Third Stop: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Highlights: Rio is a huge city with a perpetual cloud of pollution hovering over it. However, the white sand beaches make for beautiful crystal blue water. With the tons of surrounding shanty towns (Favelas), the only place you want to be is on the beach. We´ve heard that the nightlife in Rio is awesome, but I guess not much goes on during the week. We did find this awesome bar called Melt that happened to have a concert that went off! I appreciated the fact that even though they turned away some people at the door, when they asked me in Portuguese if we were on the list and I responded in English that we weren´t, they mumbled something about ¨Gringos¨and let us in. Copacobana can be shady at night ... read more

Shortly arrived in Rio. I spent some time at Vitor's place, a brazilian friend of mine. He lives in Barra, a part of the city that looks more like Miami than like South America. In order to be closer to my language school, I moved to a hostel in Copacabana, which is closer to the city center. Below are pics of some of the nicest beaches I have seen here so far. Still have to discover a lot more of the city though ... ... read more

After Iguazu, we finally had a chance to slow down a bit and enjoy the trip as our next destination was Rio. We were in Rio for 5 days and it is more of a place that you experience as opposed to a place that you go to see a bunch of sights. Regardless, we were sort of in the sight seeing mode after Cusco and Iguazu so the fist day we spent checking out Impanema beach and we also went to Corcovado to see the Christ Redeemer statue. Ipanema is an amazing beach because it is a city beach but the water is so clear that you would think that it is some remote island in the Pacific. Most of the pictures are from the point between Ipanema and Copacabana beaches. We actually stayed at ... read more

It is with a heavy heart that we announce that this is to be our final travelblog. Thanks to everyone who has made the effort to read our entries. We had hoped to update you all over the past week or two but what with lying on Copacabana beach and the Iguacu falls we did not manage it! We fly home from Sao Paulo on Monday afternoon and should be back in Glasgow early Tuesday afternoon. Lots to do just now so must go. Thanks again and see you all soon!! Ryan and Ailie... read more

So having admired Igazu from the Brazilian side, we boarded a bus for Rio, a mere 24 hours north. Pretty much as soon as we set foot in Brazil, things began to change. It was like someone had turned up the colour and volume, heightening our senses. Was it the music? Was it the people? Well yes to both. But the thing that took us most by surprise was the food. Brazil´s famous for its beaches, its samba, its football, its bikinis....but no one had told us about the food! In Argentina we had become accustomed to a diet of high quality steak, wine and empanadas (all very pleasing, but lacking variety somewhat), but here in Brazil there is the biggest, brightest, most colourful and sumptuous collection of just about everything you could possibly want. And ... read more

"At the Copa, Copacabana, there´s music and dancing...... this is the wrong song for this location" (and it must be sang in tune). It took us 3 days to get that damm song out of our heads!! Arrived in Rio after a 6 hour, very comfortable bus journey from San Paulo, cost e25 and it was more comfortable than business class and defo no comparison to Ryanair. We were booked into the Stone of a Beach Hostel (and that when it all kicked off), hostel is two blocks from the Copacabana beach. Apparently Ipanema beach is the place where the beautiful people are but we found everything expensive and the beach was overcrowed, nothing worse than a thong (stuck in a fat ass) in the face when trying to sunbathe!! Seriously that was it, nothing to ... read more

Zaten we ergens mooi an,kwam er een jongen ... read more

Hi We decided to go to Rio de Janeiro on the days 30.April - 5.Mai because Hemmi had a long weekend. We took the bus from Joinville on Wednesday evening and arrived in Rio at noon on Thursday. We took the bus straight to Copacabana where we found a cheap hostel near the beach and after checking in, we explored the city. Celebrating the first of may, Rio held a big concert on the beach of Copacabana and there were thousands of people there listening to Brazilian music and dancing. On the beach there were people walking around selling beer, snacks and candy so there was no need to actually leave your spot, they just came to you. Very convenient for tired travelers. We had the best maiscorn we’ve ever tasted. There is a person with ... read more

Thursday 24th After another 530am start join Gaynor on the bus into town. She's going to show me how to make my own way back if I like. Takes the usual 1.5 hours this morning. I get time on the internet again then head over to the hotel to meet Linda. Lila is there but Linda isn't... My fault! Get into an internet café and we arrange that I'll wait there. Meantime is a message from Gaynor that the ferry has had an accident which means that traffic won't be great tonight! Once we meet, go for breakfast at a juice store before I go bikini shopping with Linda. We find her 2 sets, one in the sales (Bargain Bex lives up to her name again)... And those Brazilian women are pretty shameless... Come out of ... read more
