Sorry for the delays in posting some details. Like Europe, I will be typing all blogs from my BB. However, unlike my past trips to first world countries, South Africa (while being quite modern) has sparse internet access and some on and off cell service - but more on that later. Sorry for the delays... But the first few blogs will be posted at the once and incrementally thereafter. As of today, June 7, Heather is still alive. And we're off... We finally made it! 50+ hours and 3 continents later we arrived in South Africa. Both of our bags weighed in at 14.2 kg, which is only about 30 lbs for 3.5 weeks. We also realized this is the first time that either of us have been south of the equator. My trip started at ... read more

It has been awhile... times have been quite hectic lately- World Cup is basically here and it shows... people swamping into the hostel- of all cultures and types... miscommunication is rampant as no one here speaks Korean and I speak more Spanish than anyone- and that is basically nothing!! But things are good... watching some great games lately, meeting interesting people- and of course we get the ones that - well- are less desirable... I do not understand why some people travel, they just want to feel like they are still at home, why not just stay at home and give us less of a headache?? I will have photos soon of our trip to the Lion Park ( and feeding the giraffes)- plus last night we went to see Die Radio Kalahari Orkes, my favourite ... read more

Hello! I am finally getting a chance to blog a bit. We are going to Botswana later today. Johannesburg has had its ups and downs. Since it is approaching the winter solstice here the days are very short and white tourists are not allowed at night due to the high level of violence. It is not a law but a strong recommendation. In fact the other night Laura and I were in downtown Johannesburg and it got dark really fast by about 530pm when we couldnt figure out what taxi was a one going in our direction. You cant tell the taxi driver where you want to go, he tells you where he is going! There are 15 people per taxi and it costs just about 1 dollar and after you get in, the person sitting ... read more

I arrived in Johannesburg just after 4pm local time and as I got off the plane I noticed changes immediately, all the airport security police were black Africans, in fact all through passport control etc., I didn't see one white person working at the airport. I was also amazed just how easy it was to enter the country; no documentation to complete, just a quick stamp in the passport, collect bags, and out, no searches, bio security etc. I was met by some old friends I first met when I lived in Jo'burg. it was great to catch up with them. I stayed with them for 3 nights, they were generous and gracious hosts, they drove me around to show me some of the places I had once lived, worked and hung out. I recognized nothing, ... read more

At breakfast we again see Sudi and are almost running late to meet Roman to get on our way to the airport as we are talking again! Such a nice guy! EVENTUALLY WE WILL GET TO THE AIRPORT Roman is such a popular and well respected guy in the towns that when we drive through them, there are lots of stops for him to say hello and have a chat to so and so and this person and that person. Unfortunately for us, every time he steps out of the car we get swamped by every person in town who has something to sell, I even get another trade for a koala bear offer but this time decline. We check with the souvenir guys for my flag but they were only able to get a smaller ... read more

" The kick off Concert in Jo'Burg & Australia v's Germany in Durban" Tuesday/Wednesday (8-9/6/10) Excited, nervous, perhaps slightly scared especially if you’d read anything published in the English media in the six weeks prior to the World Cup. We finalized the last of our packing and odd jobs jumping into the taxi bound for Heathrow at 10.30am. Vicky met us at the airport to return Jez’s jacket lost whilst at Hartley Whitney, a coffee and it was time to head to the gate. With a short shop over in Lisbon we arrived in Johannesburg early the next morning to a bussling airport full of soccer fanatics. We collected our tickets seamlessly and Rob our airport pickup arrived and took us to Shoestring Backpackers. After breaky we retreated for a few more hours sleep. We ... read more

On any trip abroad that involves flying, the first contact with the new culture usually occurs at the airport, if not somewhere in the imagery of the mind. Ours was the last flight out of Munich airport. Once I came to the departure gate, I began to notice an undertone that would follow me throughout the next month in South Africa, the one of race. A predominantly senior crowd of Europeans gathered at the gate ready to board, greeted by an entirely African cabin crew. Once I was seated, the flight video portrayed a stout man with Teutonic spectacles boarding before a towering rotund black man, who clumsily placed his briefcase in the overhead compartment causing another one to fall out on the white man's head. Opening the in-flight magazine entitled Sawubona (a Nguni word ... read more

The Beggining. Today Fabio Capello picked his 23 players. Whether we agree with his choices or not we must all get behind our Team and support them all the way. In our case it's all the way to South Africa!!!!! Roger and I depart the UK on 11th June to start our adventure. We fly into Johannesburg and there the fun will begin. It is my intention to post daily what we are doing, what has happened, what the atmosphere is like and what the World Cup fever is all about. We have tickets through to the Semi- Final, fingers crossed we get that far, but will be home for the Final. We could have got Final tickets, but made the decision early on that we would rather be back in England to watch England beat ... read more

We struggled to wake up as early as we had to... 4 am. we didn't hit the bed until midnight, I was not very tired... maybe excitement, plus it had been a hectic day at the hostel... we got ready, grabbed our bags and lumbered, ungracefully into the reception... said good morning to Moe, he looked tired as well.. having worked the 3rd shift. The rest of the group going to Kruger with us came into the room, everyone looked half awake- understandably so. The driver was surprisingly awake, I guess driving all night and drinking coffee will do that for some... We passed familar places around Joburg, watching the minibuses speed by and catching glimpses of the Gautrain construction zones... the streets were chaos, people heading into offices... we inched down the road, until finally ... read more
