Hi folks, in the imortal words of Sir Ed, we knocked the bastard off. We reached 4607 metres as the altitude meter shows. But firstly where have we been, from lapaz we went to Puno. While at Puno we managed to meet Robyn several times, she has a good group with her and while she had dinner with her parents she made sure that she did not loose contact with the group as they were going out partying. Robyn is good and having a ball, as are all the CRIPTS. We have all suffered with a variety of ailments and likely all altitude related, the ´runs´have been common but short lived, Sheena has perhaps been the most affected after reaching the high pass, but all are well now albeit sporting the odd blister, bruise and sore ... read more

Cusco, Cusco, Cusco... I had heard so much about Cusco prior to my trip, but still didnt (sorry, the apostrophe key isnt working on this keyboard... Spanish keyboards take a while to get used to...) have a solid idea of what to expect when I got here. I knew it was the old capital of the Incan Empire, that the Spanish colonized it heavily, and that it was a major tourist destination. All of those proved to be true. It is a lovely town with numerous plazas all around the city. There are tiny out of the way plazas such as San Blas with small winding streets and larger ones with fountains and great cafes like Plaza Regocijo and San Francisco. The large Plaza de Aramas is one of the nicest city squares Ive ever seen. ... read more

Cusco - United nations of gringos (meaning hassle me on the streets then charge me double)Is it just us or are our blogs getting longer? well then, it must just be you.....we spent an agonising night at lima airport during our transfer to cusco and following the 'night from hell´we arrived in town very sore, sleepy and swollen due to altitude (3500m above sea level!). but Cusco is not the type of city where you play 'lay down sally'....after the initial 24 hours, we acclimatised to the altitude (although our bodies were still auditioning for the wind section of a brass band) and immersed ourselves into the gringo culture that defines this town. We still however managed to pay heed to the well preserved peruvian way of life that includes colourful local outfits, long braids, sundried ... read more

Peru Bound I have offically begun the journey from ATL to Miami, to Lima, and finally Cusco high in the Andes Mountains. (11,000ft) All I know currently is I am living with a mom and daughter for a month while I take classes to become certified to teach English. From there it's off to find a job. I will further update this upon arrival....... (Made it through the Atl airport, and on to Miami, which was shockingly uncrowded. Come to find out, all LAN flights had been cancelled since earlier tonight. First reaction after waiting in line and watching the faces of Peruvians for 15minutes as they waited on answers, was "you've got to be kidding me". Slight over reaction I suppose. Afterall, LAN did put me up in a swanky Wyndham Hotel (no motel in ... read more

After another scenic bus ride along the shores of the never ending Lake Titicaca (apparently the lake is the same size as Holland) we arrived in Cusco, the 'belly button' of the Inca Empire. After a disappointing start to Peru in Puno, Cusco was not only aesthetically pleasing but also full of charm and culture. The main square, or Plaza was huge with a European style cathedral towering over it, all lit up at night time it looked beautiful. There were many other Plaza's in the city each with their own churches which were built in colonial times when the Spanish first conquered the city in the late 1500's. There are still remnants of the Inca's in the city centre, one of the most famous being a wall which runs along the outside of an old ... read more

Cusco is a truely schizophrenic fusion. The Incan empire built itself on the technological and territorial foundations from a number of cultures, and built an empire from the humble beginnings of the Cusco valley. When the Spanish tore down the impressive temples and buildings, to erect constructions worshipping Christianity and colonial 'progress', they were not silly enough to do away with the remarkable earthquake-proof foundations of massive interlocked stone blocks, from craftmanship that was lost forever. Add the modern scourge of traffic, blaring horns and braving blind corners, and the modern city of Cusco is quite an experience of a layered time machine. Narrow streets, with elegant colonial balconies, overhanging a plastered wall built upon a bare foundation of huge Incan stone blocks. Hopping off the narrow roadway to the warning honk of a vehicle, onto ... read more
