Hi guys.. This has become much more easier to update with fast internet here in China. Had the most fantastic day today in this beautiful town called Yangshou. Its a backpackers favourite and yes, it is quite touristy but it is gorgeous. We went for a bike ride this morning for 4 hours through the countryside, met some locals and saw ride paddies, peanut trees and then went to this place called Moon hill which was basically a bit mountain climb which nearly killed me.. but it was worth the climb in the end as the view was amazing over the countryside when we got to the top... followed of course by about 5 chinese ladies trying to sell us water, they do this climb twice a day just to sell a bottle of water for ... read more

The Area: Towers of limestone rise through a hanging mist in a mythic setting. Rice fields with workers and buffalo set the scene between these giant towers, studded with small villages . Everything is green and lush, with a very tropical feel. The rock itself is solid and has a range of interesting features, making for a good variation of climbing. Combine this with good food, cheap living in a laid-back town and a group of good people to hang out with, and you have all the ingredients for a good time! The Challenges: Melting begins as soon as you start moving... sweat doesn't drip here, it flows, almost as fast as you can possibly drink! Keeping hydrated here is key, or you can lose much weight (and energy) through sweating. Communication poses another interesting challenge; ... read more

13/05/05 My plan was checking out the Market in ChongHe on the way to LiBo, but there wasn't much minority tribe, only the Shui which I had seen in SanDu market before, so I rode on the same bus further onward. soon you saw brick and stone buildings instead of wooden stilted houses along the way and you know you had left the Miao region behind. LiBo is famous for the Karst formation scenery. actually I was here 2 years ago almost around the same season... hot and humid! and it did stop me from ventured into the karst jungle. it was the same today when I came back again, my t-shirt and underwear was soaked with sweat, suffocating air and sleepy mood, inside the non-information bus station, but in fact all bus stations in this ... read more

Got a plane from Xian and flew to Guilin, before being transferred by bus to Youngshou. We met up with another Gecko's tour, who had seen a little more of the north of the country and Shanghai. Were in Younshou from 3 April, until the 5th. As you can see Youngshou is beautiful and rural. Exactly as you would imagine China to be. The rock formations were fantastic. If I were to return to China I would definetly go here again. Popular to tourists for its rock climbing.... read more

11/04/05 YangShaw is 3 hours away, so I decided to go there looking for good internet places to up load my diary. as a backpacker destination YangShaw should provided this service, and I did find one family guesthouse that provide free internet connection. I knew I will stay there. The Wong's family build this house and turn it into a guesthouse, and it mean family gusthouse to them! but for me... it is just a guesthouse that run by a family, they give you a room and that all! it wasn't my expectation, I was hoping for a living room we all can sit together and talk, a kitchen or small canteen. but doesn't matter, I got what I want here, download some software for my pocket pc, upload my diary and done! and the room ... read more

Flying into Guilin was quite a sight. The mountains were beautiful and it seemed it was the China we had been waiting for. When you imagine China, there are always the thoughts of the gorgeous mountains, rivers, mist, and boats made of bamboo. You imagine something like right out of the art of a traditional Chinese scroll. Well, Guilin is exactly that. You are literally surrounded by mountains for as far as you can see. Our first night we were able to take an optional trip to see a demonstration of Cormorant fishing. These birds have been used for fishing for hundreds of years. Their lifespan can last 25-30 years, and they usually work for the same family their entire lives. Stings are tied around the bird’s necks and they are then tied to the boat. ... read more

I'm now in Yangshou, China - possibly one of the most beautiful places we've been to on the entire trip. It's quite rural, and the main attraction is the limestone karsts - huge rock formations rising up as far as the eye can see. We've spent almost a week here, cycling around the countryside, climbing one of the peaks, taking a river-boat ride, and a trip to see cormorant fishing - very cruel! I've also had a dress and top custom-made for $5 and $3 respectively! Tonight we are taking an overnight bus to Hong Kong. I wonder how it will compare to the train - hopefully people won’t spit on the floor there too! Apart from a few disgusting habits, the Chinese people, contrary to what a lot of travellers say, are in fact very ... read more
