I had been excited and nervous about coming to South America for a month on my own. Mostly, I wanted to expand on my Spanish, but also to try something completely different. And for the first time, I was doing a long term trip on my own with no one that I was planning to meet at any time. So, yes, this is a first. I was nervous. And my dad did not help my nerves. First things first: Dad drove me to Syracuse airport to catch my flight to Atlanta then Lima. Full on, lake effect snow storm. I was a bit worried our flight would be delayed or cancelled, but if anywhere is normal in such conditions, it's Syracuse (take that NYC!). I did make my dad drop me off though so that he ... read more

It is my first night here. I’m staying at the Kokopelli hostel. Minus the heavy smell of feet and the drunkards right outside the window, who find it necessary to scream in unison every single time they take a swig, its pretty alright. I think I’m starting to feel a little queasy from the altitude, but maybe its all in my head. Actually…it is all in my head because we definitely passed ocean to get to this hostel. It was smart on my end to arrange airport pickup and drop off from hostel. I would have been too exhausted to find other means of transportation. My flight arrival was an hour delayed, so I was greeted by a bunch of eye-rolls from the driver. Just got here and I’m already making friends, yay! It might be ... read more

Well we finally made it to Lima Peru. After a one day layover we had an LA where we were able to spend some quality time with our friend Celina. And her beautiful son Noah. We arrived in Lima in the middle of the night and with my rusty Spanish as quickly as for the are taxi driver to drop it off at the grocery for a little bit of water and guess what I got all the water I can handle. He drove us near the Pacific Ocean and said hey, there's your water! So I was thoroughly chastened and ready to get better at my Spanish speaking skills. This morning we started out strong after a fitful night of rest not much sleep going into the day but we had a fantastic day. After ... read more

Geo: -12.1229, -77.0267Today we had a drive around a couple of city districts. Included an interesting look at the Catacombs of the Church of St Francis (sadly, no photos) and the fascinating Larco Museum of Peruvian, pre-Columbian art.In three underground levels the Catacombs were used as Limas's cemetery for 250 years from 1540. 70,000 bodies were buried there until a regular cemetery was established. After a few years of organisation and restoration, the Catacombs were opened to the public in 1947. It was a welcome change from looking at ornate churches, and it was well worthwhile creeping through narrow, dimly lit corridors. Apparently there was an extensive 16thC network of tunnels under the city; it's uncertain how much of this network is still accessible. After a brief rest in our hotel we ventured forth for more exploring ... read more

Asi do centra dělají výlety spíše místní, ... read more

No asi to tady bude normální, cyklistů jsme potkali jen pár a v 10 miliónovém ... read more

Strach, že zaspím byl nakonec zbytečný. Začala mi cestovní horečka a každou hodinu jsem kontroloval budík, jestli není pozdě. Cesta do Amsterodamu proběhla bez většího vzrušení. Mluvili ... read more

Distance driven today: 2miles/3km test ride Cumulative distance driven: 10,915 miles / 17,566 km Today’s trip: Hotel garage, around a few blocks and back to the garage Funny thing happened earlier today. I went down to the hotel garage this afternoon, to remove the panniers (the aluminum boxes on the side) to prepare the bike for the tow truck that will come in the morning to take it to the dealership. I decided to try one last time to start the motorcycle; even though I had tried several times yesterday unsuccessfully. The electronics malfunction had persisted all day yesterday, and there was really no reason to believe that anything would have changed overnight. Imagine my surprise when I turned the ignition key and all systems and engine pre-check icons showed up on the display, and the ... read more

Distance driven today: 30km/19miles - in a tow truck! Cumulative distance driven: 10,915 miles / 17,566 km Today’s trip: From Lima’s Nana suburb where the bike suddenly died to our hotel As we were returning yesterday late afternoon from our ride on the world’s highest railway and road, it happened. We were driving into one of the Lima suburbs, looking forward to getting to our hotel after a very long day, when the engine suddenly died. All attempts to restart it yielded no result. It was 6pm by that time, and Zoe and I had already been on the road for the last 10 hours, and we wanted nothing more than to arrive at our hotel in Lima, take a shower and crash out in our beds. The plan was to leave Lima early today, and ... read more

Hello Bloggers, I woke up with a little hangover this morning, WARNING: watch out for those Pisco sours!!! Vick looked after me in the night walking me to the toilet after I apparently tried weeing in the middle of the dorm!!! We had our free breakfast; it was poor just bread and jam with coffee and tea. We planned with a girl from our dorm and one of the American lads I was drinking with the night before to go to the Lima art museum, which was opposite the hostel. It was ok only 4 soles with a student card and it had a lot of Nazca and Peruvian artifacts but was mostly in Spanish so hard to understand things, still worth going. We left the other two and got on the number 302 bus to ... read more
