We travelled 402 km to Jaipur through the mountains and beautiful agricultural communities. We endured traffic jams, road construction and, of course, animals wandering on major highways.

The haveli where we are staying is like a little oasis in the craziness of a city of 3.2 million people. The setting is surrounded by a mosque, a hari karishna temple and several practicing Hindu families.

The owners keep two cows and a calf in the complex for milk and they use the cattle dung to fuel the kitchen (the butane comes directly to the stove via tube). They also use solar boxes to cook vegetables on the roof.

Meals of traditional Indian fare are served family-style in the dining room. On our first night, we ran into one of the staff members from Camp Bliss. She was in town for business--what a pleasant surprise!

We too loved this drive. We thought Jaipur was the cleanest city we visited in India. Not that this would take much. Didn't you find the Amber fort absolutely breathtaking? N
