14 fév * "Guangzhou (Canton) : Avoid visiting during Chinese New Year, which sees the largest annual human migration in the world". Lonely Planet * Chinese New Year 2015: 18-19-20 février La nouvelle année chinoise arrive bien vite. "Bus de ... read more

Well this will be the final entry for this trip. I woke up early this morning in hopes of catching the sunrise. I hiked to the top of a peak in hopes of getting a glimpse of the sun. No such luck. It was the same hike I did yesterday, and it is a nice one. I still had some nice views and could enjoy the morning music blasting from the elementary school down below. China, I've got to say, is a noisy place. I was pretty high up, but all the noise reached me unimpeded by buildings, trees, or other obstructions. The car horns, boat motors, music, and voices all reached my observation point. A lot to take in. After the hike I had breakfast at the hostel and then took off. I rode about ... read more

The weather did NOT improve at all as I set off on my ride on Sunday morning. I left the hostel around 10am and into the cold rain. I took precautions to ensure that I stayed completely weatherproof. Waterproof shoes, gaitors, pants, jacket. I was good to go; so I thought. The ride started smoothly enough, heading south out of Guilin. The road was good and the rain was light. After a few kilometers, I got off the main road and was heading into the Karst landscape of the region. I don't know really how to describe the geography of this area. The flat plains are interrupted by tall jagged peaks that seemingly come out of nowhere. I am in deep southern China, perhaps on the same latitude as Miami, so the climate is tropical. That ... read more

Well every journey of however many miles begins with a single step. My step landed in a big puddle as I left my house for the train station this afternoon. Kunming is in the midst of its annual winter storm and I choose this fine occasion to leave the city for a few days. I had spent the morning running errands in a mixture of sleet, rain, and snow. Wind, too, of course. I went to my favorite bike shop and had a chat with my friend that works there while he added a luggage rack and mud guards to my newly acquired mountain bike. A friend of mine had recently gone back home and left me his Giant mountain bike free of charge. I had already installed disk brakes, a new crank set, bottom bracket, ... read more

Hi Loyal followers, So our morning plans were to get up early and head to breakfast, this disappeared when we decided to have a lie in, so breakfast was skipped and we packed to get our pick up to our river Li trip at 8am. Our bus was late (typical) but eventually arrived and we boarded, it was packed and we managed to get the last 2 seats. Once on the train, I managed to get some ladies attention, she lent over and said my son thinks your very handsome and strong (kid was 3 years old), this was the 5th lady in 12 hours to show me attention. (Vick laughed but has been giving me extra attention all day). Our tour guy was a nice guy and was very animated!! When we got there he ... read more

Asia » China » Guangxi » Yangshuo September 17th 2014

We arrived in Yangshuo after a scary bus ride, where the driver seemed intent on overtaking everything, regardless of what was coming the other way, on a very bumpy road. We also discovered that the Chinese way to deal with telephone lines down across the road is the driving equivalent of a scrum to be first to have a man climb on the vehicle to pass them over... Anyway, once here we discovered that the weird-shaped karst scenery is really spectacular. Yangshuo itself is quite touristy, in an oddly Western way (it really doesn't feel like China), but it's surrounded by limestone peaks on either side of the Li river - in our first afternoon we climbed up a couple of them for the view. Today we went cycling, first to moon hill, a mountain with ... read more

We board our Air China flight to Guilin. Remember what Qantas was like 20 years ago when the flight attendants smiled and you got this awesome array of little boxes and a foil covered steaming hot package that you lifted the lid on with great anticipation? Well, this is Air China. We stuff ourselves silly on the copious amounts of food and before we know it, we're touching down over spectacular mountainous peaks and the Guangxi province. We're in for a delightful few days. We cab to our hotel and have fallen from grace. The Guilin Sapphire Hotel was, I'm sure, a gem in its hay day but the overpowering smell of cigarette smoke sends me running back to reception to request a non-smoking room. That's better but still its original condition 1970s glamour. At 50 ... read more

Friends asked me why I never write about those cities I'd come across while search for festival. well...Chinese city....what's the point to write about I would answer. in my mind-set...all the city and town in China are the same, same format and pattern! I always wondered it was for the benefit of the enterprise for building material, standard moulding, standard marble and tiles and standard everything! no wonder you would see the similar structure in similar shape and colour wherever in China! To added salt on wound...same merchants lined up in every city, for 1st rated city would be Nike beside Adidas, Macdonald next to Kentucky. And for 2nd rated town, there would be Anta beside 361 and Mackenji next to Kenteqi! Located at the edge of the city should be for auto spare parts and ... read more
