Khaja what...? I'm having real difficultly remembering how to pronounce this one :) We arrived late in the afternoon after a very short flight from Varanasi to our second Taj hotel. This too was very nice with very helpful staff. The evening was spent going to a light show telling stories of some of Khajuraho's ancient temples. Don't bring your video camera (not that it would work) as they do not allow it. Our kind taxi driver from the hotel kindly looked after ours. The story was mostly interesting but the light show was a little dull. We had an early night as the next morning we were up at 5am for a visit to Panna National Park in an open top jeep. Apparently there are tigers here but the most we saw were monkeys, deer ... read more

I managed to wake up at the earliest hour ever today, 4:15AM which is nothing short of a miracle. I had arranged transport to Jhansi with the guesthouse owner's son so that I could catch the 5:30 bus to Khajuraho. The hotel seemed to be doing quite well because his car was one of the best I've seen in India (2006 Honda something... I'm not too good with cars, but you don't see them around too much). We reached the bus station in time for me to grab the last seat and the bus left earlier than planned since we were full. I was sleepy for the first part of the ride. The sun actually rose only an hour after the bus left (about 2 hours after I woke up!!) so it was still way too ... read more

Khajuraho was an absolutely amazing, everything about it was just great, the food was incredible, the temples were beautiful and we were lucky enough to be there for the dance festival. Khajuraho was really the first place that meir and i have been entirely on our own, well that and agra but we were only there for a night. The first day we arrived was a holiday so the western temples were fre to enter. This was excellent because it saved us 250 rps each. And they were breathtaking, we were lucky enough to see them just at sunset and wow (i think i uploaded a picture of them). That night was also the second night of the dance festival. Now this is no small festival, it involves some of the best dancers in india and ... read more

Leaving Bandhavgarh National Park, we took a 6 hour bus ride to Khajuraho. The bus ride gave us another chance to see a lot of towns and villages in the countryside. When I first read about Khajuraho, it said they are famous for erotic temples. I thought it was a typo and should have read exotic temples. But it was not a typo. The temples were built 1000 years ago by a Chandela dynasty. We’re not sure why, but they depict some fairly graphic sex acts. Their isolation in the jungles allowed them to survive through the centuries from the more conservative cultures. Today it is big tourist destination. In the afternoon we were driven in jeeps out to a canyon several miles away to do some hiking. Driving through the villages, we felt like rock ... read more

We couldn't find confirmed ticket to Jhansi for 8.12 train, we traveled by 9.25 train. It reached Jhansi 13.40 hr so we missed the last bus 13.30 for Khajuraho. Then we hired a jeep for 1500 inR. We shared the cost with another friend we met Jaipur. It took 4 hrs including a lunch break on the way. Khajuraho is a relatively calm town. Erotic figures carved on temples impressed us very much. 1000 years ago; hard to understand the religion on erotic perspective. Therefore we publish our photos without any comment. Tomorrow we will go to Satna by jeep and try to catch the night train 19.45 to Varanasi.... read more

After some nighttime soul-searching, I realised that getting annoyed at all the hassle is just going to prove too stressful in the long run. Grinning and bearing it is the only sensible option. My decision was put to the test as soon as I left the hotel in the morning, with a rickshaw-wallah asking if I wanted a lift, but I smiled sweetly and declined with thanks. Most of today was spent with admin, such as a bit of e-mail on an excruciatingly slow connection, and purchasing a train ticket for my onward journey from Bandhavgarh. On my way back to the hotel in the evening, I was met by a guy from the taxi company that had missed out on my custom to Bandhavgarh. He asked what price I had managed to get, and then ... read more

Khajuraho is famous for its erotic sculptures. The temples here were constructed by the Chandela dynasty just before the time that William the Conqueror was moseying over the English Channel, however the place is barely mentioned in Chandela literature. Architecturally, the most impressive temples are in the so-called Western Group, with Eastern and Southern Groups also existing but containing generally lesser erections. Lest the above description proves misleading, it should be noted that the vast majority of the sculptures in these temples are not erotic in nature. There are many examples of hunting, dancing, and feasting sculptures, plus a large number celebrating the male and female form, but only a minority displaying any action. The temples are amazing nonetheless. The detail is astonishing, and to a level exceeding that of the Jain temples I saw in ... read more

Getting a seat on the bus from Jhansi to Khajuraho turned out to be just the sort of palaver I like to avoid. Through a combination of the RG and the Orchha hotel manager, I had been left with the impression that it was possible to reserve a seat on this bus. It actually turned out that even though there are buses that ply this route where you can reserve a seat well in advance, my intended 11AM bus did not have this facility. Only at 10:30AM, when the conductor appeared, was it possible to buy a ticket in advance - when I said I would appreciate some extra legroom, he generously gave me one of the seats at the front. Unfortunately there was already someone in the seat when the bus turned up, and this ... read more

After leaving Varanassi, we had one nights rough camping to head along some very bumpy roads which really did my back in and made for very slow driving at about 10 miles per hour....we eventually made it to the town of Khajuraho and its famous temples. They were created in the Chandella dynasty and have erotic carvings all over the buildings featuring acts from the Karma Sutra.. I've added a few pictures for your amusement! After one night there, we headed off to a small town called Orchha, where we were rough camping again (not the best option with a bad tummy) but it was amoung beautifull cenotaphs. We spent the morning being shown around the palace, then a trip to the doctor for me for some antibiotics (the whole thing including his fees only cost ... read more
