Hola from Cusco! Today we left the volunteer house in Lima at 330 am to make our way to the airport to fly to Cusco. The flight was only an hour and generally pretty uneventful. While I was waiting to board the plane an old Peruvian man struck up a conversation with me. Because I was boarding the plane after my friends (my seat was closer to the front of the plane) I think he was concerned that I was flying on the plane alone. He made sure that I knew he was only one row behind him in case I needed anything. He was basically a Peruvian version of Grandpa. When it was time to get off the plane, he was sure to let me go infront of him and told me to be safe ... read more

I´m not exactly sure what day it is or how long I have been in Peru. Time is stretched here. And I couldn´t be more pleased!! I think it has been a little over a week, and already and done and seen so much!! arriving in Lima airport, and having to wait many hours due to my own cheapness about flights to Cusco, ended up paying the same price anyway, so lesson one learned very quickly!! Cusco is high in the Andes mounain range and it takes a couple of days to acclimatize to the altitude. Coca Tea several times a day is the best remedy (thank you for the tip Sil!!) coca leaves (the ones used to make cocaine) are medicinal in leaf form and is very useful to combat the nausea, headache, and other ... read more

On our way back to Cusco we stopped at Chinchero. The town was included on our sacred valley tour but we did not get to go to it because we got off at Ollantaytambo to catch our train to Machu Pichu. We walked through a locals market, which was really interesting. Kate got hassled AGAIN by little kids wanting to sell tacky fake lama beanies with lama patterns on them. She was always attracting people to hassle her for some reason. At one point in Cusco some little kid ended up telling her she was a stupid bitch, when she walked away from his finger puppets. I was really shocked. No one had said anything even close to that abusive to me before. We walked around the Inca ruins outside of town, but they paled in ... read more

Hola!! So we´re still in Cusco at the moment. This would have to be my most favourite place in the world at the moment!! It has cobble stone streets everywhere (with lots of huge hills I might add!!). There is Inca stone in every inch of the place. I am - in a slightly twisted way - lucky that I got sick in Cusco, as I had to spend the time whilst Nick was doing the Inca Trail, here. I now consider myself Peruvian and a local of Cusco - I wish!! I cannot tell you how beautiful the people are here. When I was sick the hotel staff were so concerned. And still now that I have recovered from the altitude, they still ask of my health. Nick not only conquered the Inca Trail - ... read more

Day 291 - Thursday 17 July We arrived into Cusco the old Inca capital at about half five in the morning, and after quickly finding some accommodation it was back to bed for a few more hours sleep. Around lunchtime we were up and about again and headed off to another English pub. I think i'm starting to miss English food again after all this time away. They also had English magazines and after such a long time it was good to flick through one. With dinner over we headed over to a few travel agents. We wanted to walk the origional Inca trail through the sacred valley of the Incas to Machu Picchu. Unfortunately authorities limit the numbers and it sells out six months in advance. As we couldn't commit to a date back then ... read more

Hola Amigos!! Well .. again I can´t spend too much on this thing cos I have to run in a mo. But to fill you in. I have been deadly sick with Altitude Sickness for around 4 days. This involves constant headaches, vomiting and breathlessness. So I have been on medication and oxygen which has absolutely devestated me. I am only just coming to terms with the fact that I have been unable to do the Inca Trail. Which coincidentally was the purpose of my trip. Nick has been able to do it, and as I type this is on the 3rd day of the trek. I will be joining him at Machu Pichu tomorrow morning - hopefully enjoying the spectacular sunrise over it together. I am still so upset by this and really has killed ... read more

So we´re back in peru after a very interesting journey from La Paz, stayed in the Loki hostal which is infamous among travellers, real duvets and hot showers!!! Was immense, bt its a party hostel, and the 7am bus to Peru was a chalenge to say the least... 14 hours... 3 stops (serious leg crossage was needed) and alot of confusion at the border all with a bitch of a hangover meant that we arrived in Cusco disgruntled and ready to collapse. Cusco, however, is amazing!!! Its arguably the most gringoey city in South America, but deservedly so! The architecture is incredible, everywhere you look theres somehting amazing, add to that the neverending supply of english pubs, people and products and its like, indescribable! I can imagine that if you hadnt been travelling for too long ... read more
