After a very early morning call (04:00am) we caught the transfer to the airport. Unfortunately for us the transfer decided that we need to be there already at more or less 5:30am. So, we’ve had over 2 hours of time to kill before our flight started boarding. Thank god for the business lounges... In Lima we’ve had to go through the Passport control and the customs. The later has made us laugh - as usually you have to fill out the declaration. But then, once you submit that, you have to press a button which decides if you will have to go through the full check or not...¨:-) Already the flight into Cusco was impressive. The plane has stayed quite low the whole flight (or maybe it just looked like that, since the mountains below us ... read more

We all got drunk together last night and had a great time. It´s a good group. We took the boat back up the Rio Bajo Madre de Dios and caught the bus to the air port to fly to Cusco. I still have an upset stomach and a bit of a rash which I think is an allergic reaction to the Malerone I´ve been taking. There is no water in the hotel for showers or anything else. We get a briefing about the Matsu Pitchu tour and are all very excited. We leave tomorrow.... read more

Its very difficult to sleep beyond four in the lodge as the nosie of the jungle starts up. I wake with pain in my stomach and find myself visiting the toilet far to often. I could pass the contents of my guts through the eye of a needle. The parrots squark is murderous. We take a trek through the jungle fishing taranchula out of there holes with sticks. The Guide tells us all about the plants and trees. It is fasinating especially the Justice tree (more on this later) I sleep through lunch in the afternoon my stomach still in a right mess. We go piranha fishing in the afternoon no one catches anything but Dave, one of the irish lads, falls in which provides some light relief and a good laugh (more on this later) ... read more

Day 583 (1/11/08) Arriving at not too horrendous a time in the morning, we entered Cusco and grabbed a taxi over to our chosen hostel. By the time we had checked in breakfast was not far off so we chilled out and checked our email before having a bite to eat (more bread and jam) and then hitting our room for some bed time. Cusco is at an altitude of 3400m and any of the treks that lead to Machu Picchu hit similar, if not higher, altitudes so we had planned in a bit of time to relax and get a little more acclimatised before setting off. We all woke much more refreshed and got ourselves ready for the rest of the day. Not that our life revolves around food, but it just so happened that ... read more

Phew! We have returned, tired but very relaxed and happy, after our three night Inca Trail to the ruins of Machu Picchu. It was just awesome and we are really looking forward to our next "big walk" when we reach Milford Sound in New Zealand. We were amazingly lucky as we were the only two people to reserve with the tour operator, so had the guide, the enthusiastic and ardent Marco, all to ourselves. This meant we could take a break when we wanted (very important on the second day where you climb to Dead Womans Pass at 4,200m!) and had time with Marco to really get to know about both the Incas and the modern Cusquenian way of life. We were very surprised at the food on the trek, something we had not given much ... read more

Cusco After Macchu Pichu we had a free day in Cusco which was fantastic. I spent the day pottering around, exploring the city with Julia and Dan, a lovely couple from England. I really enjoyed Cusco and wished I had been able to spend some more time there. It´s got such a great vibe. Loads of friendly people from all over the world, heaps of good resturants, bars and clubs. We were out every night making the most of it! We were due to go down south to the floating islands on Lake Titikaka. That evening we got news from our tour leader that the roads were still blocked and there was no way we were going anywhere. Strikes The strike situation in south america is amazing. Bolivia (where I am now) is renowned for having ... read more

Hey all!! Just arrived back yesterday from the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu!! It was an absolutely amazing adventure. Friday we took a trip to the Sacred Valley, stopping at lots of old Inca ruins on the way, abley guided by one Julio Cesar!! He was our guide for the Inca Trail too. We started off at Sacsaywaman above Cuzco, which was cool. Cuzco was built shaped like a Puma (one of the old Incan animals for strength, representing the land) and the ruins are at the head of the puma. They were an old Incan fortress and it was here that the Spanish were nearly (but not quite) routed from Peru. It was built over three levels and the stonework at the bottom was absolutely massive, and very cleverly carved lined up so that there ... read more

We´ll we are still in Cusco and looks like we may be for a few days. We were planning to head to Boliva via Lake Titicaca, but it appears the locals are a bit cheesed off about what they see as unlawful overuse of local resources and therefore have set up a roadblock and aren´t letting any buses through. It´s OK though as we have a great little hostel and have met some nice people here. If we can´t get on a bus today/tonight then we´ll head for the markets and some more Inca Ruins just out of Cusco in Pisca. I might buy myself some pan pipes and start learning some tunes. I was thinking I could learn Bleeding Love and some Take That tunes on the pan pipes and then Sarita and we could ... read more

I felt like a cardboard cut-out of myself. The only reason I knew I still existed was that I could see myself - albeit in double vision. Whilst I wasn’t feeling nearly as bad as I had been on the train, my mouth was dry and even my skin was flaking. I got up once in the morning to walk up to the balcony and have a water but I only lasted 15 minutes before I needed to go back to bed. Jo and my futbol mate from the hostel kept me in supplies of Manzanilla, Anis & Coca tea (maté) and lemonade throughout the morning. Buy 1400 I knew that I needed to eat something or I would be in danger of getting sick again. I needed something solid, neutral and tasteless. The 1/4 pounder ... read more
