Though the title should make it perfectly clear, I'm stating it anyway: There are photos here depicting The Kama Sutra. I'm of the opinion that we're all adults and I'm posting them. It's these carved depictions that draw people to Khajuraho and it's why the area is famous. If you don't like them, don't look. But don't complain and don't say I didn't tell you. A bit of an adventure to get here, to say the least! Our train ride was suppopsed to start at 730 pm, reaching Satna at 630 am. Instead we left at 835pm and arrived.... at 930am. In class 3A. No one seemed to know anything and we nearly missed our train since we couldn't find anyone to help us read our tickets (they tell you which car to get on, and ... read more

After our visits to the southern and eastern temples, our newly acquired 12 yr old tour guide asked if we would like to see the village, where "real people" live. Of course, I wanted to see it, but I also wasn't in the mood to play walking ATM. Our guide assured us that the locals in the old village (vs the new one where our hotel is) relied on farming and not tourism, so we wouldn't be bothered. So we agreed. Besides, we had over an hour left in our 4 hours of tuk tuk service. We set out, deciding we would take no photos. This was mostly due to the fact that we didn't want to have to pay anyone for taking their picture by accident or for photographing their cow, etc. Also, I personally ... read more

Toda la ... read more

Khajuraho is famous for its temples. Have you heard of the kamasutra ? Will the temples here are basically a kamasutra in stone :) numerous carving depict daily live as well as erotic sexual positions. Most tourists walk around looking for the most explicit ones (and so did I). By the way, I bought the original version of the kamasutra text and I did not really enjoy reading it. There is really not much to learn about sex in it. It's more a description of how men and women were courting each other 2000 years ago, making strange nail and teeth marks on each other :) There is a few chapters on how men should seduce women (in a very very old fashioned way) and how women should react when being courted (is that even English ... read more

I am done with my safari and now I am headed back to Khajuraho to catch my flight to Delhi. Now I have an extra day here just so I can see the temples that were built over 1000 years ago. These are very unique temples, there's none like them anywhere else in India. I have to admit that the temples almost don't make sense to me since India is such a repressed country. It's rare to see men and women holding hands in public and yet these temples portray some very erotic scenes. Now let's just clear up a few things... The temple carvings portray everyday life, from war, to celebrations, from the erotic, to the mundane. Out of 800 plus carvings that are on the 24 surviving temples less than 10% are erotic carvings. ... read more

Why does food poisoning always strike just before a long journey?! I was in Gwalior, it was 6.30am, most of the night had been spent running to the squat toilet and I lay pondering the answer to that question whilst trying to decide if there was any way I´d make the bus to Khajuraho. I´d been told it would take 7 hours to get there (allowing for this being India I was guessing maybe 9) along bad roads and whilst the thought of a long bumpy bus trip wasn't particularly appealing I´d seen everything I wanted to and was keen to move on. And so, stuffed with drugs and praying that 7 hours was right (in the end it was nearer 11), I finally hauled myself onto the bus, much to the entertainment of the driver, ... read more

After leaving Bandhavgahr, we drove to the airport Khajuraho. We managed to leave early enough to have a little while to visit the temples. There are 25 temples built over about a 1000 year span of time, and they were "lost" for 1100 years until they were rediscovered (as I recall) by the British building the railroad. The temples celebrate the creation aspect Hinduism. Photos forthcoming... ... read more
