Emma had her day off so we walked down to Taupo and I got myself some sandals before we headed down to the beach and meet her friend Dave and go out sailing on Taupo Lake for a couple of hours. I think we were out for about 3h sunbathing, swimming and chatting about what we have been up to for the past years. While we were on board Emma got a text from Mia asking if I would like to join her and a friend for the Tongariro Crossing the following day. Since I wasn't able to do the hike I had originally planned I thought that sounded awesome and accepted the invitation. So after we got a shore we went up to Taupo to get me some food and better shoes for the walk. ... read more

Time to head to Taupo and Emma! :D I have never flown Domestic before so I'm not sure if this is normal, but the check in was completely self served and I even but on the slip on my luggage and when I boarded I only handed my boarding pass. I never had to show my passport and there were no security check what so ever. That felt very very strange to be on a airport and not having people wanting to now what you have with you. The plane was also a bit different. Really small, just two rows and it couldn't fit more than 20 passenger. There was no top shelves so you had to keep your carry on luggage between your knees. The flight it self then only took about 40min and then ... read more

Sat 26th Jan (Australian Day ....& the 12th anniversary of the day we met!) we left Catherine's house in New Plymouth to head North towards to Lake Taupo. It was supposed to be 280km but I'm not sure we went the most direct route and it ended up taking about 5 hours but we arrived at Lake Taupo mid afternoon, knackered but really impressed with the place. We had a nice lunch overlooking the lake and found a camp site that looked like it was straight out of the 1950's!!! Our first impression driving through the gates was 'carry on camping' but we took one look at the view from our cabin overlooking the lake and we were WOWED! The site was 'rustic' but it had everything including a flushing toilet with a view (the toilet ... read more

On Tuesday morning, we saw our last steaming, bubbling mud pool and left Rotorua (and the rotten egg smell) behind us, apart from the smell which had permeated our clothes, and headed towards Taupo. We had a brief stop at Huka falls, where light blue water runs between two rock faces making incredible 10m rapids on the way down (I'm not sure what grade this would be on the rafting scale, but apparently no-one's ever managed it!) Hazel had signed up to do a skydive that afternoon - Christine had recomended Taupo, as you can see great views across the lake as you come down. Despite my vertigo, I decided to sign up too, as it was on my list of "things to do before you die"...or while you die! The build up is much worse ... read more

Hey guys So we have been pretty useless loading photos and blogging since being in New Zealand but I'll try and summarise what we have done over our time here from where Dan left off. We headed south down the West coast through the Glacier regions of Fox and Franz Josef, Wanaka and finally hit Queenstown. We decided we would go for it and did a sky dive the following day. We could ot have asked for better weather, there was a barely a cloud in the sky and the sun was shining throughout our time on the ground and in the air! It was a glorious day and we both had an awesome time jumping out of the plane at 15,000ft! We met and English couple who were jumping too called Sola and Tom who ... read more

Finally we got back to civilization. And it stopped raining for 2 whole hours! I can use a dryer to warm up all my soaking wet clothes. Yay. We made a shit-ton of pasta and left the next day for the Marae. Day 1 at the Marae was a bit brutal since we had lecture for over 7 hours. We were traditionally greeted by the Maori people just like when I was 15 in the People to People Program. Welcomes consisted of pressing each other’s noses and heads together to symbolize the sharing of breath and thoughts. After lunch we learned a Maori song and witnessed the making of bush medicine. Dinner was delicious. All 31 of us and our professors slept on the floor in sleeping bags in a giant Maori hut. The professor’s sons ... read more

Had qnither great day. Took walk to Haku Falls, it was beautiful walked along the river which is so deep and clear. There is a hot stream which runs into the river which you can swim in. The falls were amazing the deep flowing fast flowing water enters a narrow gorge about a 100mtrs long so is very turbulant. The name means foam in Maori. Tomorrow I am heading south to Palmerston North, the route takes me near to an alpine walk and a desert. New Zealand really has such diverse regions!... read more
