The Mami Panchita driver deposits me at Lima airport. I´m quickly through the expedited Lan.com check-in lane, and Lan Peru 71 bound for Cuzco lifts off the tarmack on time. In a window seat, I have views of the Andes, the Cordilla Blanca and Cordilla Negra. They are majestic, stark, remote in contours of brown, white, and distant grey. At the Cuzco airport, Alan from my tour operator for the Inca Trail meets me. We are at Los Ninos I Hotel by noon. On the way we chat in mixed English and Spanish, and I´m booked on a Cuzco City tour at 2. Los Ninos I is a hotel founded in 1998 as part of a project that Dutch woman Jolanda van den Berg founded to support the homeless children of Cuzco. The project know has ... read more

Having been on a trek to Macchu Picchu, I decided it was pretty much eventful enough for it to have it's own blog. Plus I've done nothing else but drink in Cusco, so describing that could be a little boring. We signed up for a four day trek to the ancient inca ruins, which involved 1 day of cycling and 3 days of walking. Also tagging along was a northern lass named Sally, who turned out to be a disaster area! DAY ONE Wake up at 7.30, on a bus for 8, on bikes at the top of a fook off mountain by about midday. Load up on water and sunscreen, then it was off for 1 hour of cruising down a road with more twists and turns than I'd like to think about. Sanjay went ... read more

Sunday 24 No rest for the wicked, it was up early again and down to the local bus station. Travelled for approximately 6-7 hours across the spectacular Altiplano to Cuzco. We were all suffering different symptoms from the altitude so were munching on the coca leaf lollies. Stopped at the point midway between Puno and Cusco at 4335m and what an absolutely fantastic view and of course no photo opportunity is complete without the numerous ‘tourist traps’. Commercialism has really caught up…a little girl with a lamb and baby alpaca is really cute, but if you want to take a photo …’that will be 1 sol’ and she wouldn’t take anything less! Continued onto Cusco. This time we arrived during day light hours. Since we had arrived early and had spent the last couple of days ... read more

We had to meet in the foyer at 4.50am.. ouch! These early mornings are killing me.. I'm supposed to be on holiday! We got a really early flight to Cuzco and I slept the whole way. I don't even remember taking off. Cuzco was an amazing town and we were so surprised when we turned up at the hotel as it was gorgeous! Hardly roughing it. We had a free day so we all headed for Jack's - a cafe run by an irish guy who now lives here. After all the local peruvian food and drink, we were all desperate for a decent cup of coffee and some home cooked food. The 'works' breakfast was massive and could have fed me for a week. It was so good we went there for dinner again that ... read more

Kelly and I spent the day walking around Cuzco, seeing the museums and planning our future travels, what we didn´t count on is how freaking cold it can get here. I know that someone else would probably have put together the facts that (1) its winter here and (2) we are 9,000 feet above sea level and figured out that the Peruvian Andes may be a bit chilly. We, however, did not quite pack for the trip correctly. Kelly at least has a pair of sneakers. I, on the other-hand, have only a single pair of sandals and a single pair of socks (the sandles are made of Yak, which do live above the tree line, but this has not helped my frigid exposed feet so far). Being unprepared has, however, enabled us to justify SHOPPING! ... read more

So, having left shitty La Paz, ventured through Copacobana (really not much to say, I discovered I like trout, which is a bonus), we arrived in Cusco, Peru, on Friday. And wow, what a place! Lovely weather, guinea pig to eat, kids trying to sell me puppies for 3 pounds, and more partying til 6AM! Two nights in a row in fact, both of which have involved some form of face painting and varying degrees of degradation. Disclaimer: Mother, you may not want to read this bit! Last night produced THE story of the trip so far for me! Although Sanjay comes a close second with his having to relieve his dodgy bowels off the side of a boat, but thats another story... Having been out saturday night, and met a very lovely (if tiny and ... read more

We went to the orientation tonight for our four day hike along the Lares route to Machu Picchu tomorrow, and were a bit surprised to learn that everyone else in the group hired porters to carry their bags. One man even complained quite forcefully about having to carry his own 1.5L water bottle! This should be interesting. We´ve spent the past couple of days exploring the area in and around Cusco. This city was the capital of the Inca empire, and the amount of ruins here are simply astounding. Poor Steve has had to endure MANY hours of me salivating over various museum exhibits of Inca artifacts. It´s amazing to see in person all of the pieces I spent years studying in undergrad (Anthropology major). I have been most impressed with the architecture of many structures. ... read more

Today began very early with a mad dash through the Lima airport at 5:00am after a late night of pisco-fueled fun with my friend, Melisa, and her fiance, Samuel. We managed to not only make our 5:20 flight, but we among the first to board the plane! We arrived in Cusco a short hour later, and were surprised to see our breath in the airport terminal - it´s that cold! We spotted a van from a hostel that Steve had contacted about a room, and talked our way into a ride to town. The hostel was full, but the person at the desk was wonderful and called around to other inns and hostels until she found us a room. We were pretty proud of ourselves for having finagled a free ride and concierge service before 7:00am! ... read more

And here begins the vacation part of my vacation. Yet another really early morning. I rolled out of my down haven one last time and was welcomed by a lukewarm shower that turned cool by the end. The hotel is under major renovations, and apparently they´re playing with the hot water. We met our travel agent down in the lobby at 6:15 and got in HIS car (how many travel agents do that?!) for a ride to the airport. Our plans had been pretty up in the air for a while, and we finally settled on something on Monday (we were kind of forced to pick Mon because many of the hotels and transports had filled up). The rough outline is Cusco city with city tour on Sat, Sun to Macchu Pichu and spend the night ... read more

Cusco We have been in Cusco since arriving on Wednesday, 6 August from BA. The first two to three days were cold and rainy, and we generally acclimatised to the high altitude by chilling and having lots of coca tea. For us, Cusco is the most amazing place in the world at the moment. But reserve judgement from us, as we have not been everywhere in the world... yet. Cusco is a mix of Inca ruins and old Spanish colonial buildings, with narrow cobblestone streets, lively cafes and a bustling vibe. We really think that anyone would fall in love with Cusco after being here for a while. The vibe is just magic. We are and have been staying at Casa de la Gringa in San Blas for our time in Cusco, which is a very ... read more
