Well here I am am!! Along with my travel campanion Andew Gissing (Gissa) we have made it to South America! After the best flight ever on the new Qantas A380 and a quick stop over in LA, it was time to head back down to the Southern Hemisphere and into Lima, the Peruvian capital. Arriving in Lima at 1am sure was an experience with many dodgy people hanging around and the war torn looking streets completely dark and vacant. However, it wasn't too long before Gissa joined me though and the daylight bought some safety to a very tired and poor looking town. We soon hit the streets and explored the beatiful but rotting spanish architecture and grand squares. There were many international flags including the Aussie one flying about and high security with water cannon ... read more

Arriving in Cuzco was an interesting experience. Having come from the Amazon jungle, the thin air was instantly noticable, and within a few hours, my head was thumping and I had no appetite. I wandered around the very pretty town like a zombie for several days. Our first real day in Cuzco, we wandered around in the morning, visiting the museum at the Qorinkacncha site where the Santa Domingo Church currently stands on top of the old Inca temple of the sun. Amazingly, earthquake has destroyed the church twice yet the Inca stonework here is great. Unfortunately the museum has no English so we get little benefit. We spend most of the morning wandering around the Plaza de Armas which is a very pretty plaza. In the afternoon we do a city tour which takes us ... read more

We were picked up from Cusco, the belly button or center of the Inca world. We each had an allowance of a five kg kit bag, to be carried by the porters stuffed with sleeping bag and a few changes of clothes. I also took a back pack with about seven kg of stuff that I thought I would need including I-pod, plastic mac, firstaid kit, energy bars and perhaps the most valuable of comodities on the trail - toilet paper. The Inca trail starts after a day visiting some other important Inca ruins, including Sacsayhuaman which overlooks Cusco itself and a night in a small village near the first Inca trail check point. We have to show our tickets and passports as tourism on the Inca trail is controlled to help preserve them. Our guide, ... read more

Day 589 (7/11/08) We left Kayla and Jason, neither of whom was feeling well, in bed and headed out to the market to find a few bits and pieces for lunch. As we walked into the market who should we bump into but our lovely guide Roger tucking into a fruit smoothie. We joined him for a drink and so began the magical mystery tour that today was going to turn into. Roger decided that he fancied Cuy for lunch (that´s guinea pig to you and me, a local delicacy) and asked if we wanted to come along. It's something that we´d wanted to try whilst we were here so thinking that he must know a good place in town we thought it was a great idea. He did know a good place but it wasn´t ... read more

arrived in cusco and again found really nice hostal, built on inca foundations up on the hill through a cobbled steet and passed the famous wall. this was the best thing about cusco for me, i probably shouldnt have bothered with it. sorry if that sounds ungrateful but it was awful. there are more tourists than locals there, and most of them are just on holidays, getting in the way and walking really slowly. it is extremely expensive, you pay the same prices in europe for food and restaurants, i couldnt even afford to buy food in the supermarket so i had to go to the market everyday, which is fine, there are less gringos in there. all the shops sell ridiculous things like silver photo frames and over priced souvenirs, nearly every shop has a ... read more

Introductory shout out: Congrats Mike and Kathy! Welcome aboard Carter :) So.... I have spent the last few days in Cusco, waiting for my trip out to Manchu Picchu. Generally, the time here has been good. I met many people in the hostel, notably Jim and Omar, from England(Cambrdige) and Lima, respectively. Between them we had a guitar and a small drum to play, which was fun. A couple nights ago we went to restaurant-bar and played pool, making friends with some locals and more travelers from England. Good time all around. In the spare time between Manu and Manchu Picchu, I honestly wasn´t interested in seeing the other ruins and tours in Manchu Picchu, despite the abundance. I instead decided to use the two days for some Spanish lessons. In Cusco Spanish language schools are ... read more

One more update from Cuzco... My ankle is OK. Although I can still feel it a little bit, but the bruise and the swelling are going down. Last couple of days we've spend very relaxing. Just went for some walks around town... it is getting easier and easier to walk with every day we're spending here. OUr bodies are getting used to the altitude and we no longer run out of breath after 10 steps up the stairs (now it's after 20...) ... read more

Here is the fifth article about our south americain trip... Sorry for the map, it does not work so you will get one in the next article. Cusco, Peru: The travel from Puerto Maldonado to Cusco was an unexpected & unforgettable experience. As we said in the previous article, the trip takes 15 hours for 400 km. The road is only praticable outside the rainy season. We took a night bus. After few hours, everyone was trying to sleep when suddenly weird noises woke us up. It sounded like someone was drumming on the bus´roof. Actually it was not a drummer but huge stones falling. The bus eventually stopped and one passenger walked to the front holding with both hands a massive stone. It went through the roof making a large hole. Fortunately no one was ... read more
