Lake Taupo ist eine der Regionen, wo die Neuseelaender selbst zum Urlaub machen hinfahren, nicht zu letzt wegen den beruehmten Forllen in der Region und den Hika Falls, die ganz gut als Ausflugsziel dienen . Viel Zeit hab ich dort zwar nicht verbracht, kann aber verstehen, warum es dort so viele Leute hinzieht. Die Aussicht ueber den See, der uebrigens der groesste Suesswassersee Neuseelands und man fuehlt sich wie am Meer. Lake Taupo ist eigentlich ein Vulkankrater, der wiederrum aus heissen Quellen mit Suesswasser gespeist wird und so gross ist, dass man Tage braucht, um ihnzu Fuss zu umrunden. Der ist 606 km2 gross, so gross, dass er Wellen wirft wie ein Meer. Donnerstag, 18. Oktober 12 Reisetag: Whitinga – Waihi – Tauranga - Rotorua- Taupo Reisewetter = Sauwetter? Nein, nein so schlimm war es nun doch nicht! Natürlich begann es beim Einladen von Koffern, Taschen und unserem Lebensmittelkorb zu regnen. Macht ja nichts, wir sitzen im Trockenen. Rolf programmiert das Reiseziel ins Tomtom und ab geht die Post, wieder über kurvenreiche Küstenstrassen. Willi freuts, ich rede nicht allzuviel, konzentriere mich nach vorne. Ich sitze mitten in der zweiten Reihe und habe die beste Aussicht: nach vorne auf die Strasse, nach links und rechts und trotzdem, lieber fahre ich geradeaus. Willi fotografiert heute Strassenschilder und Trucks, er hat also viel zu tun. I was happy to have a down day after the marathon day I had. Today I was able to wake up late as the first thing I had to do was transfer to the bus station around noon. So after I woke up I walked to the McDonald’s up the street and got a quick breakfast before doing a little shopping. I need to pick up some souvenirs for the loved ones you know. The coolest thing I found was at a store called Mountain Jade, they sell authentic New Zealand jade pieces, NZ jade is pretty expensive due to the fact that they do not mine in, it is found in rivers and hill sides after rains. This past weekend was pretty epic! I went down to Taupo with 14 other students living in the same place that I am. They were all from the Arcadia group and I only knew two people going in. We left Friday and it took us about 4.5 hours to drive to our backpackers hostel. Once we arrived we went to a truck-stop for dinner since nothing else was open. They actually had really good food here! The next morning we woke up at five and loaded the bus which took us to Tongariro National Park. When we got there I realized I should have done more research on the hike because I didn't know what I was getting myself into! That double bed was just amazing – it was a real effort to drag myself out of it this morning as I wanted to stay there all day. Can’t wait to see my bed back home – I’ll probably not get out of it for the three days I have before I start work again. But leave it I had to, as 1) the car’s on the meter and will be clamped by 10am, and 2) I’ve got stuff to see in Napier, and a journey to undertake to Taupo. I wish I could extend out my time here in NZ as I’ve been having such a great few weeks and it feels terrible rushing around the North Island, trying to get things done in time.
