A 5 hour drive found us back in Johannesburg, and back at the Purple Palms Hostel for 4 nights. It was nice to go back to a place where people knew us. This time we got to sleep in the cool cabin in the back yard. Good thing the electric heater worked well, though it was not as cold as it was when we were here the previous week. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The night we arrived, USA played Ghana in the Round of 16. Italy, one of the 3 main teams I was rooting for, was already knocked out of the tournament. So, I was left with only USA and Brasil. We did not go to the game in Rustenberg, but instead decided to watch it at the Fan Fest in Sandton. They ... read more

Went off to the Cradle of Human Kind today. This is a world heritage site and contains the Sterkfontein Caves, which we visited. A 2.3 million year old fossil, Mrs Ples, was found here in 1947. Other fossils over 3 million years old have also been found. What I didn't bargain for was the fact that I would be on my hands, knees and bum getting through some of the narrow and low gaps in order to complete the tour. Oh my lord, what was going on. I was frightened to touch the walls, for support, in case I touched a bat!!!!! It was very interesting but I was glad to get out in the daylight again. We had lunch around the lake at Centurion. As I have previously said, to eat out is very cheap ... read more

We’re not going home, we’re not going, we’re not going, we’re not going home. What a day. Today was unreal. We started the day with a walk along the beach front and just happened to bump into Ray Clements who insisted on having his photo taken with Roger. We passed the Team hotel again and had our photo taken with their coach in the background. That’s as close to the Team that we got. Ha Ha. After that drinking all the way. We cannot believe how good the weather has been. We settled for a nice bar on the waterfront. It is unbelievable the amount of effort supporters’ put into their dressing up for the England matches. We have seen the Capello boys, Knights of St George, one even was sat astride a panto horse and ... read more

Geo: -26.1951, 28.0339So I arrived in Johannesburg just for the one night at the Ritz Backpackers.I arrived 9pm on the Friday night, for pickup by ACACIA at 5am the following morning.Everything went relatively smoothly. The Backpackers itself was simple, with humerously exposed showers, but all in all good enough for somewhere to spend the night.... read more

Well, Bafana is out of the tournament. they played well and tied with Mexico AND beat France. Most skeptics said they would fail horribly.. I am proud of them. I am also very proud of the support I have seen here amongst South Africans of all walks of life. The positive vibe here is electric. I am excited for the US and how they have been playing. We shall have to wait and see how the rest of the World Cup unfolds. I still have yet to get to any games sadly, although a few opportunities have presented themselves- I will not go if Elisha cannot go and that is how it has been due to work schedules. I still have photos to upload, just waiting a bit to get more photos and do a large ... read more

Sorry for the short delay in posts, my BB was unable to send or receive emails for a few days. Well, we are nearly three weeks into the trip which is crazy. As with every trip, there are moments when you do start to get exhausted and miss your normal life in some way. This has already ranked up there as one of the best trips ever. Africa is more unique and far different than I couldve even imagined. You have seen and heard from me all of the little things that have been interesting and unique, and they continue to grow by the day. But on the same token, I am starting to feel the end of the trip and in some strange ways... I am ready for my own space, not living out of ... read more

It is like being in a shopping mall when you are sitting in the stadium watching a game at the 2010 FIFA World Cup. You don’t know what the time is. It happened two games now, there are two small big screens but you can’t see anything. I am forced to squint to get an idea of how long to go. This time I didn’t want time to be over as Australia were all over the charmed tournament team Gharnia Forutus. If you were to ask me the question before I left Australia; “If in the first two games your two best players ever to be produced in your country will be sent off would you go?” I’d have to think about it very hard. The second game was in Rustenburg a city (?) in the ... read more

South Africa. Big city. Nice hotel. Family. World Cup. Happy Victoria ! I arrived in Johannesburg late Sunday night to a warm, full family welcome at the airport. Had the longest, hottest (for the first time since I’ve been away) shower and curled up in a warm, comfortable bed. Some very much appreciated luxuries ! After a relaxed full breakfast with the family, we began our exploration of Johannesburg. The area we are staying in, Melville, is apparently one of the chicest suburbs in Jo’burg, the streets lined with beautiful houses, artful shops and trendy cafes. Spent the morning wandering and discovering that not all of the city is as threatening as its reputation of being one of the most dangerous cities in the world makes it out to be. The darker underside of high crime ... read more

Well tonight is our last night in Johannesburg at the Ball and Kicka Soccar Fan Village. Laura and I got a much smaller more private room tonight sharing with just one other couple instead of the usual 16 in two rooms. So this will be nice. In a bit we are heading to Melville, a nice area of Joburg to watch the last football match of the day. So the last few days have been some of the most fun while here in Johannesburg so I'll get right to it. APARTEID MUSEUM: Really I think people would have to just go for themselves but it really lies out a the history of South Africa from the arrival of the Boers (Dutch) to the arrival of the British and both of their interactions with the local people ... read more

Ok, quick update on my World Cup jolly to date... - Staying in Soweto, the biggest township in the world - Witnessed 2 muggings already. One late at night on another train platform and another in broad daylight in the local shopping centre. - I carry little of value when walking but mainly get organised taxis everywhere - One shooting occurred less than 500m from my tent last night - Peeps are okish but don't really trust le crazy white folk - Basically don't leave the backpackers unless we go to a game which we get to by organised bus. Fed and watered there and they have cable for all games. - Prolly the most unsettling place I've ever been. - The combined roughness of Grangetown, Moss Side, Aston, Toxteth, Tower Hamlets, Devonport, Maroubra and Dee ... read more
