Kayaking around the Taupo lake rock carvings. Kayaked right up to the large 10metre high Maori Rockface carvings. Very impressive. The carvings were created by sculptor Matahi Whakataka-Brightwell in the 70's on the area called Mine Bay. They are only accessible by boat or kayak. The large face represents the great Maori navigator Ngatoroirangi who was meant to have brought tribes to the Taupo region a thousand years ago. There are also some smaller carvings by Matahi and some local sculptor students on the rocks to the left of the main rock face carving. Many sculptures depicting a big lizard and many figures from Maori legends. Amongst then are also a few Celtic patterns showing a mermaid and the face of the southerly wind. Up early to head to Taupo. The Huka falls. Water flows from lake Taupo into the Waikato river, New Zealands longest river. 425km long. And at the Huka Falls 200,000 litres of water rapidly charges towards the Falls and plunges 9 metres over the large rock face every second. A number of people of people have kayaked the falls and survived. A number of people have also tried it and died too. So I'm not considering having a go, that's for sure. Explored around the town of Taupo. Pics: Taupo ... read more

Am ... read more

I arrived in Taupo on Monday morning. This is one stop from my first trip to NZ that I really did not want to miss this time around. Taupo sits on a beautiful lake that is huge! I found out its the size of Signapore...are you kidding me! And Signapore has a larger population than NZ. Nice! Either way, its a town I always wanted to come visit and has a hike that I've been dying to do. When I arrived at 10 am, I quickly found a hostel to check in to. I choose Rainbow Lodge. Its ok as far as hostels go. Thus far its been quite quiet which is pretty much what I'm looking for at this point. I put myself into a 3 bed dorm and only one other girl was in, ... read more

After leaving a very wet East Cape we headed in land to try and escape the rain. We made a quick stop in Whakatane, though not for long as it was still raining. We then cut through the hills towards Taupo. In order to spend a day around the lake we stopped overnight before we got to Lake Taupo at Awakeri Hot Springs. It was quite a small campsite but it had hot spring swimming pools that were partly under cover. So when the rain eased enough we headed over to them. They were absolutely delightful and even when it started raining again it didn’t really matter because the water was so warm the rain actually had a cooling effect!! The only problem with the campsite was that all the hot water was a direct feed ... read more

Taupo is the place where everyone seems to do their skydive as it's the cheapest place and you have great views of lake Taupo. Fortunately for my bank balance I chickened out, the heights thing was just to much for me. Instead I walked around and took in the views, then went to the bar. I was gonig to stay here for a few days to chill, but due to making a few friends, decided to go along with them as they have less time and it's good share the experience with others. We have about a group of 10, but soon people will need to go their seperate ways. I would still reccomend anyone to go there as it's a very beautiful place.... read more

Saturday 5th March – the day of the Ironman. We had put the alarm on for 6am but when we jumped out of bed and looked outside we were met with a thoroughly miserable scene – torrential rain! To our credit we didn’t even consider creeping back under the sheets but instead donned our anoraks, fished out our one umbrella and gamely set off. We wondered how the athletes could possibly cope with such weather. A 3.8 kilometre swim probably wouldn’t daunt them as they would get wet anyway but riding a bike for 180 kms and then running a marathon surely would make a lot of entrants think twice? Well, the event is not called Ironman for nothing but the fact is that women swim, cycle and run exactly the same distance as the men ... read more
