Well, The flight from israel was late on departure, because of a crack in the pilot's windsheild (which would have made it a non shield if the flight would have taken off). Luckly i had 4 hours between the flights and thus i reached the flight on the last second, which did not help me avoid waiting for another delay, this time in the flight to rio, for another hour. At the end i reached the hotel Stone of a Beach at about 1 AM local time after a 24 hour journey. Here in Rio its summer and the humidity and temperatures remind me of a really bad summer day in Tel-Aviv. Anyway i didnt wait much and went on a tour to see Jesus standing and a set of really nice mosaic stairs . Also ... read more

Happy New Year to you all!! So whats new with the Ganders:- We left Sao Paulo on sunday 30th Dec. We caught the metro to the bus station & then a 6 hour bus journey to Rio through lush green countryside. Most comfortable coach so far. Taxi to our hostel a few blocks away from Copocabana beach. We had to pay 3 times the usual price for a one bedroom apartment with 2 bunkbeds in the kitchen which we shared for 4 nights. We went for a walk along the beach which would have been beautiful had it had millions of people on it. The sand was golden & with beautiful views looking up to sugar loaf mountain. We caught a bus to Ipanema beach which had just as many people on it. We walked along ... read more

So my last blog ended with me having a few stomach problems and hoping I wouldn´t be the next one needing the doctor! After feeling rough for two days and frequent trips to the loo, we didn´t call a doctor but went to the chemist and managed to get the anti-biotics that Miles was prescibed for his diarrea. Three tablets to be taken one a day. We had a six hour bus journey to Rio de Janeiro the following day, so to be sure of no incidents on the bus I chose to not eat until we were in Rio. Thankfully the tablets seemed to have worked and at the moment I feel OK. Our hostel in Rio was OK, we thought we had a two bedroom apartment, but we had one bedroom with twin beds ... read more

Happy New Year, goodbye 2007, welcome 2008. 2 million people, 10 cruise ships, 16 mins of fireworks and 3 great friends. Out with all the false promises and misadventures of 2007 and in with the new and shiny 2008. Best wishes to everyone! I wrote the paragraph above at 2.30am after partying with everyone in the streets. This I write at 5pm the next day - still the 1st January 2008 - Wow - what a new years party, the biggest one I have ever attended. A few friends and I headed down to Copacabana beach - we got as close as we could to the breaking waves. The fireworks are launched from 6 barges that are anchored out a few hundred meters, closer than the cruise ships shown in the photos. Just before the countdown ... read more

One little idea that me and Shane pondered over at the age of about 15.... to travel the world, and though this idea probably came about when we were bored in maths class or something similar, here we are some 9 years later on the first day of our adventure. Boarding the plane last night shane started being a drama queen, something both of us can be guilty of at times. He told the cabin crew that he had a pathological fear of flying especially on long haul flights and despite this being a lie and me having to force my laughter down one of the flight attendants moved us to first class, ha... We just got back from visiting the Cristo Redentor statue. Now that´s the way to spend christmas eve. It was so unbelievably impressive. The views of the city are just fantastic (we even saw the worlds largest floating christmas tree!) and the statue itself is so impressive! Tomorrow we plan to go up Sugar Loaf mountain if the cable cars are still operating. I hope they are. The two days we spent in Sao Paulo were fairy uneventful. The city isn´t all that interesting, we walked around for about 3 hours and saw al the pretty buildings. We also saw a massive nativity scene set in the amazon, so instead of cows ad sheep there were crocodiles and leopards and instead of shepards and wise men there were indians... Interesting! We aso saw a man covered ... read more

We just spent five days in Rio and it is an amazing city. We were lucky to stay in a really social hostel so we met tons of other travellers. We did some sightseeing in the city to check out the main sights, like the Christ the Redeemer statue that overlooks the city. This was one of my favourite activities since we first stopped at a lookout to take pictures of the city and then went all the way up to the lookout right underneath the statue. The day we went it was hot and the sun was shining, but the statue was still shrouded in mist, which made it look really cool. On the same tour we also stopped to see this really amazing urban art project. An artist from Chile decided to tile and ... read more

Only in Rio can you bump into gorgeous men walking down a busy city street at 10pm in the evening wearing only speedos. What a crazy, beautiful, exciting city this is. The movement of people around the streets, beaches and parks gave Rio an amazing vibe that lasted from early morning to late at night. As we were here for a week and a half we decided to rent an apartment and found ourselves a compact and bijou 1 bed flat just a stones throw from Copacabana Beach. We were practically next door to the Copacabana Palace, but we don´t like to brag. We have done all the main touristy things, like a trip to the statue of Christ and taking the cable car to Sugar Loaf Mountain, but the best thing about Rio is just ... read more

Hi All We have moved from Botafogo to Copacabana which has coincided with the start of the Football World Cup...... Beech Football! But it is still pretty good, its free entrance as well! Today we watched Brazil destroy the Solomon Islands and Portugal beat Iran but suprisingly on Penalties! But better than that Danny and Craig went to the Maracana Wednesday night with 62,000 mental Brazilian Football fans and i mean mental! They go absolute mad for it out here. The Maracana is a quality venue and worth its reputation but the fans make it even more special. The amount of noise they make and atmosphere they create is better than any ground in England by a distance, but the standard of football is not, but entertaining nonethe less! Anyhow i think that is enough about ... read more
