Hi there everyone! You can stop the charity drive to send us over clothing parcels as we have our bags! Only two days after we arrived! We have had an exciting day spending time actually choosing an outfit and not having to use the hotel toiletries (well more important for me than Dave as you can imagine!) Dave only had to go commando for 3 hours so mom no chaffing!!! We have just sampled our first bottle of local wine which was very nice and just off for a siesta before heading off to sample the local Alpaca and Guinea Pig possibly!! Martin - you will be pleased to know that we surpassed our cultural high point and spent most of last night in the highest Irish Owned bar in the world!! Well it was happy ... read more

Yes we´ve made it in one piece!! Unfortunately with no bags thanks to AA Airlines. :-( Everything else has gone to plan and Cusco is truely amazing. Not much else to say other than we´re wearing the same clothes we had on yesterday, and the day before!! Lau´s washed her undies.....I´m going for the reversal method to start with at least. ;-) Today´s a national holiday so it doesn´t look like we´ll get them back until tomorrow.....fingers crossed. Anyway, wish us luck.... read more

Inca sites in abundance The parts of Peru and Bolivia we visited on our trip are very much dominated by the Andes. We became aware of that when we arrived in Cusco. We became aware of that the hard way. Emma suffered from mild altitude sickness the day we arrived in Cusco and Ake suffered bad from the thin air. Cusco sits at an altitude of 3326 meters and there is a significantly lower air pressure there compared to sea level. Just walking around made you loose your breath completely. We stayed in Cusco three days before heading off to walk the Inca trail. Ake had some worries about the hike. If simple walking at altitude 3326 meters is that hard, what is it then like to hike with a heavy backpack at altitude of 4000 ... read more

I arrived in Cusco last Wednesday, and I immediately went and tries to sort out a 4 day trek to Choquequirao, which are the other set of Inca ruins that they are still discovering. Everything looked to be on track, we had managed to cobble together 4 people for the trek - Great. Then the following evening - just 10 hrs before leaving I was told that one of the group had altitude sickness, and so all 3 of them were pulling out of the trek! - No trek!!! Having already booked my onward flight to Argentina I was not happy, as I would quite happily have stayed an extra couple of days to do this trek. Instead I have been staying around Cusco. At the weekend I went and did some white water rafting ( ... read more

We have now been in Cusco since Wednesday afternoon. What a change in temperature! We went from soo hot and humid to very very very cold. We immediately bought mittens and hats and plan to buy more! haha.... Cusco though is a very beautiful mountain city. We are staying at a hostel which has amazing views of the city and surrounding mountains - very nice scenery for a morning cup of Coca Tea. The city is full of tourists but the locals are very helpful. We have met many travellers from various parts of the world and shared experiences and stories about traveling to the next destination. So far our days have been full of trying to organize our itinerary from here. Transportation is difficult to coordinate in Peru and it is proving challenging to chart ... read more

Blogger Bec and Dougo Has there ever been a bigger tribute to the manufactors of outdoor gear than the streets of Cusco?? North Face, Quecha, Kathmandu, Mountain Designs, Macpac, Berger, Doite, Deuter, Osprey: scruffy backpackers cheek by jowl with popcorn eaters (luxury tourists), Cusco is a heaving mass of outdoor consumerism. And it ain´t in the shops folks, it´s on the back/feet/scalp/chest/pocket of every gringo that you pass on the overcrowded streets. Jungle - check. Mountain - check. Ancient Incan ruins - check. Spanish cathedrals - check. You want it, Cusco has it and it seems that every tourist on earth wants a piece. Including us! Cusco, the Inca heartland and capital, is where our Inca Trail journey really begins and we are in the thick of it all proudly prowling the streets decked out ... read more

After a somewhat torturous 18 hour bus ride from La Paz, we arrived in Cusco, Peru after midnight, tired and grumpy. We were even grumpier when the taxi driver ripped us off, charging 20 soles instead of the 5 soles it should have cost, but your options are limited after midnight when you are tired in a strange City. The bus ride was meant to be a direct bus, but ended up being three buses from different companies that regressed in quality each time. Obviously the first company just bought the cheapest crappiest tickets it could for the connecting buses it wasn't bothering to run. I do not know what the Bolivian concept of direct is, but it does not align with my own understanding. None of the buses had toilets, and when I asked the ... read more

Peel away all the tchotchky souvenir shops, all the tour agencies, all the backpacker restaurants (many, oddly, attempting to entice an Israeli clientele), the massage parlors, and all the other trappings of a tourist trap, and Cuzco reveals itself as an utterly fascinating case study in colonial domination. The current city is literally built on the ruins of the original Qosqo, the imperial capital of the Inkas. (History nerd alert: it is a misnomer, actually, to call the people of the empire as a whole "inkas" - the term Inka really only applies to the kings. The Inka Empire, as we call it, was actually known as Tawantinsuyu - the "Four Regions" - in Quechua.) Churches and colonial palaces were built on the distinctive walls of the inkan temples and residences the Spaniards destroyed. You turn ... read more
