*Warning: Images may be considered NSFW.* Another early arrival. We dropped our bags at a little spot recommended by the very nice Keralan couple at Ayur Arogyam, a fabulous - but pricey - ayurvedic massage place recommended by everyone. The hotel was only a spot to rest our heads and not particularly recommended, although staff were helpful. We stayed only for the day. Another train out late this evening to Varanasi. The temples for which Khajuraho is famous for are breathtaking, and it's even more amazing to think that many of them originally arose from a lake, now long gone. Most of the 85 temples - 25 of which now remain - were built between 950 to 1050 CE and remained in use for quite a while afterwards. Khajaraho's isolation helped preserve the temples from the ... read more

We caught the 6pm train from Varanassi to Khajuraho which was meant to take around 11 hours. Again we booked AC3 class. We got on the train and found it was pretty empty so we had the compartment all to ourselves. True to Indian trains we arrived 2 hours late so 7.30am which gave us little longer in bed. We had pre-booked one night accommodation with Hotel Zen, we had 5 nights in Khajuraho but Zen was pretty expensive for 1000 rupees so decided to see what it was like before booking more days and we are glad we did. The room I would say should really of been around 500 rupees with what we have paid before. We did walk around town and found a lot nicer place for only 250 rupees a night so ... read more

Waking on the train feeling a little worse for wear, we headed toward the exit and in search of a rickshaw. We were offered a free lift to a reasonably priced hotel, so we all 5 of us piled into the car along with the driver and his friend. Once on our way and being played some 'light' music by the smooth operator, we were taken to a hotel way out of town to 'just have a look' - refusing we then made our way to hotel Shanti Lodge where we ate breakfast and freshened up for the day. Once ready the four of us headed in a rickshaw to visit the great waterfalls, whilst John opted to ride a rustic old pedal bike the 40km return journey! Chris was also delighted when given the drivers ... read more

Before we left Agra, we were introduced to another traveller called Kat who was a journalist from Poland. She was catching the same train as us so we shared a tuk-tuk to the station. The train journey to Khajuraho was very uncomfortable on AC3. Angelo as usual wozzed out of sleeping on the top bunk as he thought he might roll of the bunk!! On arriving to Khajuraho we decided to stay in Hotel Surya and we shared a tuk-tuk with Kat. On arrival we noticed that this area was not very densely populated as other places in India and also did not look as polluted! This was a great sign! The hotel was reasonably priced, we haggled our room down to Rs 550 (Debbie had a little moan, as she felt she did not haggle ... read more

November 19th We fly from Varanasi to Khajuraho after a stay of just two short days (I will return!)... We land up at the warm and welcoming Harmony Hotel. Saturday sunset finds us at Duladeo Temple, dedicated to Shiva and dating from the early 12th Century CE, though it has been extensively repaired and restored. I'm blown away by the energy in this my first temple and am making connections between this and Kilpeck Church in Herefordshire, dating from the same time period. Could there be a link? November 20th - Full Moon in the anaretic degree Sunday morning early we meet the graceful, pleasant and charismatic Ganga who was Osho's guide back in the day. He gives a discourse on the history and symbolism of the main temple complex, explaining that Osho absorbed this information ... read more

DAY 23 31st January 2011 Awtarsing was there on the dot of 08.30 as he had promised and he picked up rep from the office and drove us to the train station ( avoiding the tractor going around the roundabout the wrong way!!) where we thanked him for the last 13 days driving and said our fond farewells!! The Rep from the office has to make sure that we get on the train ok.....so he duly takes us onto platform 1 and then we wait for the Delhi train which is 20 minutes late due to the fog! Chris decided to have his shoes polished by one of the numerous shoe polishers on the platform, whilst we were waiting - 50 rupees put a smile on the shiners face for the day, its usually only 20 ... read more

DAY 24 1st February 2011 A short 5 minute drive took us to the temples in the centre of Khajuraho. They are laid out in lovely gardens and we wandered from one to the other, our guide filling us in on all the history and architecture. The Hindu temples date from the between the 9th and 10th Century and were built by the Chandela dynasty, who dominated central India at that time. They were abandoned in the 13th century and lay hidden in dense forest for 700 years and were rediscovered by Captain T S Burt from the Bengal Engineers in 1838 and are now a UNESCO World Heritage site. Over 800 sculptures cover the temples depicting gods, goddesses, beasts and warriors, sensuous maidens, dancers, musicians and erotic scenes for which the Temples are most famous. ... read more
