We began our drive to Hazyview (which is where our resort is) around 8:15am, and Janel proceeded to put on the right path right away. To get there, we would have to drive to Nelspruit first (400+ km away), which was one of the host cities in this World Cup. The drive was smooth, but not as exciting as the drive along the coast from Durban to Cape Town. As we drove into Nelspruit, we saw the new stadium right away. I forgot to say that on the way to Nelspruit, I was stopped by a cop for changing lanes when the dividing line was solid. Just as I was about to do so, I hesitated because I could have easily waited another 6 seconds or so to pass the slow-moving truck that was ahead of ... read more

Arrived at the meeting point for the game drive at 6.15 a.m we are getting used to these early starts now. The game drive operator arrived and advised us that 6 of us were on the drive today. At 6.45 no one else arrived. After waiting a suitable length of time we left. Just Roger and I on our own private safari, what luck. My goodness what an experience. Our drive vehicle was big and when we went over rough terrain, we were shaken, definitely not stirred. We saw some of the most wonderful scenes. Elephants, rhino, hippo, giraffes, to name but a few. I really cannot express in words some of the sights we saw. As I have said in earlier posts my camera is not good enough to give a true reflection on what ... read more

this is just a shout out to an anonymous comment left on my blog. a true blog post with photos will come soon, i promise... but what this person said, in my opinion, needs to be read by others...as it is true and the papers here and abroad are saying the same and eating their previous words...fans are so fanatical about S Africa being so wonderful in so many ways and saying how much they want to return!! "Thanks for telling them!! Europeans and Americans are fed on bigoted reports from CNN and BBC, filed by parachute journalists. Here is a quotation from an article written by my friend who's a journalist:. "Like the biblical log in one’s eye, the English and Germans who are hell bent on portraying South Africa as a very dangerous place ... read more

Whew, it's been a little while since the last update. Sorry for the delay, but I'm not wasting much time out here. So we left off when I arrived in Pretoria. The place seemingly looked safe due to the cleanliness and lack of graffiti, but the electric fences outside literally every building was a strong reminder of the realities of South Africa. On top of that, my South African friend Idali -- who was kind enough to pick me up at the airport and drive me into Pretoria -- said that she would never buy a house on the street and would rather live in a complex with a security gate. She also told me a smash-and-grab story when she was driving in Johannesburg once. Hearing things like this makes you keep your guard up more ... read more

Up at 6 o’clock, for an early start, to join the convoy of England supporters, on the 5 hour drive to Bloemfontein. The number of supporters making this trip was enormous. Every car had England colours of some sort, be it car flags, big flags or scarves. Such a sight. The in- frequent service stations were awash with red and white. In Bloemfontein the English had taken over the waterfront. The government had relaxed the selling of alcohol for the day. This was obviously too good an opportunity for the bars etc to miss. In fact the restaurants were drunk dry and couldn’t match the demand. Fortunately Roger and I managed to purchase some beer and sat by the lake to drink it in the sunshine with the other supporters. Again the atmosphere was unbelievable and ... read more

A transit day today. No convoy back to Jo’burg. Just outside Bloemfontein we saw a small aeroplane parked on the side of the road and discovered, when we stopped for breakfast, that it had made an emergency landing, on the motorway, the day before, just after we had passed that area. We have set ourselves a little rule here, that when we go below the half full sign, on the petrol gauge, we fill up. On this occasion we were on the main highway, the N1, we had just over half a tank and decided to fill up at the next station. What a mistake. We got very close to empty and were starting to get worried. Roger then noticed a hand painted sign on the side of a barn type building saying Petrol. We pulled ... read more

Day 13 Got over yesterday pretty quickly - just looking at my Soccer City pics cheered me up. This was the first morning that I didn’t have to do ANYTHING ………….. so I didn’t!!!!! Then met Grace for a nice afternoon coffee (well I had a beer) before heading off to Ellis Park for our best game so far - Brazil v Chile ………. As well as the colourful, vibrant, diverse crowd (I was sat next to a Nigerian); the (at times) good football, and the excellent English officiating (the bald referees’ society had a good day); who could have imagined, only 20 years ago, that Brazil would be playing in the football World Cup at this impressive stadium which to some was a symbol of apartheid. Pete had chatted to an Ethiopian last week whilst ... read more

Day 12 Not a good one ;-(((( Up early again and we spent most of it sat in the truck while the tracker/ ranger tried (and failed) to find something……… then (because Eng came 2nd) we had to bomb it back to J’brg to watch Eng v Ger - enuff said, Fortunately we had tickets to Soccer City for Mex v Arg, and whilst the admin of getting there was a lot after driving back from the Kruger, it was more than worth it - the place is stunning - easily the best stadium I have ever been to, although I was up in the Gods again so the atmosphere was a bit flat - or thinking about it, that was probably just me still sulking about a Uruguayan linesman and not seeing any lions (either ... read more

Here we go again. This time to Bloemfontein. Naively Roger and I assumed England would win everything, unfortunately not the case. We didn't book accommodation taking into account the Team would be runners up in the group. This morning we spent time trying to get somewhere to stay in Bloemfontein, which is about 5 hours drive away from where we currently are. Everywhere is rammed. fortunately one of the guest houses we tried gave us the name of one that she thought had vacancies. Success. We have heard that there is a religious holiday in Bloemfontein on Sunday and beer will not be sold anywhere, They under estimate the English who can find beer like animals find water ha ha We thought the day would be quiet today, but we managed to come across the Italian ... read more

Today we were in transit. We decided not to drive back to Cape Town after a chap told us that a flight was available out of East London, which was about 2 and a half hours away. Roger didn't fancy the long drive to Cape Town even though the route is stunning. Well what can I say, never believe distances told over a drink. This journey took us 4 hours. We disbelieved the Sat Nav and ended up lost. Fortunately we were able to do a U turn on the motorway. We broke every speed limit imaginable. A lorry driver coming in the opposite direction at one point flashed Roger a warning, he was able to reduce speed and sure enough around the bend was a police speed trap. On arriving at East London airport we ... read more
