, ... read more

Geo: 26.8616, 75.6958Night #3 of the 5-Day wedding party next door and obviously "Gangnam Style" is still going strong in India ;) Also, did not get much sleep again. We drove on long and winding roads through places back in time until we reached a semi-famous Monkey Temple, which wasn't worth the time. And finally arrived at the famous City of Jaipur! And what did my driver? First thing he does, driving me to a textile shop. Apparently part of the tour (i never signed up for). So I played along so that he got his damn stamp proofing he dropped me off there. Fucking sales people, wasting my time everywhere i go here. I am so sick of it!

In India there is only one traffic rule: there are no traffic rules.”

We landed in India about half eight on 5thOctober and Uncle Nidhi’s driver, Danesh collected us from Delhi airport. Traffic was mental, cars, trucks, bikes, mopeds, motorbikes, rickshaws, tuk tuks all fighting to be first and beeping as they go! When I spoke to the driver about it, he said "This is India!" We were driving from the airport to Uncle Nidhi’s when K’s cousin, Nimmit called us to see if we fancied meeting him and his wife Anku at the pub. Straight from the airport!! Needless to say we went :) We didn’t even freshen up! I was wearing hiking boots!! From the very first moment India was intense! Crazy airport, heaving with people - personal space isn't a given here... guess that's probably a result of the fact that just Delhi has the population ... read more

Planty's version After sadly re-packing our bags having thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Dubai and briefly experiencing how we would be living our lives if we were stupendously wealthy, we headed for the airport. Airports seem to become our second home as of late as in our first 2 weeks of travelling we had visited more airports than the average person does in 2 years. Once again, our airline was Qatar Airways, and those who read my previous blog entry will now how delighted I was to fly with them, although it had occurred to us yet again when we attempted to check-in, that all Qatar Airways check-in staff have the intelligence similar to that of roll of half used toilet paper. We were this time informed that we “need to have ticket home to UK” ... read more

After visiting the Taj, breakfasting and showering, we took a slow 1:30hr drive 40km west down the road to Fatehpur Sikri which was once a fortified city between 1571 and 1585 until the water ran out. The whole of the palace and pavillions are made of red sandstone and was really peaceful. There is a 'green bus' that takes you there from the carpark for 5 rupees which is another pollution control measure. There are much less people visiting here even though it is a world heritage sight. We hopped in and out of the shade and enjoyed looking at the carvings that remain intact amd the scale of the place although it's hard to imagine what it would have been like as a city. We did get a taste of of how life might have ... read more
