Heading North Showpony and the Donkey met at the airport in Christchurch at a time well before departure. They ended up with separate seats on the plane which the donkey did not mind as he knew that there would be plenty of time with Showpony to come. When they arrived in Auckland they were too mean to take a shuttle or taxi to their hotel so they walked, and walked....and walked. They also discovered the reason why the Donkey got his bike in the box so much quicker. His box was almost twice the size as Showpony's bike box. Showpony un-boxed his bike and was delighted to discover that it had not been damaged. The Donkey, in contrast, was disappointed that his bike also came out of his box unscathed as he was still looking for ... read more

My adventure begins at the chiropractor, as all truly great adventures do. I walked in for a pre-vacation adjustment of my old-man spine. After barely setting foot in the door a man sitting in the waiting room commented “so you’re going on a trip eh?” “Yeah!?” I said enthusiastically but with that upward inflection one uses when they’re confused. “You’re probably pretty confused” the man surmised, brilliantly. “Yes…” I said, panicking that this person was someone important from the office whom I’d met previously but had completely forgotten. “You were at the McKenzie Towne barber shop this Sunday talking about your trip. I was there too, in the chair across from you.” Well well, small world I suppose… watch as this same guy would be beside me on my flight. Speaking of flights, the first leg ... read more

Before heading to New Zealand we motored north three hours away from the 40 degree heat of Sydney to stay with friend Liz Warne in Salamander Bay. Liz hosted us royally and we enjoyed the local sights including the largest moving beach in the Southern Hemisphere called Birubi. We also watched a magnificent storm roll in and out; wind rain, lightening, it had it all. It was easy to sup the odd glass of wine from Liz’s house with views over the bay. After three days we headed back to Sydney airport, leaving at 06.45, strangely the kick off time of the Sheffield derby, back in Blighty. (0-0 a good result under current circumstances). We flew Qantas on a 737 and the 12 of us in business class were well fed and certainly not left short ... read more

Early start in Singapore. Reveile at 04:30 hours ready for sortie to Changi airport departing 05:45 to catch flight to Aukland. Packed up breakfast provided by hotel to take with us in taxi. We seemed to spend all of today at airports or flying. Losing track of dates, time and own identity. We have decided that airports don't need gyms as you spend so much time walking, that they are unnecessary. Had a superb flight with Air New Zealand on one of their "dream liners". Very comfortable with lots of space and the food was very good with no sign of plastic cutlery, dishes or foil containers. We were looked after by two "very nice young men". Arrived Aukland after another 9 hours flight and 5 hours time difference. By the end of this flight, I ... read more

Wir besuchten 4 ... read more

Hey there blog followers and friends It's been a crazy 9 weeks here and, as well as finishing off the academic year and waving goodbye to my current class and moving into my new classroom, me and Katie have ventured whenever possible (some 20,000km since August) New Zealand is just spectacular and the usual Sunday jaunt across Hauraki to either Tauranga or Coromandel is always satisfying. With my folks arriving in 4 days and a 4 week trip to South Island looming, I do have some updates though... First : I purchased a Yamaha Scorpio (225cc) motorcycle from a pal at work and remembered how much I adore motorcycling and in NZ that means GREAT rides, GREAT views and GREAT times. Even better, it was cheap and fitted in the back of Katie. Next : I ... read more

Well i’ll Be a monkeys uncle. We checked our bags in and no fines for excess baggage. Wonders will never cease. Easy stay at the airport. Not too many people and comfortable seats so we did not use the privilege lounge. Movie and meal on the 3 hr trip to Kiw. my only observatio, and I certainly am not being an is, but the air New Zealand cabin crew looked nearer retirement age than me! Can’t complain about the service at all. Because of all our luggage the taxis would not take us to the hotel so we got a white airport transfer bus for NZ$35. We now know that the yellow bus costs $2! We had a beer and a meal. I had fish and mash in a mushroom sauce and Alex had a chicken ... read more

789 days. That's two years, one month and twenty-eight days during which I was on one continuous journey, the longest stop of which was a mere 36 days. My adventure took me 83,161km, through approximately 231 towns, settlements, villages and cities in 53 different countries. It was, without any literal exaggeration, the journey of a lifetime. Back in Bali, the journey had now come down to the last flight. Well, three technically; Air Asia may have been the cheapest way to get back to Auckland but it meant flying away from my final destination for three hours to Kuala Lumpur before catching flights to first the Gold Coast, and then finally to Auckland. I thought maybe that I'd have a lot of emotions and feelings running through me as I boarded my last flight; that as ... read more

On our last morning we were up early again, this time for another boat trip on the Ganges. It is still pretty hectic with many people coming to the river to do puja at sunrise - washing, praying and making offerings. We go up river past the dhobi ghats where the laundry is being done to the second crematory ghat which has the traditional fires as well as an electric crematorium. The buildings at each ghat seems to be have built by someone important from a different state so you can see the influence of all different parts of India and Nepal - and Britain - as we go past. We drift down river as the sun comes up and get out just after the other crematory ghat which is less busy than last night. We ... read more
