After visiting the Brazilian side of the falls in the morning, we decided to have another go at Ciudade del Este in Paraguay in the afternoon. This time we went by bus and didnt go through immigration - we checked that you needn't do all that faff if you're just doing a day trip- and besides, we've got the passport stamps now!! We had both decided that a posh camera for some of the more spectacular scenery would be a good investment so we started our bargain hunt. It turned out to be a very stressful afternoon. As it was the Thursday before a long Easter weekend every shop we went in decided to tell us that they were about to close and that if we wanted a camera we needed to buy it then and ... read more

I made my way down to Rio after Carnival which would have been an easy bus ride but ended taking an extra 15 hours. Rio is everything you expect it to be.. its beautiful, scary, intense and relaxing there is no way to explain it. On my first day of sight seeing it was a bit cloudy but then it cleared up and was great.... read more

Ja hoor, heb je hem weer! Altijd weer diezelfde over-het-paard-getilde lauwtoffe godgloeiende pestpokke volautomatische gaskamerbrede teringtouwtyfus blafkankerkolere kutblog!

Welcome to the first of many travel blogs from our big adventure around South America, Central America…..etc. We will enjoy sharing our journey with all of you, our friends and family, along the way and hopefully share a bit of the holiday glow from afar. Well, we have finally made it to Rio de Janeiro! After weeks of packing up our lives in Melbourne it seems really strange now to be sitting on the beach in Ipanema with nothing to do but enjoy the scenery! No lists, no commitments, no time frames - we’re almost at a loss of what to do with ourselves. Not that it will take us too long to settle into our travelling groove… As this is only day two, we haven’t done too much adventuring yet. Trying to push through the ... read more

Welcome to what is probably the last blog of the trip, which I am writing a block away from Copacabana beach (unfortunately there has been persistant rain over the past four or five days, which explains why I´m writing this and am not there). From Asuncion, we headed to Foz in Brazil. The border was the most lively we had seen the Paraguayans with roadside vendors running after cars and guys trying to sell us ´genuine´ David Beckham sunglasses inside the border checkpoint. On the other side of the border, the scene was instantly more energetic with huge queues of Brazilians waiting to pass through customs with their flatscreen tvs (Paraguay is a duty free zone) whilst we passed through a small hut that represented passport control. Our first night in Foz we went to the ... read more

Well i´m leaving wet and rainy Rio 2moro in the search of some sun. I got here on Friday and it was sunny for a few hours, as was Saturday, but now it´s Tuesday and it´s almost been raining solid since ! But don´t worry I have enjoyed some of Rio. When i planned to go to Rio in the 1st place I was really scared, hearing all stories about robberies and the like, actually we met these American guys who got their clothes robbed while swimming in the sea, but then played extra to get their clothes back and then ended up hanging out with their robbers ! But my paranoia has payed off so far, as touch Wood (knock, knock) i haven´t been robbed. Well i´m only caring around a wallet with only a ... read more

Finally arrived in rio on Monday 4th Feb. Ask most people to describe Rio and they´ll say things along the lines of "beautiful beaches", "sunkissed", "paradise" etc.. If you´d asked us that Monday afternoon we would have replied "pissing down"! Yes, 24 hours after leaving a bright, sunny Manchester we started our 6 month trip in a wet, muggy Rio! We arrived at our hotel (First Barra, also called Tryp Barra on tínternet) which was fine but quite a way out in Barra da Tijuca. We knew Barra wasn´t going to be central and is, effectively a different town, however, we didn´t realise just how big Barra was and, lo and behold, we seemed to be at the far end. The taxi from the airport cost 92 reais (about 25 pounds). We arranged it at a ... read more

Well i left Ushuaia, Argentina at 9pm on Monday and got to Florianapolis, Brazil midday on Tuesday after 3 flights, 3 checkins, 5 airports ( had to change airports in Beonas Arues, got a taxi to bring me from one to the other and being 2am in the morning my head wasn´t screwed on so i left my handbag in the car and only realised 5 mins later when i went to check in and had no bag that had my passport, phone and all my money, so i was very close to tears until i realised that i had a receipt for the taxi and was able to track it down and got my bag back 15 mins later phew ! what a relief it was too). In Florainapolis was met by Derval and ... read more

Rio So we finally made it to Rio after about a zillion hours flying. First couple of days just wandered around Copacabana and beach a bit, and sampled my first (of many) Brazilian caipirinha. Met up with some friends after a few days (Helen and Fergus), spent the day on the beach catchng up and so the caipirinha drinking continued........ Carnival at the sambadrome was fantastic. The costumes and floats were spectacular........and sooo much glitter!!! It all started at around 9pm and finished at 6am - wasn´t sure I´d make through but we met a couple of Brazilian guys who made sure we were dancing constantly and never without a beer!!!! There were loads of street stalls all around Rio sellng costumes and outfits for carnival - I resisted the urge to buy a glitter wig ... read more

This was the firt stay of our trip and boy was it weird!!! Stayed in a hotel for the first night and then moved to a hostel called Stone of the Beach which was based 2blocks from Copacabana. Was a very nice hostel, they organised a tour for us that basically took us all around the city. We went to see Cristo Redentor, The Favelas (Really poor part of the city where there are shantys, but supposedly the guide said that it is probably the safest par6t of Rio - Weird), Maracana Stadium where all famous brazilians played like Pele etc. We then decided to take a trip downtown along the beach to Ipanema where i bumped into the fergusons from back home, (Really weird cos i did not have a clue that they were gonna ... read more
