Don't believe a single word of the previous journal. It's a total lie but it's probably what most people think is reality in Soweto. It's actually great. Staying at one of the best backpackers I have ever been to. Locals are fantastic. They have a real passion for life. We've had numerous lifts from locals, been helped everywhere we've been. I've already been asked a number of times by the local homies to tell everyone how great Soweto, Jo'burg and South Africa is. So...COME TO SOWETO, JO'BURG AND SOUTH AFRICA...IT'S GREAT!! Yes, it is a little dodgy at night but you act the same as you would wherever you go. So, so far I've done: - got tout tickets for Argentina v Korea for $30 :) - got tout tickets for USA v Slovenia for $20 ... read more

As all seven of us had lived in South Korea, this was a game we had been looking forward to. Argentina is in outstanding form and the coach, Maradonna, is almost as fun to watch as the team. Meanwhile, the South Koreans don't have anywhere near the skill and depth of the Argentineans, but make up for that in fitness and speed. It was bound to be a great game. Mark, the sole American in the group, drove us all down to a local station, from whence we were to get the train to the game. We consisted of two Canadians, an Australian, a Welsh, a Filipina, and a Dane. Having all developed a love-hate relationship with Korea, we really wanted Korea to win... or get trounced. Only a draw would be unsatisfying., On arrival at ... read more

The Lion Park Yes, I know, you can go to lion parks anywhere. In fact my parents took me to a couple in Australia when I was a kid. But this is different. This is seeing lions caged in their natural African habitat instead of caged in an Australian habitat. As corny as this is, it was good fun. We got to play with the cubs and see some albino lions (which I didn't even know existed). There were also a few bored giraffes, springbok, zebra, meercats, and dogs to see -- just like any other zoo. The best part was driving through the lion enclosures. We had fun leaning out of the car to take pictures and then getting our limbs inside the car and closing the windows before one of the young lions took ... read more

Hello, Well its been about a week since my last post. We have been back in Johannesburg for a few days now. I am at a public terminal now so no pix for now but I will post them later to this blog. So we spent about a week outside of Mokolodi Nature reserve at a backpackers campground. We had a hut for a few nights and a tent for the others. I loved that in the evening the servants bring a plastic waterbottle filled with hot water for us to put at the end of our beds. It warms your feet during the cold nights which are just above freezing by the way. I didnt think it would be so cold here. We are bundled up anyhow. After a few rest days at the camp ... read more

The Denmark vs Holland game received much publicity as newspapers in both countries have been very irreverent to Islam's Mohammad. Naturally, that meant more people heading there and a higher profile. There were seven of us going to this game. Only four of us had tickets, while the other three negotiated with scalpers to get better tickets than us at lower prices. Once again, FIFA efficiency at work. They should all be taken out the back and shot. I've already sent an email to Ossama with the suggestion. Speaking of Bin Laden, Al Qaeda had already stated that this game would be a target because of the cartoons in Dutch and Danish newspapers. Or maybe just the Danish newspapers and these guys can't tell the difference between Danish and Dutch. Such simpletons. Just shoot the ... read more

Tuesday 15th June Breakfast at DKW is like a League of Nations convention. There are the Boys from Brazil, Argentineans, English and Germans. Everything is very civilised and we all wish each other good luck, through gritted teeth. A dose of culture today. We took a drive into Pretoria and visited the Voortrekker Monument which is the biggest Monument in Africa. This monument was designed to commemorate the Vortrekkers , who were a large group of the forefathers of the Afrikaner people who demonstrated their discontent with the British authorities in the Cape by leaving the colony permanently. They travelled deep into the interior of Southern Africa between 1834 -54. This was known as The Great Trek. O.K history lesson over. Later in the day we went to a Fan Fest and watched the match between ... read more

After an overnight flight from Cairo, we arrived to the country where we would spend the next 3 weeks - South Africa, my 30th country. My dad had hyped up the World Cup for almost a year, so it was great to finally arrive. I was supporting 3 teams....USA for my daddy, Brasil for my mommy, and Italy, because that is where I was born. Besides soccer, we were going to see lots of wildlife as well, so I was really excited. After picking up the tickets to our 5 matches at the airport, daddy picked up our rental car. It was kinda strange as he was driving on the opposite side of the car. We stayed at the Purple Palms hostel in Kempton Park, outside of Johannesburg, which was really close to the airport. I ... read more

Just before I left Bangkok, I checked the weather in South Africa. It had occurred to me momentarily that this was in the southern hemisphere and that some countries down there experienced winter. Sure enough, it's winter. So I managed to pack my only jacket, all three pairs of socks, and bought a pair of pants. Done. Three hours to Hong kong, 12 hour layover for banking, eating and drinking, twelve hour flight to Johannesburg and I'm there at 6:20am. It was only after arriving at the airport that I realized that this is going to be a city gone mad. After passing through immigration I got my first hint. A guy was walking around blowing a vuvuzela -- the plastic metre-long trumpet things that have made this the world's noisiest World Cup. These things are ... read more

Monday 14th June Today we went to Soccer City in Jo’Burg, to watch the match between Holland and Denmark. We actually got to our destination without getting lost, but we did have the added assistance of the Sat Nav download. Park and Ride is the “done” thing here, if you are driving. We have been hearing some horror stories about the delays and queues people are experiencing. An English chap, staying in DKW with us, along with 30 others had to hijack a bus and driver in order to get back to Rustenburg on Saturday, after a 2 hour wait for one to appear. He feels badly scarred by the Park and Ride experience. We seem to be having a lot more luck as we are getting away from venues without delay. I know, don’t speak too ... read more

Woke up still disappointed from the result of last night and also wondering if Nick and Raphael got back to Jo'Burg ok. We still can't believe that goal. It was like watching something in slow motion. It seems as if all Capello's gambles aren't paying off.Still, enough of that. Gotta think positive. Today we went to the SA Lion Park. This place should be about 26 minutes from where we are staying, but true to form we got lost and it ended up taking us nearly an hour. Due to our lack of navigation skills we missed the 11.30 tour we had been booked on but fortunately we were rescheduled for the 1.30 trip.In the mean time we took the opportunity to go in the lion cub enclosure and also feed the giraffes and ostrich's. Back ... read more
