2 blogs for the price of one today - cos took lots of photos! Had breakfast in Taupo this morning before heading off on a trek to the Huka Falls, stopping at Honey Hive (to learn all about the healing properties of (Manuka) honey. The trek was fairly arduous but worth as the river/falls were spectacular. Then we headed for The Craters of the Moon walk, named for its other-worldly atmosphere because it's an area of geothermal activity: complete with bubbling crates, mud pools, steam vents and so. After that it was back for a relax in the hot tub(yes, another one) before heading off for our Maori experience. More to come... read more

Don't know where Ohakune came from - we're in Wairakei! Got up this morning in Whangamata and it was still raining. Nevertheless,we made use of the hot tub on the (covered) balcony - I felt a bit "Essex"! Then we went to St. Joseph's in Waihi - still raining! Had breakfast and walked around the disused open-cast goldmine (in the rain - as you will see from the pics!). Saw some intersting birds. Then we headed for Taupo via Tauringa and Rotorua - didn't notice the sulphur smell! The Wairekai Resort where we are staying is pretty extensive with a 9 hole golf course, gym, squash court, pool, geothermal spa waters - so we had our 2nd "hot tub" experience of the day (or ever, for me!) A few things planned for tomorrow: Huka Falls,Craters of the Moon,Maori experience. To ... read more

Another check on the bucket list. I jumped! I finally completed a sky dive woohoo! The weather wasn't very kind to us, kept us in anticipation as our jump gets postponed a couple of times in a day. Finally we got a confirmation that we can jump at 6pm. After we got there, sat thru some safety briefing, gearing up, and there we go. CJ had not wanted to be the first to jump, but fate had it that her pilot somehow was the last to board and turn out that she had to be the first! Poor thing. We could see her tear, but no turning back as we started to ascend to 12000 ft. As we ascend, I could see houses getting tinier and tinier. After a while, we were submerged in cloud. Can't ... read more

Went white water rafting on the Tongariro river this morning which was brilliant, we rafted 14km and 52 rapids.. and all without falling in the water. Then headed to Taupo to have a look around. The weather has completely changed – now blue sky and sunshine, some clouds in the sky, but feeling a lot warmer. We went out on a sailing boat across Lake Taupo which was good and saw the Maori carvings (see photo). Becoming amused by the NZ tendancy to add the word 'eh' to the end of sentences!! Wow, so much has happened since my last blog a month ago. I know I've been very lax but other people have been making demands on my internet time but here goes. I stayed a total of 10 days in Christchurch during which time I went to the most fab Fireworks display at the beach. The fireworks were all set up on the pier and it was just a like a festival - there were thousands of people there. Apparently it's the main one in Christchurch which is why it gets so busy. It's also free, which helps. I had some great weather in Christchurch and even got to do a bit of sunbathing. I left Christchurch and went on to Oamaru, still on the east coast where I got to see some adorable little blue ... read more

I arrived from Tongariro in Taupo after a really miserable bout of bad weather. Unfortunately, the bad weather seemed to follow us from Tongariro. We decide to put up in Rainbow Lodge instead of the much recommended (and top BBH rated), Blackcurrant Backpackers because it was a tad bit more pricey ($21 versus $24) and we thought it would not make too much a difference. Unfortunately, I felt Rainbow Lodge to be too large and a bit too busy for my liking. There are always people everywhere, lounge, TV room, kitchen, garden, etc. I did not think I ever had a quiet moment there. I think I prefer much smaller and more homey backpackers like Juno Hall and Colville Farm. With so many people, you have to jostle to use sinks, stoves, kitchen utensils and even ... read more

Wednesday 30th Nov I arrive in Auckland airport around 10am feeling pretty damn good after my ten hour sominex induced coma and a fairly decent 'plane food' breakfast. I head to my hostel in Ponsonby which, as it turns out, is one of the nicest areas in Auckland. Good choice me. The hostel is great with lovely staff and free towels!! When you're traveling through hostels, it's the small pleasures that are the most comforting. After freaking out about visible dust thought the viewfinder on my camera, I head into the city to find a camera shop to get it cleaned up. Got there, turned out it was just on the mirror (not the sensor) and so no massive expenditure of money necessary. Em and Phil head up to meet me in Ponsonby. It was so ... read more

My last day in Auckland was spent visiting Waiheke island, doing a little walk before sampling some of the local fine wines. What a lovely way to spend the day. On Thursday I joined the stray bus south from Auckland & went to Hahei & visited Cathedral cove, a beautiful beach before having a BBQ with my fellow stray mates. On Friday we went to Raglan & saw Bridal veil falls & the surf breaking on the beach before heading to Waitomo caves yesterday where I went caving. This involved 3 abseils, the last 2 over waterfalls & crawling through small spaces & a bit of rock climbing. Great fun. We stayed the night in Maketu, where we had a traditional meal & the boys put on a superb performance of the Haka &the girls tried ... read more

On our journey back to Auckland we had a couple of days driving through rainy weather to catch the ferry back across to the North Island. It was all to be worth it though as we were headed back to Taupo where we had arranged to do a sky-dive!! It would be a crime to come to New Zealand, the home of adrenaline junkies, and not do something a bit crazy! On the way to Taupo we were pretty excited about doing a jump, none of us had done one before and this country is the perfect place to launch yourself out of a plane so it was a must. Once we woke up on the morning of our jump though reality kicked in bad! After a fairly sleepless night, Tina woke up with the realization ... read more

Well what a weekend to be in NZ!!! After a full week in Auckland (probably a little long in a city for this country girl but absolutely worth it for the way it ended!) I topped it off with a trip to Eden Park for the bronze final of the rugby (couldn't afford the $900-plus for the actual final!). The match didn't disappoint - aside from the end result - but the atmosphere was amazing, the weather was perfect and I got some good photos to boot! The scariest moment was soon after kick-off when Shane Williams (my favourite!) was nearly split in half by a crushing tackle. The man must be made of steel to have recovered, but recover he did to score Wales' first try! Just a shame, especially after the final 5 minutes ... read more
