Hola lovely people... Hope all is well and life is grand? So what have we been up to...a little excursion into Bolivia and now we are in Cuzco, Peru. We had a wildlife fest on the river Beni, in Bolivian Amazon Basin. A brillant few days of sunshine, sailing up the river and spotting seeing one of the cuddley and peaceful animals on earth, the humble Capabara. Awwwwwwwwww how cute and even cuter, Andy getting all excited. Story is that he saw some in Cricket St Thomas about 15 years ago and has loved them ever since. So seeing 100's in the wild was a bit of a rush. It must have been breeding season, cause there were lots of cute little babers. People were nice on the tour, apart from wanting to kill Miss Pony ... read more

Well we hit Lima (well Mirafloes which is the posh suburb on the coast) and instantly noticed how lovely and fun all the locals were. The little guy on the plane gave me his card and home address and telephone number and said if we hit any trouble and needed a place to stay or help with anything just give him a buzz. We celebrated our first wedding anniversary in style at a nice Hotel, where they gave us a top floor suite, and had dinner looking over the coastline while sipping on our Pisco Sours. Not to be beaten I ordered another Lemon/Lime Slushy and survived this time. For all those who questioned why you would order a lime slushy, it is not an artifical lime slushy that you get at the service station when ... read more

I think as we have been here for 3 weeks now and because besides Machu Picchu there is also so much to do and see here and I also think that the Inka Trail desereves it's own separate blog. From our experience so far, many gringos come to Cusco, do the Inca Trail, look round the city and leave. Cusco and the surrounding area is peppered with Inca sites and pre-Inca sites with some dating from just after Christ. Admittedly I don't think that any compare in mysticism or grandeur to Machu Picchu and the Inca Trail, but they are all absolutely magnificent in their own special ways and I think it's such a shame that so many people don´t really know about them or simply dismiss them. Fortunately many people do visit them. The main ... read more

We were out of bed at 0830 and had to have a cold shower as I couldn’t figure out the electric heating system. We bumped into David - the Irishman we had met in Nazca - who was staying at the same hostel and between us we solved New Zealand’s and the worlds rugby problems. The sun was out when we finally decided to do something so we went to the ATM to get finds to pay for the backpacker train to Cusco US$100 each and our flight from Cusco to Lima US$117 each. Jo found a BNZ MasterCard by the ATM so we wrote a message saying to meet us at our hostel between 1200 and 1300 and left it by the machine. Everywhere around Plaza de Armas gringos are approached by “travel agencies”, people ... read more

Unbelievably our bus arrived an hour earlier than expected into Cusco so we were left at the bus terminal in the middle of the night not too sure what to do. Taxi drivers and touts were in abundance despite the hour so it was not like we weren’t short for advice! We had a coffee and took a look at Lonely Planet to see if we could find any candidate hostels and also to check the “dangers and annoyances” section to see if it was safe to be around town in Cusco at that hour. We went slightly against the advice of LP and at 0400 we selected the only cab driver that left us alone to take us to a hostel. It seems that not all hostels are 24 hours however and we ended up ... read more

Well, it has been a wild ride since arriving in Cuzco- acclimatizing to 10,000ft/3,400m, being pan-handled constantly and spending a night in the hospital have all been a part of the Peruvian experience so far. Connie arrived on Sunday 10/12 after 30 hours of flying on 5 different planes. The first day included getting oriented to the city, eating and going to bed early with a huge headache. Cuzco has the feel of a southern European city complete with tourist shops and restaurants for all types of travelers. It is uniquely Peruvian with traditionally dressed women selling their artwork and traditional food. Acutally, it seems as if everybody here had something to sell! There is a great local market in the center of town for buying fruits, vegetables, meats and handicrafts. The Peruvians are very welcoming ... read more

A massive two entries today as i have been super busy in the last week... so..lake titicaca is beautiful...it looks similar to being on a greek island when you are there...whilst there we had a homestay...this started with a boat trip around the lake..which is massive...and then lunch on one island....lunch was great - even tho it involved a 45min trek uphill to get to it....it was in an open air restaurant overlooking the lake, and consisted of just caught trout...it was v yummy.. we then headed to the homestay island....at the homestay the group was split into pairs and we stayed in the houses of the islanders for the evening...it was really interesting to see...all the floors are mud, the kitchen consisted of a wood fire and the toilet was a hole in a field ... read more

Before we reach ollytaytambo we did a tour thru the sacred valley....whichis a very fertile valley here with a lot of incan ruins...and apparently 3000 types of potato...altho susupiciously no one i asked could name more than 4... the main ruin in ollytaytambo is a sun temple...all the ruins here are in remarkably good condition...espcially since you are allowed to climb all over them....and there is nothing resembling a handrail anywhere... then after a nights nap we headed out to the lares trek... the lares trek is a 3 day trek thru the peruvian highlands...which basically consists of climbing a large mountain and then coming down the other side...it started off perfectly...amazing scenary, good lunch..but then we had to start walking...and let me tell you that walking up a mountain at altitude is not easy...not easy ... read more

Thanks to Clair (our tour operator in the UK) for booking the window seat. As we arrive in Cusco we saw snow capped mountains and the view of the city as we landed was great. We were picked up by the agent who took us to our hotel (located at the bottom of Ave De Sol). We booked the city tour (explained later) Machu Picchu (would have liked to have spent a night near the site but the hotel price was $900) so we opted for the day trip: taxi, train, taxi, bus, and a day in the sacred valley. That evening we had dinner in an Italian which was great, meal for two with wine came to 70Sols about 14quid or 22dollars US. We both had a slight head ache (due to the altitude 3200M). ... read more
