Only being in Jo'berg for 2 days I experienced a lot about the history of South Africa and how the Apartheid happened. The Apartheid Museum was very good and provided a ton of information on the history of South Africa. If you are interested about the history you can read more facts about it below. I also visited Soweto which was a large township in the world. This tour basically just consisted of driving around and see things. We only got out of the car a few times. To see the hospital, which is the largest in the world. He showed us the original hostels that the miners worked in, that still have no running water or electricity. He also showed us where he grew up which I think is a nice touch. Some interesting things ... read more

After the trials of actually getting to a hostel yesterday I wasn't in the mood for leaping out of bed at 7am for sightseeing and so my last day in South Africa passed rather quietly. I braved the weird bathroom set up, shower in one room, toilet in the next, sink on the outside wall! I went for breakfast in the kitchen area. I really like this new hostel - it's designed to look like a castle and it was quite novel to run down the steps from the battlements to the kitchen! I made myself breakfast and watched in bemusement as a very skinny couple got through 16 slices of eggy bread rolled in sugar between them! I relaxed around my room for most of the morning and then decided to walk to the shops ... read more

Day 26 - Jo'burg (South Africa) - 24/8/09 Woke up this morning in Damien's room knowing that it would be a very emotional day as everybody who I had been travelling with for the last 3 weeks would be heading off to Jo'burg or to Cape Town whilst I was flying down to Jo'burg to start my 5 weeks independent adventure. Everybody was waking up and I wondered over to the Anna's tent to find out what had happened to Juliette. It turns out that she had stayed out all night and still wasn’t back, I helped Anna take her tent down. Everybody was at breakfast and I managed to sneak my last breakfast on the truck (thanks Robin!), eggs on toast. When it was time for everybody to go, it was a time for tears ... read more

I awoke several times during the "night". The seating on board was quite cramped-- thank goodness the plane was only 2/3 full! My deep massage made my back quite sore (or maybe that was the seat!). Anyway, the flight was long, the food was OK, and when we finally touched down in Johannesburg an hour late, we were both quite relieved. Passport control was empty--just our flight, so we whizzed through in about 10 minutes, breezed through customs, and walked into the wating arms of Mom's cousin, Isolde. She was a "surprise" for Mom, who was thrilled! I was a little preturbed that Vodacom had no record of my cell phone rental request, but since I had copies of my emails with me, they sorted things out. The phone is taking some getting used to, but ... read more

I decided to spend the day exploring a bit more of Johannesburg. Although I love the South African countryside and animals I felt I should learn something of the history of the country. I booked a tour that would cover the city centre, the Apartheid Museum and Soweto. Johannesburg is a large city covering more than 2,500 km sq. It was founded after the discovery of gold in the area by Australian prospector George Harrison in 1886. Thousands of diggers rushed to the area and those who had the wealth to finance underground mines did so on a large scale. By 1889 Johannesburg was the largest city in South Africa, and the most multicultural, with white and black fortune seekers alike being drawn by the promise of gold. These fortune seekers were treated with mistrust by ... read more

This morning i had my first tea with milk and rusks, which I will be mainly having for breakfast for the upcoming 7 weeks. Rusks are like breadcrumbs, very dry and not a lot of taste, but you can really appreciate them on those early and chilly mornings in the bush together with tea, which I normally do not drink, but here it is just not natural to drink coffee. And honestly, if you dont think about it it just looks like a very light caffee au lait, maybe even a bit better? Food will definitly not be my first priority here (maybe for the reason that i will have to cook my own food at the camp??) :), Will have to see how it is organised, maybe will take turns with others, its so much ... read more

Finally arrived in Joburg today morning. The weather is not what I expected (ok here I had some expectations...), 8 degrees during the day and minus during night! A bit dramatizing though as Joburg lies on high altitude its always colder here. Met a nice couple on the plane, around 60s, the lady started the conversation that she always has to sit in the middle as he has a husband (3 seats together on plane)... well looking at her husband i would also not fight to sit on the side :), was a huge man...I proposed to sit in the middle if she wants to sit in the middle once in her life, but she resisted...:) Ok, they were a nice couple, the lady telling about all their travels and stories about her husband...that he carries ... read more

I set off for Africa yesterday. I got through Heathrow fairly quickly although take off was slightly delayed. Our pilot was a very cheerful chap who chatted away to us over the loud speakers and gave us what was a cross between a guided tour and a weather report... 'now as we take off into the dark cloud ahead you'll be able to see Heathrow's new terminal 5...' As we finally took off and began the long flight to South Africa he kept it up... 'and to your left you'll see cloud and on our right is, well, more cloud, and rain, we're just surrounded by cloud now.' Eventually he gave up and moved onto the safety instructions including the rather humourous 'for safety reasons we do not recommend sleeping in the aisles'! The flight was ... read more

I am extrmeley excited for this adventure that I will embark on in about a month. I am trying to make as many connection as possible before I go. There are so many questions in my head as to where this research will take me. What path am I headed on? Will this information help anyone, or will it, like countless other research results, end up being filed away. It is up to me to follow through and make sure that this becomes a success....it won't kill me...it will only make me stronger....... read more

Finally, I have my ticket out of Johannesburg airport! When I leave I will have been here for about 50 hours. You have no idea how long 24 hours is, in this situation! Its a long time, the hours go by soooo slooow. The first overnight there were no rooms in the transfer hotel, the second night, I was lucky and there were some available at the Protea Hotel at the Jberg airport. For 196USD, 18 hours. Of course as soon as she said that my mind was processing $198... for 18 hours... $198 for the room, with a shower, oh I so wanted a shower... $198... USD...18 hours... You know what I did already don't you? I walked out mentally preparing myself for another overnighter with no real sleep on my now trusty 4 seater ... read more
