Geo: -26.1538, 28.0389This afternoon Paul, Jen and I went to the Montecasino Bird Park. I'm not that interested in birds and didn't know what to expect. When we arrived we choose to go through the Lorikeet Aviary first. In here there were lots of friendly lorikeets that we could feed nectar to. The birds would sit on our hands and eat the nectar. It was a bit ticklish when they stood on my head. One of them even licked sweat from my forehead! This was such a weird feeling! These birds were so colourful. After the Lorikeet Aviary we came across some of the larger birds here; storks, flamingos, pelicans and cranes. It was now 3pm so we headed to the amphitheatre for the Flight of Fantasy Show. During the next half hour we were entertained with ... read more

This may be slightly pre-mature, 4 months to be exact but mental preparation takes a lot longer than one may think. In March next year, this twenty something lady will leave home and head North Easterly towards the land of colour.... India. I have managed to organise myself a job in Dehli. Details of which I have no idea but one fundemental aspect is that I get to work for a month, travel for a month and so on in that exact order. That to me, is the most ideal job offer one can get (note: money does not motivate me) no matter what kind of work they ask me to do.... well to an extent I suppose. RTW trips often take 12 months or more of preparation. Saving money, selling possessions, saving more money. I, ... read more

Geo: -26.153, 27.8657This morning I met Paul's friend Lindin, who came over for a visit. We were all called outside by Paul's parents to see something strange. It was called a 'sundog'. It looked like a double round rainbow that went around the sun. It was an amazing sight. I had never seen one before. At first the rainbow colours were quite bright and then it slowly faded. We had a look on the internet and the TV. The news reports were calling it an infrequent phenomenon. It was only visible in Johannesburg. People who were interviewed on the TV gave a variety of responses to their interpretation of its appearance. The three of us then went for a drive to one of the ponds in the estate. Here we saw water lilies, many tadpoles, Red ... read more

Geo: -26.153, 27.8657Early this morning we went back to the botanical gardens. Firstly we stopped at the hide. From here we saw quite a few Red Bishops that were mostly puffing their feathers out. There were also Masked Weavers flying about. Half an hour later we left the hide and went for a walk in the direction of the waterfall. We walked through the picturesque gardens. This morning I was on the lookout for the giant tortoises that I saw yesterday. I then spotted a pair. One was slightly smaller than the other one. I followed them as they slowly walked away from me. I decided to walk away from them. In the little pond I spotted some frogs and a terrapin swimming around, its head popped out among the moss. I took some time to photograph ... read more

Geo: -26.153, 27.8657We have now been in South Africa for a few days. The weather has been gorgeous! I have enjoyed the consistent, warmth and can only imagine how much warmer it will be in summer. An observation that I have made is that they don't have daylight savings here, which seems strange to me that it is dark so early in the evening and it is summer. Next to the estate there is the Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens. Paul and I decided to spend some time there this afternoon. It was only a few minute drive to the gate. Being residents to the estate, we had our own key and did not have to pay an entrance fee, unlike other visitors have to.Our first stop was at the hide. We stayed here for a while ... read more

Geo: -26.1538, 28.0389Wow, after many years I am finally leaving London. It has now been 4 and a half years since I left Australia for my overseas experience which was meant to last a year! I have loved my time in London. Having virtually known no one when I arrived, I am now leaving many great, true friends and colleagues. It has been a great experience- professionally and personally. With Europe on my doorstep- it made up for the horrible English weather. Fortunately being a school teacher I had frequent opportunities to travel around and made the most of the school holidays. In the end I have been lucky enough to visit over thirty countries, experience various cultures, explore historical sites and take way too many photographs! I was more than ready to leave London, even ... read more
