Well, the jury is out on India…one week into the trip here and I have very mixed feelings about the place so far. It’s not like I didn’t know what I was getting into by choosing to come here but wow, more adaptation on my part required. It could be that we’ve been travelling so much in only a few days that there hasn’t been time to sit back and absorb it all. Also, it’s been unseasonably cold, which has been unexpected (there shouldn’t be only a 10 degree temperature difference between Calgary and Delhi – that’s just not right). Another seven weeks will make or break me – the odds are pretty even right now as to which way it might go! January 23… I arrived in Delhi after an uneventful flight from Colombo. The ... read more

Well this will be my last blog for India. Although I may have not written much, the experience has been a lifetime worth of stories. I was going to start this off by bad mouthing everything. Oh, I was so angry. I wanted the time to run fast, to get out of this sh!thole. I finally understood what people mean when they said "every minute you'll be wanting to leave". For me it never was like that, until probably the return from a Camel Safari. And I'll just quickly add here that men were never deisgned for Camels, horses, or donkeys. After a 3 day Safari on a Camel I was walking like a cowboy and my groin felt like it was bleeding. If noone has ever read about India or been, then I think it ... read more

First things first:I made horrible spelling mistakes in my blog yesterday. The name of the Temple is Chaturbhuj and the cenotaphs are the Chhatris. Are you supposed to sleep in Sleeper Class? Because I didn't. The train left Jhansi at 2:30 and reached Kajuraho at 6:30. I maybe managed an hour of sleep (that's 3 times 20 minutes). Indians must be very deep sleepers because I was the only one bothered by the little kid on the lower berth jumping up and down screaming something over and over. The others just kept on snoring. I hope my sleeper class experience tomorrow will be better. I arrived at Khajuraho in a very bad mood. Any wannabe driver/guide/hotel suggestion/restaurant suggestion would have to face my wrath and feel the pain. I decided to blow some steam on a ... read more

The only A/C carriage on the night train from Agra to Khajuraho has 8 foreigners out of maybe 80-something people in the carriage – an unreasonable high proportion, if you think about it. We arrive at 7am, fight our way through rikshas, find the guy sent by our hotel to pick us up, and are driven into the nicest hotel we’ve seen inIndia. For a country with 1 billion people, 19k population of Khajuraho is tiny, the village literally consists of less than 10 roads and still is one of the main tourist attractions of the country because of its Hindu “Kamasutra” and Jain temples. The village feels very calm and quiet after Delhi and Agra, with easy to handle traffic and not-so-insistent vendors. - Look at my souvenir shop sir! - No! - ... read more

KHAJURAHO, MADHYA PRADESH, INDIA. Monday 2 April, 2012. After a good nights sleep in the Taj Hotel we were collected by yet another guide at 8.00 am. Our destination today was the resplendent Hindu temples of Khajuraho. These have been immaculately restored after almost a millennium of neglect and abandonment and are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. These temples are famed for the delicate sensuality, forthright eroticism, and everyday detail of the sculptures that decorate the facades of the temples. They were built between the 10th and 12th centuries AD and have been hailed as the greatest architectural achievement of the Chandella Dynasty. By the 16th century the temples had fallen out of use and were engulfed by the surrounding jungle, until the British 'rediscovered' them in 1838. Although it appears to be fairly accessible ... read more

EntgegenShahid's fester Mei... read more

Khajuraho is famous for its temples, which are about 1,000 years old. They are widely publicised as having erotic sculptures. It was Christmas so we had booked into a nice hotel, The Ramada, which was a bit out of town away from all the noise and just what we wanted. We had a walk around a local market, which was definitely not a tourist market and we found how nice all the people were there. No mobiles with cameras on this market and so the kids were really pleased to have their photo taken, all with smiling faces, which lit up when they saw themselves on the camera screen. They have nothing, but how happy they are. Khajuraho is a pleasant little village, and that is all it is, it’s the temples we have come to ... read more
